Chapter 2

The elevator doors slid shut, encasing Elena in a world of polished steel and mirrors.

Her own reflection stared back at her-a woman in a rumpled silk dress, her makeup slightly smudged, but her eyes burning with a terrifying clarity. The descent was smooth, silent, a stark contrast to the chaos she had left upstairs.

She pushed through the heavy glass doors of the lobby. The midnight air of New York City hit her, cool and sharp against her flushed skin. It was the breath of freedom. The city hummed around her, a symphony of distant sirens and the low thrum of life that never slept.

She didn't have a purse, just her phone. It was all she needed.

Standing on the curb, she opened the Uber app, her fingers steady. She didn't hesitate. She selected Uber Black. A sleek black sedan was three minutes away.

As she waited, her phone buzzed violently in her hand. Jory's face, smiling in a photo from their last vacation, filled the screen. She stared at it for a moment, a relic from a life that no longer existed.

She declined the call and, with a few swift taps, blocked his number.

The sedan pulled up silently to the curb. The driver, a man in a crisp suit, got out to open the door for her. She slid into the cool leather of the back seat.

"Where to, miss?" he asked, his voice professional and discreet.

Elena took a breath. This was the pivot. The moment her new life began.

"The Middleton Estate," she said, her voice even. "Long Island."

The driver's eyes met hers in the rearview mirror for a fraction of a second. A flicker of surprise. The Middleton Estate was practically American royalty. But he was a professional. He simply nodded.

"Of course."

The car pulled smoothly into traffic. As the city lights blurred into streaks of neon and gold, Elena closed her eyes, forcing her mind to work. She sifted through the memories of her past life, searching for the crucial details.

Tonight. It had to be tonight.

Tonight was the annual Middleton Foundation gala, which was, in reality, a carefully orchestrated matchmaking event for the family's sole, reluctant heir: Jayce Middleton IV.

In her previous life, she had been blissfully unaware, curled up on the sofa with Jory, believing his lies, while her destiny was being decided miles away. She wouldn't make that mistake again. Jayce was her only viable path. He was powerful, ruthless, and, as she knew from the bitter end of her last life, the only person who had tried to save her.

She had to reach him. Before it was too late.

Her phone buzzed again. A different number. She knew it was him.

She answered, holding the phone to her ear.

"Elena Craig, have you lost your mind?" Jory's voice was a ragged snarl, stripped of its usual charm. "You get back here right now!"

A bitter laugh escaped her lips. It was a small, ugly sound. "Jory, I believe I made myself clear. We're done."

"Done?" he spat. "Don't be a child. You walk out on me, you walk out on your family. Have you forgotten that your mother's company is hanging by a thread? Blackwood's investment is the only thing keeping it afloat. You leave me, and I pull the funding. You'll be destroying her."

The old threat. The one that had worked so perfectly last time, keeping her chained to him long after her love had curdled into obligation.

But this time, she knew it was a lie. He needed her mother's distribution network far more than they needed his hollow investment.

She tapped a light rhythm against the car window with her fingernail, an old habit from when she was deep in thought. Her voice was pure ice.

"My family," she said slowly, "is my concern. I'll take care of them myself. You don't need to worry about it."

She hung up before he could respond, then powered the phone off completely. The silence that followed was absolute.

She looked at her reflection in the darkened window. The woman staring back was a stranger. Her face was pale, her green eyes huge and shadowed. But there was a hardness in her jaw, a resolve in the set of her mouth that hadn't been there this morning. It was the look of a soldier heading into battle.

The car left the city behind, gliding onto the highway that led to the gilded shores of Long Island. The architecture began to change, the skyscrapers replaced by sprawling mansions hidden behind high walls and iron gates.

Finally, the driver turned onto a private, tree-lined road. At the end of it, a magnificent estate blazed with light, a modern-day castle against the night sky.

The Uber was stopped at a formidable security gate. A guard in a sharp uniform approached the driver's window.

Elena knew she had no invitation. This was a gamble.

She got out of the car, her silk dress whispering around her ankles. She walked to the guard booth.

"Good evening," she said, her voice calm and authoritative. "I'm Elena Craig. I believe Mrs. Matilda Middleton is expecting me."

She was betting on the matriarch's thoroughness. Matilda Middleton was known for casting a wide net for her grandson, inviting every eligible daughter of every notable family in the tri-state area.

The guard looked at his list, then spoke quietly into his radio. Elena's heart pounded against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. This was the first hurdle. If she failed here, the entire plan collapsed.

After a moment that stretched into an eternity, the guard's expression shifted. It became respectful.

"My apologies, Ms. Craig," he said. "Please, go right in. Mrs. Middleton did indeed leave instructions that any member of the Craig family should be admitted without delay."

Relief washed through her, cool and sweet. The memories were accurate.

The massive iron gates swung open. She walked up the long, winding driveway, the sounds of a string quartet and muted laughter growing louder. She smoothed down her dress and ran a hand through her hair, composing herself.

She reached the towering oak doors of the main house and pushed them open.

The scene before her was a dizzying spectacle of old money and new power. Chandeliers dripped crystals from the ceiling, champagne flowed from fountains, and the air was thick with perfume and ambition.

As she stepped inside, a hush fell over the immediate area. Heads turned. Eyes widened. They recognized her. Jory Black's fiancée. Here, alone, in the middle of the night.

Elena ignored their stares. Her gaze swept across the crowded ballroom, a predator scanning for its target.

And then she saw him.

In a shadowed alcove, away from the glittering throng, sat a man. He was alone, a glass of what looked like whiskey untouched in his hand. His dark hair was impeccably styled, his custom-tailored suit fitting his broad shoulders perfectly. Even from across the room, she could feel the aura of cold, dangerous stillness around him.

Jayce Middleton IV.

He looked up, as if sensing her stare, and his ice-blue eyes met hers across the crowded room. For a heartbeat, the world fell away. There was only the hunter and the hunted. And tonight, she wasn't sure which one she was.
