Chapter 2

POV: Ellie

The scraping sound of heavy cardboard dragging across concrete woke me before my alarm went off.

I threw on a robe and followed the noise through the kitchen, down the short breezeway, and toward the finished room off the garage. The door stood wide open.

Inside, Luke was hauling a taped cardboard box out into the corridor. Stacked against the cold garage wall were three of my unopened flat-pack shelves, two framed botanical prints I had bought for the walls, and a plastic tote filled with my notebooks and reference books.

"Luke?" I stopped in the doorway, the draft from the garage chilling my bare ankles. "What are you doing?"

He wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his forearm and offered me that bright, easy grin. "Hey, you're up. Perfect timing. Could you grab the other end of this tote? I want to slide it into the corner behind the lawnmower."

I didn't move. My gaze drifted past him, taking in the small room.

It wasn't large—maybe ten by twelve—with a single rectangular window looking out over the overgrown hydrangea bushes in the backyard. But it had four solid walls, a heating vent, and a door that locked. We had spent six months agreeing on how to use it. In two weeks, for my thirty-first birthday, I was supposed to paint the walls sage green and finally move my desk in here.

Now, a narrow twin mattress sat on the floor against the far wall.

"Why is there a bed in here?" I asked. My voice came out flat, hollowed out by disbelief.

"Oh, right," Luke said casually, brushing dust from his gray t-shirt. "Madison had a rough night. Maya was tossing and turning in the guest bed, having nightmares about their old house. Neither of them got a wink of sleep. Madison came down around five, basically in tears."

"So you decided to put Maya in here?"

"She needs her own space, Ellie," Luke said, as if explaining something obvious to a slow child. "A kid that age has been through trauma. She needs a door she can shut so she feels secure."

"And what about my study?"

Luke blinked, his expression shifting into mild exasperation. "Your study? Ellie, you haven't even painted the trim yet."

"Because you told me to wait until spring so we could open the windows for the fumes," I snapped, taking a step into the room. "We spent three months clearing out the old lawn equipment. We ordered the flooring. We shook hands on this, Luke."

"That was before an actual emergency happened." Luke sighed, resting both hands on his hips. "Look around. You don't even use this room yet. It's just sitting here holding empty boxes."

"It's holding *my* things. It's my space."

"It's a storage room," he countered, his voice rising just enough to carry down the hallway. "And right now, a six-year-old girl is sharing a cramped guest bed with her mother because her father turned into a monster and threw her out of her home. You really want to tell Madison that her daughter has to be miserable so you can put up a desk you haven't bought yet?"

The air in my chest thinned. He did this every single time we disagreed. He framed his choices as basic human decency, which left any objection I had looking like pure malice.

"You should have asked me," I said, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "You don't just clear out my belongings while I'm asleep."

"I was trying to save you the hassle," he said smoothly, closing the distance between us. He reached out, his warm hands cupping my shoulders, using the exact gentle pressure that used to reassure me. "Madison was embarrassed to even ask. She felt so guilty she almost packed her bags to sleep in the car. I told her she was crazy. I told her, 'Ellie is the kindest, most generous person I know. She'd never let a little girl suffer just for an empty room.'"

His fingers squeezed gently, his thumbs brushing my collarbones.

"Don't prove me wrong, El," he whispered, staring into my eyes with an earnestness that made my skin crawl. "You're better than this. They have nowhere else to go. Just let Maya have this little corner for a few weeks. Please?"

I stared at his gray t-shirt.

The compliment wasn't a compliment; it was a leash. If I insisted on my room, I became selfish, cold, and cruel. I became the wicked woman kicking a traumatized child into a corner.

"Fine," I whispered.

The word tasted like ash on my tongue.

"I knew it," Luke smiled, kissing my temple with immediate relief. "You're amazing. Seriously. Thank you, babe."

He let go of me instantly, turning back to the garage to hoist another box.

I stood frozen on the threshold as soft footsteps approached down the breezeway. Madison appeared, wearing an oversized cable-knit sweater that slipped slightly off one shoulder, her blond hair tied in a loose, messy bun. She held Maya by the hand.

"Luke?" Madison hesitated, looking between the two of us with wide, apologetic eyes. "Is... is everything okay? We heard voices. If this is an inconvenience, truly, Maya and I can make the guest bed work—"

"It's completely fine, Maddy," Luke interrupted, stepping forward with an easy, protective authority. "Ellie and I just talked about it. She was totally on board. In fact, she insisted Maya take the room so she could have some privacy."

Madison looked at me, her eyes glistening with sudden moisture. "Ellie... I don't even know what to say. You have a heart of gold. Most women wouldn't be half as understanding as you are."

"Don't worry about it," I managed to say. The words felt mechanical, detached from whatever was breaking inside me.

"Maya, honey," Madison knelt down, nudging the little girl forward. "Say thank you to Auntie Ellie."

The child looked up at me from beneath heavy bangs. In her small hands, she still clutched the gray rabbit with the shredded ears. Her mouth moved slightly, but no sound came out. Instead, she just gave a timid nod, her big eyes darting nervously toward the room behind me.

"Come on," Luke said warmly, kneeling beside Maya. "Let's get your bed made up. Look what your mom found in the trunk."

From one of the open suitcases by the wall, Luke pulled out a set of bright pink floral sheets, patterned with tiny cartoon daisies.

I stood there, nailed to the floorboards, watching them move into the space that was supposed to be mine.

Luke shook out the fitted sheet, snapping the elastic corners over the mattress. Madison smoothed out the flat sheet with practiced, gentle hands, humming a soft tune under her breath. Maya placed her battered stuffed rabbit in the center of the pillow, her small shoulders visibly relaxing as she claimed the corner.

My framed art prints sat on the damp concrete floor of the garage, propped against a stack of discarded tires.

My notebooks—pages filled with private thoughts, outlines, and world-building that Luke had once laughed off as a silly waste of time—were shoved under a shelf next to a can of weed killer.

"Looks cozy, doesn't it?" Luke asked, standing up and admiring the newly made bed with pure satisfaction.

"It's perfect," Madison whispered, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "It really is."

Neither of them looked at me.

I backed out of the doorway, stepping over the threshold into the cold garage. Luke hadn't just given away a spare room. He had taken the only boundary I had asked for, dismantled it without a second thought, and handed it to another woman with a smile.

I looked down at the dusty boxes containing my dreams, stacked in the dark beside the garden tools.

Something inside me, quiet and enduring, finally snapped clean in two.
