Chapter 2

The asset manager was already in the living room when I arrived at the villa.

Briefcase on the coffee table. Papers fanned out. He had the calm of a man who'd been expecting this meeting longer than I had.

They had this ready. The realization settled cold in my stomach as I unbuttoned my coat.

Charles stood by the fireplace, arms folded. He didn't look like a man whose family had just detonated in public. He looked like a man closing a deal that had been pending too long.

"Sit down," he said.

I sat. On my own terms, at my own pace.

He slid the document across the coffee table without ceremony. Voluntary Share Transfer Agreement. My mother's twenty percent—the stake she'd spent fifteen years building—to be signed over to Mia. No consideration. No compensation. Just gone.

My throat tightened. Once. Then I smoothed it flat.

She built Sophia Corp from one borrowed desk. I could still hear her voice. I built it for you, Serena. Every brick.

Charles's expression said he expected this to take five minutes.

"Two conditions," I said.

He waited.

"First: the termination of our father-daughter relationship is notarized, published, and pinned across every major platform. In writing. Permanent." I kept my tone conversational, like we were discussing a restaurant booking. "I owe you nothing. You have no claim on me. Ever again."

The fire popped. He didn't move.

"Second." I pulled the document toward me without signing it. "Two hundred million dollars. Wire transfer, initiated tonight. Bank-issued MT103 confirmation and your relationship manager's signature as guarantee." I looked up. "If the wire doesn't clear within twenty-four hours of notarization, I take this to the New York Supreme Court."

"You're bluffing," Charles said.

"I really am not. The shares are worth over a billion at current valuation. You're still getting the better end of this." I set the pen down. "Both conditions. Or I don't sign."

Silence stretched between us.

Mia appeared in the doorway—soft clothes, careful expression, the portrait of an innocent bystander. "Serena, can't we just—"

"I wasn't speaking to you."

She blinked. The tears came fast and clean. I felt nothing.

Charles stared at the document. His jaw worked. Then, without a word, he reached into his jacket and produced a wire confirmation he'd had staged in advance.

He'd already set aside the two hundred million. He'd known I'd negotiate. He'd just hoped for less.

You never understood me, I thought. Not once in twenty-three years.

I signed. Stood up. Didn't let him draw it out.

"Congratulations, Mr. Voss." I buttoned my coat. "You've wanted those shares since the day my mother died. I hope they're worth it."

His face, in the moment after I signed, carried nothing. Not relief, not regret. Just the blankness of a man who'd been performing fatherhood for so long he'd forgotten what any of the actual feelings felt like.

I called him Dad for twenty-three years.

I packed one bag. Fast. I didn't linger over anything—the couture gowns could stay, the memories sewn into them could stay, all of it could stay. Lucas's bracelet went in the trash. The ceramic lamp Mia had made me—the one I'd kept on my nightstand like it meant something—went next to it.

Downstairs, Charles signed the public severance notice without looking up. The moment the pen lifted, his shoulders dropped a fraction. The quiet exhale of a man setting down a weight.

He's relieved.

I understood it. I just refused to let it mean anything.

"I'll be in touch about the notarization timeline," I said. His name sat at the back of my throat where Dad used to live, and I left it there. He hadn't earned it for a long time.

I walked out.

The night air was cold and clean and tasted like something beginning.

Two hundred million and my freedom. Not nothing. Not nearly enough.

Charles would retaliate the moment he realized what I was building. He had thirty years of industry relationships and the full weight of Charleaux Corporation to deploy. What he'd always lacked was patience—he wanted quick victories, clean exits. He didn't know how to play a long game.

I could use that.

But not alone. I needed a name that would make him hesitate before his next move. A presence so significant that coming after me would cost more than he was willing to pay.

I hailed a cab. Gave the address of The Lanya.

All the way there, I turned one name over in my mind.

Damon Arthur.

The question wasn't whether he was powerful enough—he was the most powerful man on Wall Street and everyone knew it. The question was whether I had something worth offering him.

I think I do, I thought, watching rain blur the city into streaks of light. I know something his whole team doesn't. And I know it right now, tonight, when it still matters.

I just had to hope I was right.
