Chapter 2

Pain tore through my chest like molten silver, each breath a battle against my own body. The world tilted sideways as I clutched at my heart, feeling something vital shredding inside me.

"Savannah!" Marcus's voice sounded distant, underwater.

I tried to respond, but another wave of agony crashed through me. My wolf—my constant companion through years of training and loneliness—had retreated so deeply I could barely feel her presence.

*Mate... rejected...* The thought formed sluggishly in my mind, disconnected from the searing pain.

"She's going into bond sickness," someone whispered. "I've never seen it happen so quickly."

"Bond sickness?" Marcus's voice sharpened with panic. "That's impossible. It only happens when—"

"When the rejection is particularly brutal," Alpha Victor finished, his voice devoid of sympathy. "The girl's wolf is retreating in trauma."

I forced my eyes open, catching Spencer's face in the crowd. No remorse. No regret. Just cold calculation as he watched me crumple to my knees.

"Spencer," I whispered, reaching out one trembling hand.

He stepped back, avoiding my touch.

"Get her to the healers," Alpha Victor ordered, already turning away. "Though I doubt it will help."

The pack members around me shifted uncomfortably, some averting their eyes from my humiliation. I'd been rejected publicly, deemed unworthy by the future Alpha. And now I was dying from it.

"Leave me alone," I gasped, gathering what little strength remained. "Just... leave me alone."

Marcus tried to support me, but I pushed him away. "Don't," I begged. "Please don't watch me die."

I stumbled away from the ceremonial grounds, each step sending fresh waves of pain through my body. My vision blurred, darkness creeping in at the edges. My wolf remained terrifyingly silent.

Behind me, I heard whispers:

"Never thought she'd actually die from it."

"Spencer shouldn't have been so harsh."

"She was too weak anyway."

Their words followed me like shadows as I fled into the night, away from the pack lands, toward the forbidden Northern Territory beyond Seattle. The ancient woods there were said to be haunted, dangerous for any werewolf to enter alone.

Perfect for a dying one.

The forest grew denser as I pushed north, ancient trees blocking out the moonlight. My legs trembled beneath me, but I kept moving. I wouldn't let them find me like this—broken, rejected, pitiful.

"Please," I whispered to my silent wolf. "Don't leave me alone."

No response came. Just the sound of my ragged breathing and the rustle of leaves overhead.

I stumbled upon the ruins as dawn broke through the trees. Stone archways crumbled with age, covered in moss and vines. Ancient lycan ruins, predating even the oldest werewolf packs. A place no one from my pack would ever look for me.

My knees finally gave out near a fallen pillar. I collapsed against the cold stone, feeling my life force draining away with each labored breath.

"Just let me die here," I murmured, closing my eyes. "Alone. In peace."

A strange scent filled the air—ancient, powerful, somehow familiar. Like the forest itself had a scent, wild and untamed.

Footsteps approached, light but deliberate.

"So this is where you ran to," a deep voice murmured. "To die among the bones of your ancestors."

I forced my eyes open, meeting the most piercing silver gaze I'd ever seen. The man kneeling beside me wasn't from any pack I knew. Tall and imposing, with features that seemed carved from marble, he radiated power unlike anything I'd felt before.

"Who..." I whispered.

"Maximilian Blackthorne," he answered, his fingers gently touching my forehead. "And you're my mate, Savannah Miller."

His words should have shocked me, but something deep within recognized the truth of them. My wolf stirred faintly, responding to his presence despite her retreat.

"You're dying," he continued, his voice tight with emotion. "Bond sickness has taken hold."

"Let me die," I begged. "Please."

His jaw tightened, silver eyes flashing with something ancient and dangerous. "I've waited a thousand years to find you. I won't lose you now."

He leaned closer, his scent enveloping me—forest and storm and something wild that called to what remained of my wolf.

"I can save you," he whispered against my ear. "But it will mean revealing what I truly am. What we truly are."

His lips brushed my neck, sending a shiver through my failing body.

"Choose, Savannah. Life with me—with an ancient lycan—or death alone among these ruins."

My pulse weakened beneath his fingers, my breathing shallow and painful.

"Choose quickly," Maximilian urged, desperation edging his voice. "Time runs out for you."
