Chapter 3

Three in the morning, and the city was still talking about me.

I lay on the hotel bed fully dressed, phone propped on my chest. The trending topics were exactly what I'd expected.

SERENA VOSS BREAKS ENGAGEMENT IN PUBLIC SPECTACLE.

CHARLEAUX HEIRESS DISOWNED — FATHER AND DAUGHTER SPLIT.

VOSS GIRL: JILTED, CAST OUT, AND ALONE.

The footage of Mia and Lucas? Buried. Charles's PR team had gotten to it within twenty minutes. What remained was all narrative—and the narrative was that I was unstable, vindictive, and finished.

I put the phone face-down.

Rain hammered the windows. Below, forty floors down, the city moved through its own dark rhythms—taxis, late-night pedestrians, streetlights bleeding into puddles.

Think. I sat up and pressed my palms flat against the duvet. Think like she taught you.

My mother had built Sophia Corp on two things: information and timing. The most valuable asset a person could have, she'd said, wasn't money or connections. It was knowing something useful before everyone else did, and knowing exactly when to use it.

I knew something right now. Tonight. When it still mattered.

Three weeks ago, reviewing Charleaux's investment portfolio, I'd flagged a deep-sea mineral extraction project. Arthur Consortium had been quietly circling it. The deal was structured through three offshore shells, and the ownership chain had never sat right with me. I'd pulled the thread.

The ultimate beneficial owner was a man named Ryan Cole. Five years ago, under a different name, he'd been prosecuted for wire fraud. Eighteen months served. New identity. Same playbook.

Arthur's team would find it eventually. But eventually had a cost. If he flew out tonight and the escrow deposit cleared, the money would move before any investigation could catch it. Cross-border asset recovery from shell jurisdictions averaged three years.

Eight hundred million dollars. Three years.

I went to the window.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom rolled into the hotel's private entry below. Rain hit the hood and ran off in sheets. My pulse kicked once before I registered the plates.

Arthur Consortium.

He was here. He was leaving for the airport tonight.

Right now.

I grabbed my coat and ran.

The lobby was quiet at this hour. I spotted Vincent near the revolving doors—mid-thirties, silver tie, the settled calm of a man who managed a hundred emergencies before breakfast and found all of them manageable.

"Vincent." I crossed the marble at a near-run. "Serena Voss. I need five minutes with Mr. Arthur."

"Ms. Voss." Polite. Immovable. "He's en route to the airport. His schedule is—"

"The deep-sea extraction project." I kept my voice low and precise. "The one he's flying to inspect. It's fraud. Three offshore shells, and the ultimate beneficial owner is Ryan Cole—convicted of wire fraud five years ago under a different name. Your team will catch it. But not before the escrow deposit clears, and once that money moves, you're looking at three years of cross-border litigation to get it back."

Vincent looked at me. A long, measuring moment.

Then he stepped away and touched his earpiece.

The lobby's fountain bubbled. Rain sheeted against the glass.

Please. Small and private and more honest than anything I'd said all night. Please let this work.

Vincent returned. "Mr. Arthur will see you. Quickly."

The car was running. The window came down without a sound.

His profile cut against the darkness—jaw sharp, brow slightly drawn, the particular stillness of a man who'd never once needed to prove anything to any room he walked into. Charcoal suit at three in the morning, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"How do you know?" he said.

No greeting. No buildup. Straight as a blade.

I told him. All of it—the shell structure, Cole's history, the escrow timeline, the window. I spoke quickly and didn't waste words. Rain was soaking through my coat and running down my neck and I refused to acknowledge any of it.

When I finished, silence held.

He looked at me—really looked, the kind of level, taking-measure attention that most people reserved for problems they weren't sure they could solve—and said nothing.

"What do you want?" he asked finally.

Everything, I thought. My mother's company. My name back. To burn down the people who killed me in another life.

"A deal," I said. "Beyond tonight's information, I can tell you everything about Charleaux Corporation's real financial position. I ran their strategy division for four years. I know every project, every liability, every skeleton. That's ongoing intelligence with real commercial value." I held his gaze. "In exchange, I want one thing."

A muscle shifted in his jaw.

"Marry me," I said. "Contract marriage. One year. Completely separate finances. When it ends, I walk away with nothing of yours. Legal, registered, public."

The rain. The silence.

"Why marriage?" he said. "An alliance would—"

"Not for what I need." I kept my voice steady. My hands, inside my coat pockets, were absolutely not shaking. "Charles will come after me the moment he realizes what I'm building. He'll block every deal and call in every favor until I can't operate in this city. The only thing that costs him more to fight than to work around—" I exhaled—"is your name. Being Serena Arthur buys me the space I need."

He reached sideways. Vincent handed him a folder.

Arthur Consortium's preliminary assessment of the deep-sea project. Risk items flagged in red. Three of the five exactly matched what I'd told him.

His team was already there. Not all the way there—the final report would have taken another sixteen hours—but close. He was showing me my information wasn't irreplaceable.

I looked at the report. Then I looked at him.

"Your final report takes sixteen hours," I said. "That's enough time for Cole to move the escrow deposit into a sub-custody account in a different jurisdiction. The wire confirmation lands, your entity gets paperwork, but the underlying asset doesn't exist." I closed the folder and set it on the seat. "I already have the routing number of the sub-account. I can give it to you in the next thirty seconds."

The muscle in his jaw moved again.

Rain drummed the roof.

"Get in," he said.

Two words. Quiet. Final.

The door clicked open from inside. Warm air reached out—seat heating already running, a dry towel folded on the armrest.

He knew I'd be soaked.

Something about that small detail landed soft and strange in my chest as I slid into the car.

"Thank you," I managed.

He handed me the towel without looking up. "The routing number."

I told him. Then I asked for what I actually came for.

"Marry me," I said again. Quieter this time. "Please."

The longest silence of my life.

Then: "I'll answer you in the morning."

As long as I have a wife, no one will ever look too closely at me and my little Yue." When Jasmine deliberately knocked a bowl of boiling soup onto my hand, Grady didn't even glance at my blistering skin. He frantically checked Jasmine for nonexistent scratches and yelled at me. "Why weren't you paying attention? Look at the mess you've made! You scared her." He then kicked me out to our empty penthouse as punishment, only to move Jasmine in the very next day, letting her parade around in his dress shirts and giving her my favorite custom furniture. Looking at the husband I had devoted my life to fawning over the sister he was secretly sleeping with, I didn't feel heartbroken. I just felt a deep, suffocating disgust.
