Chapter 3

The bedroom door creaked open. Claire Vargas, looking impossibly sweet and innocent at seventeen, walked in carrying a tray with a single glass of orange juice. Her smile was as bright and artificial as the morning sun.

"There you are! I was worried you'd miss breakfast," Claire said, her voice dripping with a fake concern that made Alexandr's blood run cold.

Seeing the face of her murderer, so young and seemingly harmless, was a visceral shock. A wave of pure, undiluted hatred rose in her throat, hot as bile. She forced it down, locking it away behind a carefully constructed mask. She was eighteen now, not the jaded, broken woman who had died on a warehouse floor. She had to be that girl again.

She lowered her gaze, adopting a shy, slightly intimidated expression that was a perfect echo of her first time around.

"Sorry," Alexandr mumbled, staring at her bare feet on the expensive rug. "This room is just... a lot to take in."

Claire's smile tightened for a fraction of a second. Alexandr saw it. Claire loved seeing her feel like an outsider, like she didn't belong in this world of inherited wealth.

Claire set the tray down and sat on the edge of the bed, her movements graceful and practiced. She took Alexandr's hand in hers. "Don't worry, I'll help you get used to everything. We're sisters, after all."

The touch of Claire's hand felt like a cold snake coiling around her wrist. Alexandr had to fight the violent urge to flinch, to snatch her hand away. Instead, she let her own hand lie limp and passive in Claire's grasp.

Claire led her downstairs, her hand never leaving Alexandr's arm, a proprietary gesture for the benefit of the household staff. The grand dining room was just as she remembered: a long, polished mahogany table, impossibly high ceilings, and an oppressive silence.

Arthur and Lorraine Vargas were already seated. Her father, Arthur, gave her a curt nod over the top of his Wall Street Journal. Her mother, Lorraine, offered a tepid smile that didn't reach her cold, assessing eyes. They made polite, distant small talk about her journey from the foster home, their questions feeling more like an interview than a family welcome. The memory of their indifference to her death in the last life fueled Alexandr's cold resolve. They were not her family. They were obstacles.

Claire, ever the master manipulator, chose her moment perfectly. "Father," she said, her voice soft and full of false nobility. "Now that Alexandr is back... maybe it's best if I move out. She is the true daughter, after all. This is her place."

It was the exact same play as last time. A brilliant move designed to paint herself as selfless while positioning Alexandr as a threat to her position, forcing her parents to reassure her.

"Don't be silly, darling!" Lorraine protested immediately, reaching across the table to pat Claire's hand. "This is your home! It will always be your home."

Arthur folded his paper, his expression stern. "Claire, you are a Vargas in every way that matters."

They both looked at Alexandr, their gazes a mixture of expectation and warning. They expected resentment, a sullen silence, a confirmation that she was the ungrateful interloper.

Instead, Alexandr looked up, her eyes wide and shimmering with unshed tears.

"Please don't go, Claire," she said, her voice trembling just enough to be convincing. "I... I don't know anyone here. I'd be so lonely without a sister."

The reaction was the opposite of what they expected. Claire was momentarily thrown, her script rendered useless. Arthur and Lorraine exchanged a look of surprise, which quickly morphed into one of satisfaction. The girl was docile. Non—threatening.

Alexandr had them. Her first small victory.

"But," she added, turning her gaze to Arthur, making herself look small and hesitant. "There is one thing. If it's not too much trouble."

"What is it?" Arthur asked, his tone softening slightly, feeling magnanimous in the face of her meekness.

"I know my legal name is Alexandr Vargas now," she said softly. "But... my friends in foster care, everyone I knew... they called me Alexandr Fields. Could I... could I ask that the staff still call me that, just for a little while? It would make me feel more comfortable."

It was a strategic masterstroke. A way to create a psychological barrier, to reject the name she despised, all under the guise of insecurity.

Arthur saw it as a sign of low self—esteem, a girl not yet ready to embrace her new status. He found it pathetic, but convenient.

"Of course," he agreed easily. "If it makes the transition easier for you."

Claire watched, a flicker of suspicion in her eyes. She couldn't pinpoint what was wrong, but the dynamic felt... off.

Alexandr gave a grateful, timid smile. Inwardly, she was drawing the battle lines. She had successfully established her cover as a harmless, broken thing, all while subtly rejecting the very identity they sought to impose on her. The game had begun.
