Chapter 3

The scent hit me before I saw him.

White oak and winter steel—clean, cold, and carrying an authority that made my newly awakened wolf lift her head despite the blood still dripping from my neck. I turned, all four massive paws planted in the mud, and watched a convoy emerge from the tree line on the far side of the border.

Three black vehicles. Lycan Council insignia on the doors. The kind of convoy that didn't arrive without advance notice unless something had gone very, very wrong.

The lead vehicle stopped twenty feet from where I stood. The door opened. A man stepped out.

Tall. Dark hair pulled back. Eyes the color of slate in winter. He wore formal travel clothes—not ceremonial, but the kind that said he'd been somewhere important and expected to arrive somewhere more important. His gaze swept the clearing, took in the four border patrol wolves still flattened in the mud with their foreheads pressed to the ground, lingered briefly on Marcus's trembling shoulders, and then landed on me.

His entire body went still.

Not the stillness of shock. The stillness of recognition. His nostrils flared. His eyes widened just slightly—and then his wolf rose behind them so fast I saw the exact moment it hit him.

Mate.

The word didn't come from him. It came from the bond that wasn't there yet, the one trying to form in the space where my old bond used to live. It hit me like a second wound—white cedar and moon orchid, my scent answering his, the biological verdict already rendering itself without asking either of us first.

I snarled.

Teeth bared. Ears flat. Every line of my body communicating what my mouth couldn't in this form: Do not touch me. Do not claim me. Do not even think it.

He stopped mid-step. His hand, which had started to rise, dropped back to his side.

Behind him, an older man emerged from the second vehicle—silver-haired, formal robes, the kind of face that had adjudicated a thousand disputes and would not be impressed by drama. He took one look at me, at the blood on my fur, at the four wolves still pressed into the ground, and said quietly, "Prince Dominic."

Prince.

Of course.

The man—Dominic—didn't take his eyes off me. "I know," he said. His voice was low. Controlled. Like he was holding his wolf back with both hands. "I know, Roland."

"She's bleeding," Roland said.

I shifted. The change tore through me faster this time—bones shortening, fur receding, my human form snapping back into place with a violence that left me gasping. I stood in the rain in a shredded dress, one hand pressed to my belly, the other clutching my torn neck. Blood ran between my fingers.

"I need passage to the Lycan Council," I said. My voice came out hoarse but steady. "Now."

Dominic's jaw tightened. His eyes tracked the blood on my neck, the way I was standing—protective, defensive, one wrong word from collapsing or running. He looked like he wanted to step forward. He didn't.

"You have it," he said.

I waited for the condition. The question. The demand to know what happened, who I was, why his wolf was howling.

He just turned to Roland. "Get a healer. And blankets."

"I don't need—"

"You're bleeding in the rain," Dominic said, still not looking at me. "And you're pregnant. You'll take the blankets."

It wasn't a command. It was stated fact. The kind that didn't leave room for argument because it wasn't actually about me—it was about the logistics of keeping a pregnant wolf upright long enough to reach the stronghold.

I hated that it made sense.

Roland returned with a thick wool blanket and a first aid kit. He handed both to me without comment, then stepped back. I wrapped the blanket around my shoulders with shaking hands and pressed gauze to my neck. The bleeding had slowed, but the wound was still open. It would scar. Rejection marks always did.

Dominic finally looked at me again. His wolf was still there, barely leashed, burning behind his eyes. But his voice when he spoke was careful. Deliberate.

"We were scheduled for an alliance summit with Shadowmere," he said. "I'm guessing that's not happening."

I almost laughed. The sound came out wrong—sharp and bitter. "No."

"Then we'll go straight to the stronghold." He gestured to the lead vehicle. "You'll ride with Roland. I'll follow."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. He was giving me distance. Space. Putting his senior adjudicator between us like a buffer because he understood—somehow, without me saying it—that I could not be in an enclosed space with a man whose wolf was calling mine.

I nodded once.

Roland opened the door for me. I climbed in, the blanket clutched tight, and he slid in beside me. The door closed. Through the tinted window, I watched Dominic return to his vehicle. He didn't look back.

The convoy started moving.

Roland was silent for the first ten minutes. Then, in the same studied casual tone he'd used with the blanket, he said, "The Lycan King has been searching for his daughter for forty years."

I turned my head slowly. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because," Roland said, "you smell like white cedar and moon orchid. And the last time anyone smelled that scent in the royal bloodline, it was on the infant daughter stolen during a rogue raid four decades ago."

My hand tightened on the gauze at my neck. The wound pulled. I didn't let go.

"I don't know what I am," I said quietly. "I woke my wolf twenty minutes ago. I've spent twenty-six years believing I was just—"

Useful.

I stopped. Pressed my right hand flat against my sternum. The bond was gone. The hollow space where it used to live was so vast I could feel the edges of it every time I breathed.

Roland handed me a water flask. "Drink," he said. "It's a long drive."

I took it. I didn't drink. I just held it, the cool metal grounding, and watched the trees blur past the window.

Somewhere ahead of us, Dominic's vehicle led the way. Somewhere behind me, Shadowmere was still standing. Henry was still Alpha. The banquet hall still had my blood on the floor.

And somewhere at the end of this road, a king I'd never met was waiting to tell me I was someone I'd never been.

I closed my eyes. My wolf stirred, restless and new.

*There you are,* she said again.

I wasn't sure yet if that was comfort or warning.

The Lycan stronghold rose out of the forest like something carved from the bones of the earth itself. Stone walls older than any pack I'd ever heard of. Towers that disappeared into low clouds. Gates that opened without anyone touching them—just the scent of the Prince's convoy, and the ancient mechanisms answered.

We drove through in silence.

The inner courtyard was empty except for guards who dropped into formal bows as the vehicles stopped. Roland opened my door. I stepped out, the blanket still wrapped around my shoulders, my bare feet finding cold stone.

Dominic emerged from his vehicle. Our eyes met across the courtyard. The incomplete bond pulled, sharp and insistent. I looked away first.

"This way," Roland said.

He led me through corridors I couldn't track—too many turns, too many stairs. My legs were shaking by the time we reached the great hall. The doors were fifteen feet tall. Carved wolves ran up both sides, their eyes inlaid with something that caught the torchlight and gleamed.

Roland pushed them open.

The hall was full.

Not crowded—but full in the way that mattered. Ranked wolves lined both sides. Council members in formal robes. And at the far end, on a dais carved from a single piece of black stone, a man who could only be the Lycan King.

He was standing. Waiting.

I walked forward. Each step echoed. Blood from my neck had soaked through the gauze and was dripping onto the blanket. I could feel every eye on me—on my torn dress, my mud-streaked legs, my visibly pregnant belly.

I stopped at the base of the dais.

The Lycan King stepped down. One step. Two. His face was lined with age and something heavier than age. His eyes were the color of old amber.

He took one breath. His nostrils flared.

And his wolf rose.

I felt it before I saw it—the aura that filled the hall like water rising, ancient and absolute. It didn't press down. It reached. It searched. And when it found the scent rising from my skin, it answered with a sound I will carry for the rest of my life.

A keening. Low and broken. The sound of forty years ending in a single breath.

Every wolf in the hall dropped. Foreheads to stone. Not in submission. In witness.

The Lycan King reached for my face. His hand shook. His voice, when it came, broke on the first syllable.

"Daughter," he said.

And the world I thought I knew ended for the second time that night.
