Chapter 3

I stared at Maximilian, his silver eyes boring into mine with an intensity that made my fading consciousness waver. Time was running out—I could feel my life force draining with each labored breath.

"Choose, Savannah," he urged again, his voice deeper now, resonating with something ancient and powerful.

Death alone, or life with this stranger who claimed to be my mate?

"Life," I whispered, the word barely audible. "Please."

Something shifted in Maximilian's expression—relief, determination, and something darker I couldn't name. "Then I must reveal what I truly am."

He rose to his full height, towering over me. The air around him began to shimmer, charged with energy that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. His eyes—already striking—began to change, silver melting into molten gold that seemed to glow from within.

"My dear," he said, his voice taking on an otherworldly quality, "I am not just any werewolf."

His form blurred, and suddenly the man before me radiated a power so immense it made the air vibrate. This wasn't the aura of an Alpha or even a pack elder—this was something older, primal, terrifying in its intensity.

"I am Primordial," Maximilian announced, the words echoing in the ancient ruins. "The first of our kind."

I should have been afraid, but the bond sickness had stolen my strength to fear. All I felt was wonder as he knelt beside me again, his golden eyes now flecked with silver.

"To save you," he continued, "I must mark you as mine. This will trigger our true bond—something far stronger than what you experienced with Spencer."

He gently brushed my hair away from my neck, exposing my skin. "This will hurt," he warned, "but it's the only way."

I nodded weakly, too exhausted to speak.

His lips brushed my neck first—a gentle caress that sent shivers through my dying body. Then I felt his teeth—sharper than any werewolf's I'd encountered—sink into my flesh.

Pain exploded through me, white-hot and blinding. But something else came with it—power. Ancient, wild, untamable energy flooded through our connection, chasing away the cold emptiness of bond sickness.

I gasped as my body convulsed, back arching off the ground. My wolf—so silent before—suddenly howled within me, no longer retreating but surging forward with renewed strength.

*MATE. TRUE MATE.*

The voice in my head wasn't just my wolf anymore—it was something more, something powerful that resonated with Maximilian's energy.

"That's it," he murmured against my neck, his teeth still embedded in my flesh. "Feel our bond taking hold."

Warmth spread through me, replacing the icy grip of death. But it wasn't a gentle healing—it was violent, transformative. My body thrashed as waves of power coursed through me, muscles contracting and releasing beyond my control.

"Your dormant bloodline," Maximilian explained through gritted teeth, "is awakening."

Bloodline? I'd never been told of any special heritage.

My skin prickled as if thousands of tiny needles pressed against it from within. A strange scent filled my nostrils—my own scent, but different, wilder, with notes of pine and mountain air that hadn't been there before.

My wolf surged forward again, and this time I felt the change begin—not the familiar shift I'd experienced in training, but something deeper, more primal.

When I opened my eyes, the world looked different—sharper, more vivid. And my reflection in a nearby pool of rainwater showed eyes that glowed silver in the dawn light.

"The animals," Maximilian noted, nodding toward the trees. "Watch."

A deer that had been grazing at the edge of the clearing froze, nostrils flaring as it caught my scent. Then it bolted, white tail flashing as it disappeared into the undergrowth. Birds took flight from nearby trees, squawking in alarm.

"They sense what you are now," Maximilian said softly. "What we both are."

Before I could ask what that meant, shouts echoed through the ruins—angry voices calling my name.

"Savannah!"

I recognized Spencer's voice among them, along with others from our pack.

"They've tracked you," Maximilian growled, his golden eyes narrowing.

A moment later, they burst into the clearing—Spencer in the lead, followed by his father Alpha Victor and several warriors.

They froze when they saw Maximilian standing protectively beside me, his arm around my shoulders.

"What is this?" Alpha Victor demanded, his eyes widening as he took in my changed appearance and the mark on my neck. "Who dares mark one of my pack members without permission?"

Maximilian straightened to his full height, power radiating from him in waves that made the pack warriors step back instinctively.

"I dare," he replied, his voice deadly quiet. "And she is no longer yours to claim."

Spencer's face contorted with shock and fury as he stared at the mark on my neck.

"You rejected her," Maximilian continued coldly. "You have no right to her now."

Alpha Victor's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Who are you to challenge the authority of the Pacific Northwest packs?"

"I am Maximilian Blackthorne," he answered, his voice resonating with ancient power. "And I have just claimed what was always meant to be mine."

The tension in the clearing crackled like lightning, threatening to explode into violence at any moment.
