Chapter 3

I posted the statement at dawn.

No screenshots. No accusations. Just seven words that would set three territories on fire: *The Mate Ceremony with Alpha Chandler Fox is void.*

I hit send and closed my laptop. My mother stood in the doorway with coffee I wouldn't drink. My father was already on the phone in his study, his voice low and steady, fielding calls from Alphas who wanted to know what the hell was happening. The wedding dress still hung on my closet door. I should have taken it down. I didn't.

My phone started vibrating. Text after text. Some from friends. Some from pack members I barely knew. A few from allied Lunas asking if I was all right, if I needed anything, their concern genuine but careful. They didn't know what to believe yet.

Mrs. Fox was already working. I could feel it. She'd be making calls right now, her voice dripping sympathy, painting me as the unstable one. *Pre-ceremony nerves,* she'd say. *The poor girl's under so much pressure. You know how it is.* Some would believe her. The ones who valued reputation over truth. The ones who'd rather smooth things over than ask hard questions.

I didn't care. Let them talk. By tonight, they'd know.

Maren called at noon. Her voice was brisk, professional, the way it always got when she was delivering results that mattered.

"Preliminary results are in. Ninety-nine point nine percent match. I'll have the full certification and witness signature by six."

"Thank you."

"Luna." She paused. "Be careful."

I hung up and stared at the ceiling. Ninety-nine point nine percent. Not that I'd needed confirmation. I'd known the moment I saw that pendant. But knowing and proving are two different things.

The knock came an hour later.

I heard his voice downstairs before I saw him. Low, familiar, the kind of voice that didn't need to be raised to fill a room. My father answered the door, and there was a pause — the kind of pause that happens when two Alphas meet and one of them is Lycan royalty.

"Prince Lachlan," my father said. Respectful. Cautious.

"Alpha Carter. I need to speak with Luna."

I came downstairs before my father could answer. Lachlan stood in the entry hall, still in his travel coat, a leather briefcase in one hand. He looked like he hadn't slept. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, his jaw tight. When his eyes found mine, something in his expression cracked just slightly before he pulled it back together.

He saw the bruise on my cheek. I watched his hands curl into fists at his sides, watched him force them open again.

"Luna."

"Lachlan." I kept my voice steady. "You didn't have to come all this way."

"Yes," he said quietly. "I did."

My father gestured toward his study. "Let's talk in private."

We sat around the heavy oak table my father used for pack business. Lachlan set the briefcase down and opened it without ceremony. Files spilled out. Medical records with the Silverfang healer's seal. Purchase logs with dates and timestamps. Testimony statements, signed and sworn. Digital forensics reports on Cali's hidden account, tracking every geo-tagged post back to the Silverfang pack house.

I stared at the pile. "How long have you been building this?"

"Two years." He didn't look at me. "Maybe longer. I started noticing things that didn't add up. Chandler's unexplained absences. Sealed medical files that shouldn't have been sealed. An Omega with no formal pack registration living in the Alpha's private wing." He finally met my eyes. "I didn't know about the boy. Not until last night when you posted. But I knew something was wrong."

My father leaned forward, scanning the top file. His expression darkened with every line he read.

"This is wolfsbane distribution," he said slowly. "Traced back to Mrs. Fox."

"And three healer testimonies confirming the dosage and timing," Lachlan said. "Diluted enough not to kill. Strong enough to suppress mate-scent recognition for years."

The room went silent.

I looked at Lachlan. Really looked at him. At the exhaustion in his eyes, the tension in his shoulders, the way he was holding himself together like he'd been doing it for a very long time.

"Why?" My voice came out quieter than I meant it to. "Why did you do all this?"

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he stood, walked around the table, and crouched in front of my chair so we were eye-level. My father stayed silent, watching.

"Because," Lachlan said, his voice low and steady, "my wolf recognized you the day we both awakened. Wild jasmine and rain. I knew you were my fated mate before I even understood what that meant."

I stopped breathing.

"I didn't tell you," he continued, "because you didn't recognize me back. And I wouldn't force a bond. Not ever. So I stayed. I stayed your friend. I watched you choose him. I watched you plan a life that didn't include me. And I told myself that was enough. That being near you was enough."

His jaw tightened.

"But I also watched him. And the more I watched, the more I knew something was wrong. So I started digging. Not to sabotage you. Not to break you apart. But because if you were ever going to walk away, I wanted you to have every piece of truth you needed to do it without doubt."

I couldn't speak. My wolf, silent and shattered since Chandler struck me, stirred. Not in grief this time. In recognition.

I leaned forward, just slightly, and breathed in.

Cedarwood. Thunderstorm. The scent of home I'd been ignoring my entire life.

My wolf howled.

Lachlan's eyes widened. He'd heard it. Felt it.

"Luna," he whispered.

"I need you to stand with me," I said. My voice shook, but I didn't stop. "Tomorrow. At the ceremony venue. I need you beside me when I burn his world down."

He didn't hesitate. "Yes."

My father cleared his throat. When I looked at him, his expression was carefully neutral, but I saw the approval in his eyes.

"Then we have work to do," he said.

Lachlan stood, offered me his hand, and pulled me to my feet. His hand was warm. Steady. I didn't let go right away.

For the first time in five years, I let myself feel it. The bond. The rightness. The thing I'd been running from because I thought duty mattered more than truth.

I'd been so wrong.
