Chapter 4

The guards changed shifts at dusk. I waited until their voices faded down the path, until the wolfsbane air had settled into its heavy nighttime stillness, and then I closed my eyes and reached for the thing I had been afraid to touch since the altar.

The bond.

It wasn't gone. That was the secret Brayden didn't know—or didn't care to know. The formal rejection had been one-sided. He had spoken his vow. I had never spoken mine. Somewhere in the hollow space in my chest, buried under the cold and the ache, a single fiber still existed. Frayed. Barely alive. But there.

I pressed my palm flat against the dirt floor and pulled everything I had into my chest.

My wolf stirred. Faint. Confused. I didn't ask her to fight. I asked her for one thing—the scent she had never been allowed to release. The one Carla had spent sixteen years burying under wolfsbane. The one I had smelled on myself only once, as a child, before it disappeared under bitterness and layered suppression. Wildflower. Frost. Something older underneath.

Royal blood.

I didn't know if it would work. I didn't know if there was enough of me left. I gathered what remained of the mate bond's mind-link—that single fraying thread—and I compressed everything into it. The scent. The location. A pulse of pure, unmasked identity.

Then I pushed.

It tore out of me. I felt it leave my chest like something ripping loose, and I doubled over, my forehead striking the dirt. The tremor in my hands became a full-body shake. My vision went white at the edges. Somewhere very far away I heard myself make a sound—not a scream, something smaller and more broken—and then the world tilted and I was against the wall, my cheek pressed to the wood, my breath coming in shallow rattles.

I didn't know if it had gone far enough.

I didn't know if anyone would hear.

I lay there in the dark and let myself believe, for one second, that someone might.

---

Miles away—I would learn this later, though I imagined it a hundred times in the days that followed—Westley Ashford stood in a briefing tent at the Lycan delegation's forward camp, mid-sentence, reviewing patrol assignments with two of his lieutenants. He went rigid. His hand, resting on the map table, closed into a fist slowly enough that his lieutenants noticed and stopped speaking.

He did not explain. He said only, "Close the briefing."

They closed it.

He walked out of the tent and stood in the cold air and breathed in, once, deeply, as though confirming something he already knew. Wildflower. Frost. The unmistakable resonance of a bloodline he had cataloged in a sealed vial in his private quarters for years.

He knew who had sent it. He knew what it meant.

He began to move.

---

Mira Voss came back on the seventeenth day.

She didn't perform another examination. She stepped inside, closed the door behind her, and stood looking at me for a long moment before she spoke. Her face had aged since I'd seen her last. Not in days—in something deeper. The kind of aging that happens when a person realizes they have been wrong about something important for a very long time.

"I cross-referenced the markers," she said quietly.

I nodded. I didn't have the strength for more.

"Violette." Her voice cracked on my name. She pressed her lips together, steadied herself, and continued. "I have been your healer for twelve years. I trained you. I ate at your mother's table. I never—" She stopped. Swallowed. "The dosage patterns. The masking agents. This has been happening since you were a child."

"I know."

"I didn't."

"I know."

She knelt beside me. Her hands were trembling. Healers' hands were not supposed to tremble.

"I've sent the documentation," she whispered. "Through the inter-pack medical channel. To someone I trust. Someone who has contacts outside Shadowmere." She didn't say Westley's name. She didn't have to. "It's out. It's already out."

I closed my eyes. Something warm and painful moved through my chest.

"Thank you," I said.

She pressed her hand to my shoulder—brief, careful—and stood. "I'm sorry," she said. "I'm so sorry, Violette."

Then she was gone.

---

That night, Brayden came back.

I heard him before I saw him—his voice low and clipped outside the den, questioning a guard. "She's been asking questions? About what?"

"The Challenge Rite, Alpha. Schedule. Delegation arrival. Nothing specific, just—"

"No one talks about the Rite within a mile of this den. Understood?"

"Yes, Alpha."

His boots moved away, then stopped. I heard Sydney's voice next, pitched low but not low enough.

"Just exile her, Brayden. Declare her rogue. Be done with it."

"I can't. A formal exile needs witnesses. Documentation. The Lycan delegation is here in three days—do you understand what kind of scrutiny that would draw?"

"Then do something. She's a problem."

"She's managed."

"You're wrong."

Their voices faded. Neither of them had looked at the rotted corner of the wall. Neither of them had noticed that the wood there was soft enough now, after seventeen nights of scraping, that I could press my thumb into it and feel it give.

I pressed my palm flat against the dirt floor.

Three days.

I made myself breathe.
