The Blackwood Pack House loomed before me, its stone facade imposing against the autumn sky. I adjusted my modest gray cardigan, feeling the weight of my mission press against my chest. As the hidden daughter of the Lycan King, I had spent my life preparing for this moment—the day I would evaluate my arranged mate from within his own territory. My inner wolf, Aura, stirred restlessly. *Careful, Victoria. Remember why we're here.* *I know, Aura. We need to see his true character, not the mask he wears for royalty.* I took a deep breath and approached the entrance, where a young Delta wolf greeted me with a curious glance. "You must be Victoria," she said, her eyes scanning my simple attire. "The new kitchen assistant?" I nodded, keeping my gaze appropriately lowered as befitting the omega status I was pretending to hold. "Yes.

Remember why we're here.*

*I know, Aura. We need to see his true character, not the mask he wears for royalty.*

I took a deep breath and approached the entrance, where a young Delta wolf greeted me with a curious glance.

"You must be Victoria," she said, her eyes scanning my simple attire. "The new kitchen assistant?"

I nodded, keeping my gaze appropriately lowered as befitting the omega status I was pretending to hold. "Yes. I'm here to report for duty."

She led me through corridors that buzzed with whispers. I caught fragments of conversation—"Alpha's mate"... "doesn't look like much"... "why an omega?"—and felt their stares like pinpricks against my skin. The weight of my silver-white wolf hidden beneath my human form seemed suddenly heavier; one shift would reveal my royal bloodline instantly.

The kitchen was warm and fragrant with herbs when we arrived. The head cook, a plump woman with kind eyes, showed me where to store my few belongings in the staff quarters. As I unpacked my single bag, I smoothed down my clothes—a nervous habit I'd developed during my modest upbringing in Connecticut, far from the royal palace.

"The Alpha wants to see you," announced a stern-faced Beta female from the doorway, interrupting my thoughts. Her eyes, cold and calculating, swept over me with undisguised contempt.

Samantha Rivers. I recognized her from the pack files my father had shown me. The ambitious Beta female who had served at Nathan's side since childhood. I noted how she touched her hair when she mentioned him—a gesture of possession.

"Of course," I replied quietly, following her through the winding corridors.

The grand hall of the Blackwood Pack was transformed for the occasion. Crystal chandeliers cast prismatic light across tables laden with roasted meats, exotic fruits, and flowing champagne. Banners bearing the Blackwood crest shimmered in silver and blue, and the air was thick with the scent of wealth and power.

Alpha Nathan Blackwood stood at the center of it all, commanding the space with his broad shoulders and imperious stance. When our eyes met, I felt the pull of the mate bond—a cosmic tug that neither of us could deny. But I also saw something that made my heart sink: pride without humility, power without wisdom.

"My pack," he announced, his Alpha tone reverberating through the hall, silencing all conversation. "Today we welcome my destined mate, Victoria."

He gestured toward me with a flourish that felt rehearsed, performative. I watched his hands as he spoke—tense, controlled movements that betrayed his inner state more than his words ever could.

"As a symbol of our union and the prosperity of our pack, I grant Victoria full access to our resources." His voice boomed across the hall. "Take what you need, my mate. The wealth of the Blackwood Pack is at your disposal."

Murmurs of approval rippled through the crowd. I noticed Samantha's jaw clench, her eyes narrowing as she stood slightly behind Nathan, close enough to touch him if she wished.

"Thank you, Alpha," I replied softly, bowing my head in feigned submission. "Your generosity honors me."

Over the next week, I maintained my cover carefully. I prepared simple meals in the kitchen, spoke only when spoken to, and used the pack resources sparingly—just $32 for communal ingredients that I transformed into meals for the younger pack members.

But on the eighth day, while reviewing the pack's financial records as part of my assessment, I discovered a discrepancy that made my blood run cold. A private ledger, carelessly left open in the pack office, showed a $50,000 shortage—funds missing from accounts that only high-ranking pack members could access.

As I stared at the numbers, a shadow fell across the page. I looked up to find Samantha watching me, a smile playing at the corners of her lips.

"Finding everything you need?" she asked, her voice honeyed but her eyes sharp as flint.

I closed the ledger carefully. "Just familiarizing myself with pack operations."

"Of course you are." She leaned closer, her perfume cloying and expensive. "Everyone wants to know how things work around here. Especially those who... weren't born to this life."

As she walked away, her new designer shoes clicking against the marble floor, I felt a chill of premonition. The missing money, Samantha's new possessions, the calculating look in her eyes—they formed a pattern I couldn't ignore.

I smoothed down my cardigan and steeled myself. The true test of my arranged mate was coming, and I feared he would fail spectacularly.

The greenhouse was my sanctuary in a pack house that had never felt like home. Dawn hadn't yet broken when I slipped inside, the familiar scent of damp soil and blooming flowers wrapping around me like an embrace I'd long been denied elsewhere. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the watering can—a weakness I couldn't afford to show outside these glass walls. I focused on the white lilies, my favorites. Their pure petals reminded me of what I once was—hopeful, untainted. Before the mate bond that became my prison. "You're wilting too, aren't you?" I whispered to a drooping bloom, gently supporting its stem. My wolf, Luna, whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Once silver and strong, she now barely stirred, weakened by the sickness that had been consuming us both since I gave too much blood to save William three years ago. A sudden tremor ran through my bones, stronger than the usual morning weakness.

I tapped my pencil against the edge of my sketchpad, staring at the half-finished design for the ceremonial necklace I planned to surprise Marcus with for our fifth anniversary. The silver and moonstone piece would symbolize our enduring bond—five perfect years as Alpha and Luna of the Silverstone Pack. "What do you think, Lyra?" I whispered to my wolf, who purred contentedly in my mind. *Beautiful, like all your creations, Victoria.* My inner wolf had always been my greatest supporter, even before Marcus. I smiled, setting down my pencil and stretching my arms above my head. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our shared study, casting a warm glow over the polished oak desk. Marcus had left his tablet behind this morning in his rush to handle what he'd called an "urgent pack matter." I reached for it, thinking I could review some of the anniversary celebration plans we'd been discussing. We'd granted each other access to our devices years ago—a symbol of trust between mates. The screen lit up at my touch, revealing a messaging app I rarely used. A notification blinked insistently in the corner—from Amber Rodriguez, our new pack coordinator.

The day before the wedding, the extravagant custom-made Victorian-style dress my husband ordered finally arrived. I gently touched my slightly rounded belly and asked him for a divorce. Colton's secretary called, her voice trembling as she explained, "Mrs. Carpenter, this is all my fault. I misunderstood your preferences. Please, don't blame Mr. Thompson." After gathering my belongings, I was ready to leave, dragging my suitcase behind me, when I ran into Colton just coming home. He saw the suitcase in my hand and furrowed his brow, his voice cold and detached. "Mina, you're still upset?
