Rejected Luna's Rise Chapter 1
The Reynolds Pack's golden anniversary celebration was supposed to be my moment of triumph. Eight years of dedication, sacrifice, and silent endurance—all leading to this night when our pack would showcase its strength and unity to neighboring territories. I had spent weeks overseeing every detail, from the elaborate decorations in our grand pack house to the carefully curated menu that would impress even the most discerning Alpha palates.
Yet as I adjusted the silver moon centerpiece on the main banquet table, a nagging unease settled in my chest. Something felt wrong.
"Luna Aurelia, the champagne tower is ready, but we're still waiting on Alpha Graham's approval for the ceremonial toast." Beta Marcus approached with a slight bow, his eyes not quite meeting mine.
"He's still not here?" I kept my voice steady despite the tightening in my stomach. "The guests will be arriving within the hour."
"He sent word that there's urgent pack business," Marcus replied, though something in his expression suggested he knew more than he was saying. "He promised to return before the celebration begins."
I nodded, swallowing my disappointment. This wasn't unusual—Graham had made a habit of avoiding pack functions where he might be expected to acknowledge me publicly as his Luna. But tonight was different. Tonight was our anniversary.
"I'll check with the kitchen again," I said, smoothing down my formal gown—a midnight blue dress that complemented my Luna status without drawing too much attention. I'd chosen it carefully, hoping Graham might actually look at me for once.
As pack members began to arrive in their finest attire, I greeted each with practiced warmth. But something was off. Their smiles didn't reach their eyes, and their greetings felt rehearsed rather than genuine.
"Luna Aurelia," Delta Ryan said with a stiff bow, his gaze darting to something behind me before quickly returning. "You've outdone yourself with the arrangements."
"Thank you," I replied, studying his face. "Is everything alright?"
A flash of pity crossed his features before he masked it. "Of course. Just... excited for the celebration."
Before I could press further, a commotion at the entrance drew everyone's attention.
The grand doors swung open, and there she stood—Carly Stone, draped in a crimson gown that cost more than most pack members made in a month. Her golden hair cascaded in perfect waves down her back, and her smile was radiant as she stepped into our territory's most important event.
But it wasn't her presence that made my blood run cold.
A small boy, no more than five years old, stood beside her—dressed in a miniature version of an Alpha ceremonial suit, complete with the Reynolds pack emblem embroidered in silver thread on his lapel.
"Look who's here!" Carly announced, her voice carrying across the suddenly silent room. "We wouldn't miss the Reynolds Pack's golden anniversary!"
The child stepped forward confidently, his eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on Graham's empty chair at the head table.
"Where's Papa?" he asked innocently, his voice echoing in the stunned silence.
Carly placed a hand on his shoulder, her smile never faltering. "He'll be here soon, sweetheart. We're here to support the pack's future heir."
Future heir.
The words hit me like a physical blow. I gripped the edge of the nearby table to steady myself as whispers erupted throughout the room.
"That's Graham's son?"
"But what about Luna Aurelia?"
"The Alpha's been keeping this quiet..."
I forced myself to stand straighter, my Luna training kicking in despite the chaos erupting inside me. "Welcome to our celebration," I managed, though my voice sounded hollow even to my own ears.
Carly's eyes met mine, a challenge in their depths. "Thank you for your hospitality, Luna Aurelia. Though I'm surprised you didn't mention the heir would be joining us tonight."
Before I could respond, the crowd parted as Luna Mother Reynolds approached—our former Luna, Graham's mother, and the woman who had never quite accepted me as her son's mate.
The ceremonial box in her hands made my heart stop.
The ancestral Luna necklace—passed down through generations of Reynolds Lunas, a symbol of authority and legitimacy that should have been mine to wear tonight.
"Luna Mother," I began, stepping forward instinctively.
But she walked past me as if I were invisible, her eyes fixed on Carly and the child beside her.
"It's time," she announced, her voice carrying the weight of tradition and ceremony.
My legs felt rooted to the floor as she stopped before Carly, opening the ornate box to reveal the silver crescent moon pendant encrusted with moonstones—the necklace that should have been placed around my neck eight years ago.
"This momentous occasion calls for a special recognition," Luna Mother declared, lifting the necklace with trembling hands. "To honor the mother of the Reynolds heir and the future of our pack."
The room spun around me as she placed the sacred necklace not around my neck, but Carly's.
Eight years of devotion. Eight years of sacrifice. Crumbling in a single, devastating moment before the entire pack.
