Chapter 1

The dress hung on my closet door like a ghost, all white lace and tomorrow. I couldn't sleep. Tomorrow I would stand before every Alpha and Luna in three territories and become Silverfang's Luna. Tonight I just lay in my childhood bed at the Dawnridge pack house, scrolling my phone, waiting for my wolf to stop pacing.

She'd been restless for weeks. I told myself it was pre-ceremony nerves.

A suggested account popped up under my thumb — blurred profile picture, no name I recognized, thirty-something followers. I don't know why I tapped it. Instinct, maybe. The kind I'd spent five years learning to ignore.

The first photo was a close-up of silver-tipped fur against dark bedsheets. I knew that fur. I'd run my fingers through it a hundred times in wolf form, Chandler's coat catching moonlight like frost. The geotag underneath read *Silverfang Pack House — Private Quarters.*

My stomach dropped before my brain caught up.

I kept scrolling. A toddler, maybe three, dark-eyed, gap-toothed grin, a moonstone pendant looped around his small neck. Another photo, the same boy asleep against a woman's shoulder — Cali. Chandler's foster sister. The caption said *my whole world.*

My wolf went silent. Not growling, not whimpering. Silent, the way a room goes silent right before something breaks.

I didn't cry. I didn't call anyone. I did what my father taught me — I opened my private folder, the one I'd kept since I was fourteen, and I started documenting. Screenshot. Timestamp. Geotag. Screenshot. My hands were steady. That should have scared me more than it did.

When I had eleven images saved, I opened the Silverfang family mind-link.

*I need to speak with Chandler. Now.*

Beta Fox answered first, his mental voice clipped as a memo. *Luna, it's the night before the ceremony. Bonding tradition keeps the pair apart until the ritual. You know this.*

*I have evidence your son has a hidden son. Three years old. I can see the pack house geotags myself.*

A pause. Then, *Let's not be hasty. Screenshots can be manipulated. Think of what an accusation like this does to the pack's standing the night before an alliance ceremony.*

Mrs. Fox's voice slid in next, silk over steel. *Luna, dear. A Luna's composure is her greatest asset. Whatever you think you've found, you'll want to sit with it privately before you say something you can't unsay.*

Nobody mentioned the child's face. Not once. Eleven screenshots and not one person in that chat acknowledged there was a little boy wearing a pendant I'd never seen.

That's when I understood. This wasn't confusion. This was coordination.

I grabbed my keys.

The drive to the Silverfang pack house took forty minutes I don't remember driving. I walked through the front doors and Cali was already standing in the main hall, waiting, like she'd known I was coming before I did. Her eyes were wide, glassy, her hands twisting the hem of her sleep shirt.

"Luna," she breathed. "It's not what you think."

"Where's Chandler?" I didn't slow down.

She moved — fast, for someone playing fragile — snatching a small warm bundle off the couch. Charlie. The boy from the photos, blinking awake against her collarbone. She backed toward the staircase, then the second-floor balcony, until she stood at the railing with him clutched to her chest.

"Don't come closer!" Her voice cracked, high and theatrical. "I'll jump. I swear I'll jump with him, I have nothing left, you have everything, you have him—"

"Cali." Chandler's voice, behind me. Sharp. Alarmed. For her. Not for me.

He stepped between us, gold-eyed, jaw tight, his Alpha aura flaring hot enough to press against my skin like a physical wall.

"Back down, Luna."

"Is he yours?" My voice came out eerily quiet. "Look at me and tell me that boy isn't yours."

"You're scaring her—"

"Chandler."

The crack of his hand across my face happened before I even saw his arm move.

The sound filled the whole hall. My ears rang. My cheek burned white-hot, then numb. Somewhere above us Cali had gone silent, watching.

I didn't fall. I didn't cry out. Something inside me — the thing I'd spent five years forcing into the shape of a bond — simply stopped. Cleanly. Like a string cut.

I turned my face back to him, calm now, calmer than I had any right to be.

"The Mate Ceremony," I said, "is canceled."

No one in that hall moved. Not Chandler. Not Cali, frozen on the balcony with a child in her arms. Not the shadows of Beta and Mrs. Fox I could feel gathering at the top of the stairs.

I turned and walked toward the door, my cheek still burning, my hands perfectly steady.
