Chapter 2

I made it three steps back into the banquet hall before Henry caught up.

He didn't grab me. He didn't need to. He walked past me—past me—and stepped up onto the small platform where the cake sat, the stupid crescent moon cake with my name piped in silver icing. He turned to face the room. Two hundred wolves who had just watched me walk out and drink and walk back in were now watching their Alpha climb onto a stage.

My wolf went still inside me. Not silent this time. Still. The way prey goes still.

"Henry," I said.

He didn't look at me.

"By the right granted to me as Alpha of Shadowmere Pack—" His voice carried. Full Alpha tone. The kind that made the omegas near the wall flinch. "—and witnessed before the ranked wolves of this pack and the Moon Goddess who bound us—"

My hand went to my throat. I didn't tell it to. It just went.

"—I, Henry, Alpha of Shadowmere—"

"Henry, stop." My voice cracked. I had not meant for it to crack.

"—reject you, Ariana—"

The mark split.

I felt the skin tear before I felt the pain. A clean line, opening from the curve of my shoulder up to the soft place behind my ear, the way fruit splits when you press too hard with your thumb. Warm blood ran down my collarbone and soaked into the silk of my dress.

"—as my mate and Luna."

The bond went cold. Then it went hollow. Then it was gone.

There is no word for what it feels like when something that has lived in your chest for five years simply stops being there. The closest I can come is this: imagine your own heartbeat, and then imagine it ending, and then imagine you are still standing.

I dropped.

My knees hit the marble first. Then my hip. My hands flew to my belly before any other part of me could decide what to do—both hands, flat and wide, the only shield I had. Blood from my neck pooled under my cheek when my head touched stone. It was warm. Everything else was so cold.

The banquet hall was completely silent. Two hundred wolves and not one breath.

I tried to look up. I could see shoes. A row of polished shoes belonging to ranked warriors who had eaten at my table, whose wounds I had stitched, whose mates I had counseled. Not one shoe moved toward me.

A serving tray clattered somewhere near the kitchen door. An omega had dropped it. No one turned to look.

"Marcus." Henry's voice, from above me. Calm. Like he was ordering wine.

Boots stepped into my line of sight. Marcus. His Beta. My Beta, three minutes ago.

"Remove her," Henry said. "Before she gets up."

Marcus bent down. His hands closed around my upper arm. He did not speak to me. He did not look at my face. He lifted, and my body came up off the floor like something that had already been decided.

My cheek left a dark smear on the marble.

I do not remember the walk through the hall. I remember the doors opening. I remember rain.

***

The border was a long way in the rain. Marcus didn't carry me. He dragged me by the arm, my heels cutting tracks through wet grass, my dress black with mud by the time he stopped. He let go without a word and stepped back over the boundary stone.

He didn't even look at me before he turned and walked back into the trees.

I lay where he dropped me. The rain hit my open neck wound and the cold was something I cannot describe in any language I have. My hands were still on my belly. They had not moved since I fell.

The phantom pain started then.

It was not the wound. The wound was almost mercy compared to this. This was the bond—the absence of the bond—pulling at every nerve like it was trying to find its missing other half and tearing through me looking. It crawled up my spine and into my jaw. It pulled at the soles of my feet. It scraped behind my eyes.

I made a sound I did not know I could make. Something low and animal that came from the center of my chest and would not stop.

And then something inside me—something I had carried my whole life without name—answered.

It was not a voice. It was a pressure. A great slow rising of something that had been folded very small for a very long time and was now, finally, told it could open.

My back arched off the mud. My fingers spasmed against my belly. I felt my ribs move in a way ribs are not supposed to move—not breaking, but widening. My jaw unhinged. My spine lengthened. The pain was so absolute it stopped being pain and became information: this is what you are, this is what you are, this is what you are.

Fur came in a wave down my arms.

My hands were paws before I understood I had hands.

And then I was standing.

I was standing in the rain on four legs, and I was enormous.

I could see Marcus at the edge of the trees. He had turned back at the sound. His face was the color of paper.

He dropped.

Not in steps. Not in stages. He dropped—knees, hands, forehead—straight into the mud. His whole body flattened like something heavier than himself had pressed down on his shoulders. Behind him, three border patrol wolves came running through the trees, and one by one, as they entered the clearing, they hit the ground the same way. Foreheads in the mud. Spines low. Not one of them able to lift their head.

I did not tell them to do that.

I breathed. My ribs—my new ribs, vast and silver-furred—rose and fell once. The rain ran off my back in sheets.

Something inside me, quiet and very old, spoke for the first time.

*There you are,* she said.

I was. I was here. I was standing in my own body for the first time in twenty-six years.

The mark on my neck was still split. The bond was still gone. The blood was still warm under the fur.

But my hands—my paws—were steady.

And somewhere behind me, in the dark beyond the trees, I felt something else move. Something approaching. Something that did not bow.
