Chapter 3

    SELENA

The door closed behind him. I stood there. Alone in his office. The scent of him still clung to my skin - leather, smoke, and something darker I couldn't name. Something that made my wolf want to kneel.

The question hung in the air like smoke. Why did I start watching you, Selena, six months before your mate ever touched your sister?

Six months. Before Damian even looked at my sister twice. Before the bond started fraying. Before the first lie.

My knees felt weak. I gripped the edge of his desk until my knuckles went white. "Liar," I whispered to the empty room. "He's lying."

But Kieran Voss didn't lie. Everyone said that. His words were law because his words were truth. Even when they cut. Especially when they cut.

The door opened again. Not him. Mara. She burst in, breathless and scared. "Sel, are you okay? I saw Damian run out of here like-" She stopped. Saw me behind the Alpha's desk. Saw my face. "What happened?"

"He knew," I said. My voice didn't sound like mine.

    "Knew what?"

"That I was coming." I turned to her. "That my bond broke. That Damian slept with my sister. Kieran knew everything. Six months ago, Mara. He said he started watching me six months ago."

Mara's face went blank. Then pale. "That's... that's not possible. You would've felt it. Your wolf would've known."

"Isn't it?" I walked past her. Out into the hall. My legs moved on their own, like my wolf was dragging me forward. "Where's his office? His real one."

    "Selena, stop-"

    "Where?"

She pointed down the hall, left. Toward the private wing. Only family went there. Only blood.

I didn't knock. I pushed his door open.

Kieran stood at the window. Back to me. The storm had hit full force now. Rain lashed the glass hard enough to crack it. Lightning lit his silhouette for one second, then left him in shadow again. Black shirt. No gloves now. Hands bare, resting on the windowsill like he owned the storm.

He didn't turn. "You followed me."

    "You lied."

    "I don't lie."

"Then explain." I shut the door behind me. "Six months ago I was happy. I was planning my mating ceremony with your son. Six months ago, nothing was wrong. So why were you watching me?"

He turned then. Slow. His gold eyes were darker in this light. Almost brown. Almost human. Almost safe.

    "Come here," he said.

    I didn't move. "Answer me."

    "Come here, Selena."

Something in his voice made my wolf whine. Not in fear. In recognition. The sound she made when she sensed something bigger than both of us. Something ancient.

I crossed the room. Stopped two feet away. Close enough to see the scar that cut through his left eyebrow. Close enough to see his pulse at his throat. Steady. Calm. Too calm.

"You want to know why," he said.

    "Yes."

He reached out. One finger. Touched my wrist. Right where the broken bond had burned hours ago. The skin was still red there. Tender. Raw.

The moment he touched me, the pain stopped. Not dulled. Not eased. Stopped. Like someone cut the wire. The ache in my chest, the ice in my veins, the wolf's screaming rage... gone. Just silence. Warmth. Peace I hadn't felt in hours.

I gasped. Pulled back like I'd been burned. "What did you do?"

"Nothing." He dropped his hand. "You felt it."

    "That's impossible. The bond-break-"

"The bond-break hurts because your wolf thinks she lost her mate," Kieran said. His voice was quiet. Final. "But what if she didn't?"

My blood went cold. Colder than the rain outside. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying Damian Callahan was never your true mate." His eyes held mine. No pity. No guilt. Just fact. Hard and sharp. "The bond you felt with him was weak. False. A shadow of what it should be. That's why it broke so easy. That's why your sister could walk between you without the pack tearing her apart."

"No." I shook my head. "No, we had three years-"

"Three years of comfort," he interrupted. "Of familiarity. Of a boy who liked the idea of you. But not of the pull. Not of the madness. Not of the way your wolf goes quiet when the right male is in the room."

He stepped closer. One step. Now I could smell him again. That smoke and leather scent wrapped around me, and my wolf...

My wolf sighed. Loud. Traitorous. Like she'd been holding her breath for years and finally exhaled.

"Six months ago," Kieran said, voice dropping low, "you walked past the training yard. You didn't see me. I was on the balcony above. But you stopped. For three seconds. You looked up. Like you felt something."

I remembered. A chill down my spine. I'd told Mara I felt someone watching. She'd laughed it off.

"That was me," he said. "That was my wolf recognizing you."

The room tilted. The floor felt unsteady. "You're my-"

    "True mate," he finished. "Yes."

The word hit harder than the bond breaking. Harder than seeing my sister in Damian's bed. True mate. The one-in-a-million bond wolves killed for. The bond that didn't break. Didn't fade. Didn't let you breathe right if you were apart too long. The bond that made everything else feel like a lie.

"Then why didn't you-" My voice broke. "Why didn't you claim me? Six months ago? Why let me suffer with him? Why let him-"

Kieran's jaw tightened. For the first time, his mask cracked. Just a little. Just enough to see the man under the Alpha.

"Because you were bonded to my son," he said. "Because claiming you then would have torn this pack apart. Because I thought... I thought if I waited, if I watched, if I gave you time, the false bond would break on its own and you'd come to me without blood."

He laughed once. Bitter. Ugly. "I was wrong. He broke you first. And now you're here, in a red dress, offering yourself to me for revenge."

He reached up. Tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was careful. Like I might shatter. Like I was glass and he was fire.

"I don't want revenge, Selena," he whispered. "I want you. I have for six months. But I won't take you as a weapon against my son."

My wolf purred. Loud. Obvious. The sound vibrated through my chest and into the room.

"No," I said. But my voice was weak. Broken. "You're lying. You're trying to-"

The office door crashed open again.

Damian stood there. But he wasn't alone. My sister was with him. Her hair was still messy from his bed. Her smile was still sweet. Cruel.

And in her hand, she held a piece of paper. Old. Cracked at the edges. A seal at the bottom I recognized. The pack's mating contract. Mine and Damian's. Signed three years ago in front of the whole pack.

She smiled. Sweet and cruel. "Father," she said, looking right at Kieran. Not at me. "You can't claim her. She's already bound. By law. By contract. And contracts don't break just because bonds do."

Kieran's gold eyes flashed. Molten. Dangerous. The Alpha came out, fast and sharp.

And my wolf realized something with sick clarity: This wasn't just about revenge anymore.

    This was about war.
