Chapter 1

In my previous life, my boyfriend's younger sister came to the CT room for a check-up.

As always, I asked the routine questions about whether she was pregnant or planning to be within the next six months. After all, CT scans involve radiation. It could harm the fetus.

She had confidently said no.

However, when I handed her the consent form to sign, her face suddenly changed. She immediately pulled out her phone and called my boyfriend, claiming I was putting on airs and making things difficult for her.

Soon after, my boyfriend called me.

“Don’t make things difficult with my sister over something so trivial. You’re putting me in the middle. I swear on my life she’s not pregnant!”

Trusting him, I skipped the consent form and went ahead with the scan. However, the results clearly showed she was pregnant, and not just newly.

His family dragged me into court. I lost everything, buried under debt.

In the end, I died from the scorching heat while hauling bricks at a construction site.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the very day his sister came in for her check-up.

"Emily, I’m here for my check-up."

The familiar voice gave me a jolt.

Looking around, a bold thought hit me. Had I been reborn?

Mechanically, I took the paperwork from Mira’s hand.

My eyes scanned the form for the tests listed, the date, and the truth sank in. Yes, I had been given a second chance.

I looked at Mira’s innocent face and felt the urge to tear her apart.

In my last life, I was blinded by the way she treated me and actually believed her family thought of me like one of their own.

That was how I ended up trusting them.

"Mira, you’re here. Why didn’t you give me a heads-up first?

"We’re family, aren’t we? No need to waste money on a check-up. Just take this form back to the clinic and get a refund.

"I’ll do the check-up for you later for free."

The moment I said “free”, Mira’s eyes lit up.

"Perfect! Thanks, Emily!" She snatched the form from my hands and walked out.

I watched her back as she left, then immediately pulled out my phone and called the director to submit my resignation.

This time, I wouldn’t leave any room for accidents.

By the time noon rolled around, I was done with my shift. Mira finally came back to the CT room, drenched in sweat.

"Emily, your hospital is ridiculous. Getting that refund was such a hassle.

“I had to run from one department to another all morning.

"Good thing you’re still here. You can do my check-up now, right?"

I just shrugged off my white coat.

"Let’s do it later. It’s my lunch break, and I’m starving.”

"What? How can you be like this? I ran around for hours because of you!"

The moment I refused, her sweet facade cracked.

"Don’t be mad! How about I take you out for lunch?"

"Fine. But you’d better be ready. I’m going to make you pay!"

"Deal. And call your brother to come. Let’s have a meal together."
