Chapter 2

I stopped at the bottom of the staircase. Not because I'd changed my mind. Not because I had anything left to say.

Because I saw it.

The moonstone pendant around Charlie's neck caught the hallway light as Cali shifted him higher on her hip. The stone itself was nothing special — pack healers handed them out to teething pups all the time. But tucked inside the silver clasp, barely visible unless you knew to look, was a single strand of fur. Silver-tipped. Thick. Scent-marked.

Chandler's.

My wolf, silent since the slap, stirred once. Not in grief. In recognition.

I didn't think. I turned back, walked straight past Chandler — who was still standing frozen in the center of the hall like he couldn't process what I'd just said — and climbed the stairs. Mrs. Fox materialized at the top, blocking my path, her face a mask of controlled alarm.

"Luna, you need to leave. Now. Before this becomes uglier than it already is."

"I need to see the boy."

"Absolutely not—"

"One minute." My voice was flat. Empty. I didn't have the energy left to argue. "Then I'm gone."

She hesitated. Calculated. Then stepped aside, because whatever she saw in my face told her I wasn't asking permission anymore.

Cali was in the corner of the upstairs sitting room, rocking Charlie, whispering something into his hair. She looked up when I entered, her eyes red-rimmed, her breath still hitching from the performance on the balcony.

"Please don't take him from me," she whispered. "He's all I have."

I didn't answer. I crouched down in front of them, slow, non-threatening, the way you approach a wounded animal. Charlie blinked at me, sleepy and confused, his small fingers wrapped around the pendant.

"That's pretty," I said softly, nodding toward the stone.

He looked down at it, then back at me, and smiled. Gap-toothed. Innocent.

"Daddy gave it," he said.

Cali went rigid.

I reached out — gently, so gently — and brushed my thumb along the edge of the clasp. The strand of fur shifted. I could smell it from here. Cedarwood and cold nights. Chandler's scent, undeniable.

"Can I see it? Just for a second?"

Charlie, trusting in the way only toddlers are, leaned forward. I unhooked the clasp with one hand, slid the strand free with the other, and tucked it into the pocket of my jacket in one smooth motion. Then I closed the clasp again and let the pendant fall back against his chest.

"There. All better."

Cali's face had gone white. She knew. She knew exactly what I'd just done.

I stood, turned, and walked out without another word. Mrs. Fox was waiting in the hallway, her mouth already open to say something cutting, but I brushed past her like she wasn't there. Beta Fox stood at the base of the stairs, looking between me and Chandler like he was trying to decide which fire to put out first.

I didn't give him the chance. I walked straight through the front door and into the night.

The cold air hit my burning cheek like a slap of its own. I didn't cry. I got in my car, pulled the strand of fur from my pocket, and slid it carefully into a small plastic evidence bag I kept in my glove compartment. My father's voice in my head: *Document everything. Trust nothing you can't prove.*

I started the engine and drove.

Maren Ashby lived twenty minutes outside Dawnridge territory in a small stone cottage that smelled like dried herbs and old wood. I'd known her my entire life. She'd delivered me. Taught me how to stitch a wound when I was twelve. Never once asked a question she didn't need the answer to.

When she opened the door at two in the morning and saw my face — the bruise already blooming dark across my cheekbone, the evidence bag in my hand — she didn't ask what happened. She just stepped aside.

"Come in."

I sat at her kitchen table while she made tea I didn't drink. She set a cold compress on the table in front of me. I pressed it to my cheek and felt nothing.

"I need a blood-lineage test," I said. "Expedited. Before dawn if you can manage it."

Maren took the evidence bag, held it up to the light, examined the strand of fur with the calm efficiency of someone who'd spent forty years reading wolf biology like a second language.

"Whose?"

"Alpha Chandler Fox. And a three-year-old boy named Charlie."

She looked at me then. Really looked. At the bruise. At the way I was holding myself together with nothing but spite and adrenaline.

"You're calling off the ceremony."

"I already did."

She nodded once, set the bag down on her workbench, and pulled on a pair of thin gloves.

"I'll have preliminary results in six hours. Full certification by tonight."

"Thank you."

"Luna." She paused, her back still to me. "Whatever you're planning — and I know you're planning something — make sure it's airtight. The Silverfang Pack doesn't lose gracefully."

"I know."

I left the cottage and sat in my car for a long time, staring at my phone. Then I called my father.

He picked up on the first ring. Alpha instinct. He always knew.

"Luna?"

I told him everything. The screenshots. The mind-link. The balcony. The slap. The fur. I didn't cry. I didn't break. I just recited it like a mission report, the way he'd taught me.

When I finished, there was silence. Four seconds. I counted.

Then his voice came back, low and absolutely lethal.

"The Dawnridge Pack stands behind you. Without condition. Come home."

"Dad—"

My mother's voice cut in, trembling with a fury I'd only heard twice in my life.

"Come home, baby. Right now."

I drove home. The sky was starting to lighten at the edges, gray and cold. I walked through the front door of the pack house and my mother was waiting in the entry hall. She took one look at my face and pulled me into her arms so hard I finally, finally felt something crack.

But I didn't cry. Not yet.

I went upstairs to my childhood room, sat down at my desk, and opened my laptop. The wedding dress still hung on the closet door. I didn't take it down. I just pulled my hair back, rebraided it tight, and started typing.

I had work to do.
