Chapter 1

The scent hit me first—unwashed bodies, stale blood, and the unmistakable musk of rogues. My nostrils flared as I set down the ceremonial dress I'd been admiring for tomorrow's mating ceremony with Franklin. The ivory silk lay across my bed like a promise about to be broken.

"Rosalie!" Beta Marcus burst through my door without knocking, his usually composed face tight with alarm. "There are rogues at the main house. They're demanding to see you—and Franklin."

I straightened, smoothing down my silk blouse. "Rogues? Here?" The Silver Moon Pack hadn't had rogue visitors in years. Our territory was too valuable, too protected.

"A female and a male. They claim..." Marcus hesitated, his jaw tightening. "They claim the female is Franklin's true mate."

The room tilted slightly. I gripped the bedpost, my knuckles whitening against the dark wood. "That's impossible. Franklin and I are—"

"I know," Marcus said firmly. "But they're making quite a scene. Your father is on his way, but he wanted me to warn you."

I nodded, squaring my shoulders. Whatever this was, I wouldn't face it cowering in my room. "Take me to them."

The main house was chaos when we arrived. Pack members gathered in clusters, whispering and pointing toward the central meeting room. The scent of rogues was stronger here—rank and invasive in our pristine territory.

"Where is she?" I demanded, pushing past two young Delta wolves who scrambled aside at my approach.

"Inside, Miss Rosalie," one stammered. "Alpha Jenkins is on his way."

I pushed open the heavy oak doors and froze.

A woman with tangled dark hair stood in the center of our ceremonial meeting room, her clothes dirty and torn. Beside her lurked a man with wild eyes and scars crisscrossing his face—clearly her brother or companion.

"You must be Rosalie," the woman said, her voice surprisingly steady despite her disheveled appearance. "I'm Marie Coleman. Franklin's true mate."

I felt the blood drain from my face. "Franklin and I have been promised to each other since childhood. We mate tomorrow."

Marie's laugh was sharp and bitter. "Promised? That means nothing. The Moon Goddess chose me for him. I'm his fated mate."

Before I could respond, she lunged forward with shocking speed. Her nails—dirty and jagged—raked across my cheek, drawing blood.

"Franklin belongs to me!" she screamed, her eyes wild with possession.

I stumbled backward, tasting copper as blood trickled into my mouth. The room erupted in shouts as pack members moved to intervene.

Then the man—Reese, I presumed—grabbed my arms, his grip bruising. "And you," he growled, his breath hot against my face, "will be mine."

Horror flooded through me. Not only was this rogue claiming my mate, but his brother dared touch me—an Alpha's daughter—with such presumption?

"You're delusional," I spat, twisting in his grip. "Release me immediately."

"What's happening here?" The voice cut through the chaos like a blade.

Franklin stood in the doorway, his tall frame silhouetted against the light. Relief washed over me—finally, someone who would set this right.

"Franklin," I called, my voice breaking. "They attacked me. They're claiming—"

"I know why they're here," he said quietly, stepping into the room.

Marie immediately moved to his side, her hand possessively on his arm. Franklin didn't push her away.

My stomach twisted as understanding dawned. "You know them?"

"Rosalie," Franklin began, his voice uncharacteristically hesitant. "There's something I need to tell you."

The room fell silent. Even the whispers stopped.

"I've found my true mate," he said, his eyes not quite meeting mine. "It's Marie."

The floor seemed to drop from beneath me. "What about our arrangement? Our packs?"

"We can still honor the alliance," Franklin continued, his words tumbling out faster now. "I'm asking you to be my chosen mate. Marie will be my true mate, but you could still be—"

"His Luna," Marie finished, her smile triumphant.

I stared at them both, disbelief giving way to a cold, hard rage that crystallized in my chest.

"You want me to share you?" My voice was barely above a whisper. "To accept less than what we were promised?"

"It's the only way," Franklin said desperately. "For both our packs."

I felt something inside me snap—the bond we'd been cultivating since childhood, the trust I'd placed in him, the future I'd envisioned.

"No," I said simply, my voice gaining strength with each word. "I reject you, Franklin Morrison."

The air between us crackled with the force of my rejection, the beginning of what would become his downfall.
