Rejecting My Mate Before He Destroys Us

I funded the education of the pack’s rising star, Jimmy Sullivan, and out of what I thought was gratitude, he became my mate. He threw lavish gatherings for the pack, supported those in need, and quickly became the golden boy in everyone’s eyes. After graduation, he joined my father’s company as a Beta, only to embezzle funds and ruin the pack, leading my father, the Alpha, to take his own life. On my way to report his crimes to the Lycan Council, his new mate ran me over in the street, killing me. When I opened my eyes again, Jimmy was tossing the gold bracelet I had gifted him onto the ground, his voice dripping with disdain. "Why did you engrave our names on it? Do you want everyone to know I’m only with you for your father’s influence and money?" "Don’t try to insult me with your wealth!" he spat, his eyes cold and mocking. I quickly bent to pick up the bracelet, my heart pounding as the memory of my past life flooded back. This time, I wouldn’t be blinded by love. I pulled out my phone and called my father, the Alpha of our pack.

Chapter 3

That evening, I made plans to meet Vanessa at a bistro for dinner. Vanessa, my loyal Gamma and best friend since childhood, had always stood by my side, even during the darkest times when my father’s pack fell into ruin. Though I had distanced myself from her during my infatuation with Jimmy, she never abandoned me. Now, having learned from my past mistakes, I only wanted to surround myself with those who truly cared for me.

As we stepped into the bistro, the scent of roasted meat and fresh herbs filled the air, mingling with the low hum of conversation. The place was packed, and I immediately noticed Jimmy, surrounded by a group of Deltas from rival packs, throwing a birthday celebration for Rosalina. The moment I entered, Rosalina’s voice cut through the room like a sharpened blade.

“Oh, if it isn’t Angelina,” she sneered, her tone dripping with mockery. “What brings you here? Looking to mooch off someone else’s celebration?”

Her words were laced with venom, and I could feel the weight of their stares. Rosalina had always been one to flaunt her status, especially when she had an audience. I let out a quiet, sarcastic laugh internally, keeping my expression composed.

Vanessa, ever protective, frowned beside me, her hand twitching as if ready to lunge. But I subtly tugged at her sleeve, signaling her to hold back. This wasn’t the time for a public confrontation.

“I’m here to meet a friend for dinner,” I replied calmly, my voice steady despite the tension. “So, my presence here is none of your concern.”

I turned to find our seats, but Jimmy’s voice stopped me in my tracks. “Well, since you’re here, why not join us?” he called out, his tone loud enough to draw the attention of everyone in the bistro.

The Deltas around him chimed in, their taunts sharp and cutting:

“The food here isn’t cheap. You might struggle to foot the bill alone. If you’re here to freeload, just admit it instead of pretending. It’s embarrassing.”

“Jimmy’s so generous, inviting you to eat with us. You act like you’re uninterested, but I bet you’re secretly thrilled.”

I watched the scene unfold, my mind racing. Jimmy was desperate to maintain his facade, basking in their admiration, but I could see the flicker of unease in his eyes. He was worried that I might actually be able to cover the expensive tab myself, which would raise questions among his followers.

“Well, since you’re all so inviting, I won’t hesitate,” I said, suddenly smiling as I accepted his offer. I pulled Vanessa to sit down with them, ignoring her confused look. She trusted me, and I needed her to play along.

Jimmy was visibly taken aback by my response. A flicker of discomfort crossed his face, but he quickly masked it and turned to the waiter. “Bring out several bottles of the finest wine and the top dishes,” he ordered, his voice commanding.

Then he turned back to me, his smirk returning. “Angelina, Amy mentioned wanting some coffee earlier. I ordered it for everyone. It’s coming soon; could you go pick it up?”

I agreed without hesitation, though Vanessa shot me a questioning glance. I gave her a slight nod, signaling her to stay calm. This little drama was far from over.

As I stood to leave, one of the Deltas piped up, “Jimmy, what extravagance! This place is expensive, and that coffee isn’t cheap either. Angelina’s lucky to have a mate like you.”

“Exactly,” Rosalina added, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “With Jimmy around, Angelina doesn’t have to worry about anything.”

I forced a polite smile as I walked away, my mind already plotting the next move. Jimmy’s little charade wouldn’t last long, and I was determined to expose him for the fraud he was.

I wore the blue dress. Not because it was the most expensive one I owned, or because it matched the Ironcliff Pack's colors. I wore it because I had picked it out three weeks ago on a Tuesday afternoon, standing alone in a boutique in town, thinking about how Tristan's eyes always went to blue. Six years of small calculations like that. Six years of choosing things for someone else's reaction. The Ironcliff pack house was full by the time I arrived. Every major family in the region had sent someone — Silverpine, Greywood, the Ashford delegation from the coast. A Come of Age Ceremony for an Alpha heir was political theater as much as celebration, and everyone knew their role. Mine was to stand near the front, look like the future Luna, and remind every wolf in the room that the Silverpine-Ironcliff alliance was solid. I was good at my role.

The morning light filtered through the tall windows of the Pack House as I arranged the fresh-cut lilies in a crystal vase. My fingers lingered on the delicate petals—just as Greyson had lingered on my skin last night, his touch passionate but somehow distant. I pushed the thought away. Today was important. "Perfect," I whispered, stepping back to admire my work. The grand hall sparkled with silver and blue decorations—Silverclaw Pack colors—for Greyson's birthday celebration tonight. Everything had to be flawless. I was Gianna Hayes, the Luna of Silverclaw Pack, and my Alpha deserved nothing less than perfection. My wolf, Aria, stirred within me. *He seems distracted lately.* "He's busy," I replied silently.

I woke alone in our bed, the sheets beside me cold and undisturbed. The digital clock on the nightstand read 6:17 AM—Nash's birthday. I'd set my alarm early to prepare his favorite breakfast before he woke. Joseph hadn't come home last night. Sunlight streamed through the curtains as I slipped from beneath the covers, my bare feet touching the plush carpet. The Alpha suite felt hollow without him. I'd grown accustomed to his absence, but today of all days... "He'll be here," I whispered to myself, though my wolf whined in disagreement. She knew better. She always knew.

The alarm on my phone buzzed at 5:47 AM, thirteen minutes before the rest of the Obsidian Shadow Pack would stir. I'd learned early that those thirteen minutes were mine—the only privacy I'd get all day. I sat up in the narrow bed, my fingers automatically reaching for the amber bottle on the nightstand. Three years, and the routine never changed. Two capsules, dry-swallowed, bitter on my tongue. "Vitamins," Beta Morris had called them when he'd pressed the first bottle into my trembling hands. "To keep you healthy for the Alpha's heir." Healthy. Right. I dressed quickly in the plain gray uniform all Omegas wore—shapeless, forgettable. The mirror above the sink showed a girl I barely recognized anymore.
