Chapter 3

POV: Ellie

The kitchen smelled like lavender and hazelnut creamer, a sweet, sickly scent that wasn’t mine.

On the island sat three open cardboard boxes of organic cereal, a carton of oat milk left out to sweat on the marble, and a spread of Maya’s washable markers. In just two weeks, the careful order I had kept for four years had dissolved completely.

The back door clicked open, and Luke walked in holding a cardboard drink carrier from the café downtown.

"Morning, everyone," he said brightly, setting the tray down.

Madison hurried into the kitchen from the breezeway, wearing an oversized beige cardigan and gray leggings. Her blond hair was gathered in a loose, effortless knot at the crown of her head.

"Tell me that’s what I think it is," Madison said, pressing a hand to her chest.

Luke smiled, pulling out a plastic cup with condensation dripping down the plastic. "Iced blonde latte, oat milk, two pumps of sugar-free vanilla. Extra ice."

Madison took it with both hands, letting her fingers brush his. A delicate flush touched her cheeks. "Luke, you remembered. I haven't had this since college."

"Of course I remembered," Luke said smoothly. "You used to drink two of those during finals week every semester."

I stood by the stove, holding an empty mug.

Luke looked up, catching my gaze. He reached into the drink carrier, pulled out a single hot paper cup, and set it on the edge of the counter near the sink.

"Grabbed you an Americano, El," he said casually.

"I drink dark roast with a splash of whole milk," I said, my voice quiet. "I’ve had the exact same order for seven years."

Luke’s smile flickered, a faint crease forming between his brows. "They were out of the house drip, so I improvised. It’s still coffee, babe."

He brushed past me to open the refrigerator, pulling out a jug of water.

"Did you take the Subaru in to get the brakes inspected?" I asked, looking at his back. "The pedal was shuddering on my drive home from work yesterday. You said you’d take it to the shop this morning."

Luke paused, the fridge door half-open. He let out a small, self-deprecating chuckle and shook his head.

"Shoot. I completely forgot, El."

"You forgot?"

"Maya's school enrollment had a mix-up with the district paperwork," he explained, shutting the door. "Madison’s car was making a weird grinding noise when she started it, and she panicked. I had to look at her alternator and drive them over to the administration building before the cutoff at nine."

"You took time off work for that?"

"I had comp time to burn," Luke said, his tone turning slightly defensive. "And Madison doesn't know the area yet. If Maya missed the registration window, she’d have had to wait until the winter semester. You wouldn't want a child falling behind, would you?"

Every time. The same formula, the same moral high ground.

"Luke, the brakes are a safety issue," I said, keeping my hands resting flat on the cool granite. "You promised you’d handle it on your way to the office."

"I’ll do it tomorrow," he said, waving a hand dismissively. "Just take the train into the city today. It's only a fifteen-minute walk to the station."

"It's pouring rain outside."

Before Luke could respond, Madison stepped forward, her expression crumbling into soft guilt.

"Ellie, please don't be upset with him," Madison whispered, setting her latte on the counter. "It’s my fault. I shouldn't have panicked about the car. Luke was just trying to help us out. If I had known, I would have taken an Uber."

"It's fine, Maddy," Luke cut in immediately, his voice softening in a way it hadn't for me in months. "You don't need to apologize for needing help. We're a team here."

*We're a team.*

The words hit me like a slap. I looked at the two of them standing side by side by the breakfast bar, perfectly aligned, while I stood on the other side of the counter like an uninvited guest.

"I need to get ready for work," I said.

I left the untouched Americano on the counter and walked upstairs.

By five that afternoon, the rain had settled into a damp, gray drizzle.

I took the train back from the office, my coat damp around the collar. When I pushed open the front door, the sound of an electric screwdriver echoed from the living room.

In the center of the hardwood floor, surrounded by styrofoam packing peanuts and plastic wrap, was an unbuilt white desk with scalloped pink drawer handles. Maya sat on the rug nearby, quietly lining up her colored pencils, while Madison knelt on the floor holding a side panel upright.

Luke was on his knees, his sleeves pushed up to his elbows, turning a screw into the pre-drilled particle board.

A box with heavy shipping labels sat discarded by the sofa. A flat-pack study desk, ordered online and delivered that morning.

I stood in the entryway, the scene burning into my vision.

Two days ago, Luke had hauled my flat-pack bookshelves into the damp garage, tossing them against the concrete because he insisted we didn't have the time or the space. Now, he was sweating on the living room rug, building a brand-new desk for another woman's child before he had even taken off his work boots.

"Hold that bracket steady, Maddy," Luke murmured, his brow furrowed with focus. "Almost got it."

"Like this?" Madison adjusted her grip, leaning closer so her shoulder brushed against his arm. "God, Luke, you're amazing at this. Richard would have thrown the instructions across the room and hired a handyman."

Luke let out a low, satisfied laugh. "Richard was an idiot who didn't know how to use a wrench."

Maya giggled, looking up from her pencils. "Uncle Luke fixed my bed, too."

"That's right, kiddo," Luke said, winking at the girl. "Uncle Luke's got you covered."

None of them noticed me standing by the coat rack.

I didn't say a word. I slipped off my damp flats, picked up my work tote, and walked quietly into the kitchen.

I sat at the small breakfast table, pulling my laptop out from behind the Dutch oven in the bottom cabinet. I opened the browser, entered the private password for my encrypted drive, and logged into the hidden email account I had maintained for two years under the name *E. Lane*.

My inbox had one unread message.

The sender wasn't a standard rejection template. It was an email from a senior editor at Horizon Press.

My pulse jumped into my throat.

*Dear Ms. Lane,*

*We have finished reviewing your manuscript, 'A Place in the Sun.' The editorial board was thoroughly captivated by your voice, your pacing, and the emotional resonance of your characters. We believe this novel has tremendous commercial potential.*

*We would love to schedule a preliminary call this Friday to discuss an offer for a two-book publishing contract.*

*Please let us know your availability.*

I stared at the screen, my breath catching in my chest.

Two years of writing in the dark. Two years of waking up at five in the morning while Luke slept, of typing quietly in the corners of my life while he told me romance novels were a silly hobby that would never pay the bills.

It was real. They wanted it. They wanted me.

A wild, frantic warmth surged through my blood. My first, immediate instinct was to stand up, run into the living room, and shout it out loud. I wanted to throw my arms around Luke’s neck, feel him lift me off the ground, and hear him say he was proud of me.

I pushed the chair back an inch and looked through the kitchen archway.

Luke was leaning over the white desk, his hand resting gently over Madison’s fingers as he guided her grip on the screwdriver.

"No, angle it down slightly," Luke said softly, his voice low and patient. "There. Now turn it slow."

Madison looked up at him, her lips curved into a fragile, radiant smile. "Like that?"

"Exactly like that," he said, holding her gaze a second longer than necessary.

The heat in my chest froze, turning into cold, sharp stone.

If I told him, he would call it a fluke. He would ask how much the advance was, calculate what cut could help Madison with her legal retainers, or patronizingly tell me not to quit my day job. He would find a way to minimize it until it fit inside the tiny box he had assigned to me.

He wasn't my partner anymore. He hadn't been for a long time.

Slowly, carefully, I slid the chair back under the table.

I looked down at the bright screen, at the words offering me a future, and clicked the reply button.

*Dear Editorial Team,* I typed, my fingers steady and sure. *I would be thrilled to speak with you this Friday.*

I hit send.

Then I closed the laptop, shut the lid, and locked the screen.

Luke laughed from the other room, a bright, triumphant sound as a screw tightened into place.

I sat in the dim kitchen, listening to the man I married build a life for someone else, and felt the final cord between us snap completely silent.

He would never know. Not a single word.
