Rejected by My Alpha for His Fake Luna Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 10:14 p.m. under the full moon.

I knew the time because I'd checked my watch three times in the last hour, waiting for Brayden to arrive at the altar. The moonfire torches cast their silver light across hundreds of assembled wolves, all of them watching me stand alone on the sacred stone platform. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against the rough altar surface, feeling the cold bite into my palms. Something solid. Something real.

Then Brayden's pine-and-rain scent hit me, and my heart kicked so hard I thought everyone could hear it.

He climbed the altar steps. Took my hands in his. His grip was warm and firm and I wanted to believe it meant something. The pack elder began the ceremonial words. I barely heard them. All I could focus on was Brayden's face, the way the moonlight caught in his dark hair, the faint pull of the mate bond in my chest—fragile, half-formed, but there. It had always been there.

"I, Brayden Hamilton, Alpha of Shadowmere," he said clearly, his voice carrying across the silent clearing, "reject you, Violette Reynolds, as my mate."

The words landed like silver through bone.

The bond didn't snap. It tore. I felt it rip through my chest, a sensation like flesh peeling away from the inside, and the half-formed mark at the base of my throat went cold. Then hollow. Then nothing. My knees hit the altar stone hard enough to crack something—maybe the stone, maybe me. A scream tore out of my throat before I could stop it, raw and animal and wrong.

Brayden had already turned away.

He stepped toward Sydney, who stood at the edge of the altar in a white ceremonial dress that fit her perfectly. She tilted her head, exposing her neck. Brayden sank his mark into her skin without hesitation. The pack erupted into howls of approval. Sydney's face glowed. Brayden lifted her hand and turned to present her to the assembled wolves.

"Your Luna," he announced.

I was still on my knees. Still holding my chest where the bond used to be. The hollow ache spread like poison, and somewhere deep inside, my wolf—already so faint I'd spent years wondering if she even existed—flickered. Then went quieter than she'd ever been. Like the rejection had shoved her to the edge of a cliff and she was hanging on by her claws.

I pressed my palm flat against the altar stone again. Pushed myself upright. My legs didn't want to hold me but I made them. The pack was still howling. No one was looking at me anymore. I was already erased.

Except for one person.

My mother—Carla—stood among the pack elders, her hands folded, her expression arranged into dignified concern. But her eyes were sharp. Satisfied. She'd been waiting for this.

I stumbled down the altar steps. No one stopped me. No one followed. The moonfire torches blurred as I walked, my body moving on autopilot while my mind tried to catch up to what had just happened. The bond was gone. Brayden had rejected me. Sydney was Luna.

I made it to the edge of the clearing before my wolf stirred again—not a whimper, but a pulse of heat that burned through the hollow space in my chest for three seconds. It hurt. It felt like fury. Then it went dark.

But it had been there. Something was still alive in me.

I didn't go back to the ceremony. I walked to the pack house, my legs shaking, my throat raw from the scream I couldn't take back. The building was empty—everyone was still at the altar, celebrating the new Luna. I climbed the stairs to the second floor, where Brayden's office overlooked the clearing. The door was unlocked. I pushed it open.

Sydney's scent hit me first. Vanilla and something sharper, layered thick in the air. Then I saw the desk. Papers scattered. A ceremonial collar lying open in its velvet box—the one traditionally sized to fit the intended mate's neck. I picked it up. Held it against my own throat.

It was too small. It had never been meant for me.

I set it down carefully. Pressed my palm flat against the desk. My hands weren't shaking anymore. The hollow ache in my chest was still there, but underneath it, something else was building. Not hope. Something colder.

I heard footsteps on the stairs. Heavy. Familiar. Brayden's boots.

I turned as he entered. Sydney was with him, her hand tucked into his, the fresh mark on her neck still bleeding slightly. She looked at me and smiled. It wasn't kind.

"You need to leave," Brayden said. His voice was flat. Authoritative. The Alpha tone threaded underneath, not quite surfaced but close enough to make my jaw ache. "This is the Luna's wing now."

"Why?" The word came out steadier than I expected.

Sydney's smile widened. Brayden's expression didn't change.

"Because you were never going to be strong enough," he said simply. "I needed a Luna who could lead. You were useful for other things."

Useful.

The word sat between us like a stone.

"What things?" I asked.

He didn't answer. Sydney did.

"The territorial reports," she said lightly. "The pack records. The healing rotations. All that boring work you're so good at." She tilted her head. "Brayden needed someone who could think strategically. That's me. You were just—"

"Enough," Brayden cut her off. But the damage was done.

I looked at him. At the man whose scent I'd recognized as my mate's before my wolf even fully woke. At the bond that was now just a cold, hollow space in my chest.

"I understand," I said quietly.

Brayden's shoulders relaxed slightly. He thought I was submitting. He thought wrong.

I walked past them, out of the office, down the stairs. My legs were steadier now. The hollow ache was still there, but the fury underneath it was louder. I made it to the front door of the pack house before I heard Sydney's voice again, calling after me.

"Oh, and Violette? Your new quarters are in the Omega wing. Someone will show you in the morning."

I didn't turn around. I pushed the door open and stepped into the night.

The Challenge Rite was in three weeks. I pressed my palm flat against the pack house wall, feeling the rough wood under my fingers. Something solid. Something real.

I had three weeks to figure out how to make my wolf wake up. And then I was going to take everything back.
