Chapter 3

A ripple of whispers followed Elena as she moved through the ballroom.

"Isn't that Jory Black's girl?"

"What is she doing here? Alone?"

"I heard he was about to close a deal with her mother's company..."

The words were like gnats, buzzing at the edge of her hearing. She ignored them. They were part of a world that was already dead to her. Her focus was singular, a straight, unwavering line to the man in the corner.

As she drew closer, she could see him more clearly. He was in the middle of a conversation, or rather, an execution. A young woman in a pale pink dress, clearly one of the hopefuls, stood before him, her smile frozen on her face.

Jayce leaned forward slightly, his voice a low murmur that still managed to carry. He was showing the woman a photo on his phone.

"...and this," he was saying, his tone dripping with a morbid fascination, "is a particularly fine example of an 18th-century amputation saw. The serrations were designed to tear through bone with maximum efficiency. Imagine the sound."

The woman, a Kensington or a Vanderbilt, Elena couldn't recall, turned a shade of green. She stammered an excuse about needing to find the powder room and fled as if her life depended on it.

A ghost of a smile, cold and sharp as a shard of glass, touched Jayce's lips. He had a reputation for being eccentric, difficult, even cruel. Elena knew the truth. It was a shield. A way to keep the piranhas at bay.

Beside him, an elderly woman with eyes as sharp as his, tapped an elegant ebony cane on the floor in mild disapproval. Matilda Middleton, the family matriarch.

Elena stopped before them.

Jayce's gaze lifted. His ice-blue eyes raked over her, from her slightly disheveled hair to the hem of her simple dress. It was a look of appraisal and instant dismissal. He was cataloging her, categorizing her, and finding her wanting.

He deployed his weapon of choice.

"Ms. Craig, isn't it?" His voice was a low, gravelly baritone that seemed to vibrate in the air. "Don't tell me you're also fascinated by pre-anesthetic surgical techniques? Perhaps we could discuss the finer points of trepanning."

He expected her to flinch, to recoil, to flee like the others.

She didn't.

She met his gaze without blinking. "I have no interest in historical tools, Mr. Middleton," she said, her voice steady and clear. "But I am interested in the men who have the precision and nerve to wield them."

The response was unexpected. A flicker of surprise registered in his eyes. The boredom receded, replaced by a glint of genuine curiosity. Matilda's perfectly sculpted eyebrows rose a fraction of an inch.

Elena knew she had only a moment before that wall of ice went back up. She had to shatter it.

She took a deep breath.

"Mr. Middleton," she said, her voice ringing with a clarity that cut through the nearby chatter. "I came here tonight to make you a proposal."

She paused, letting the weight of her words settle. The small group of people nearby fell silent, their ears straining.

"I am proposing marriage."

Dead silence.

The air in the alcove seemed to crackle. For a full ten seconds, no one moved. Then, a collective gasp rippled through the onlookers.

Jayce's face became a mask of absolute cold. The faint curiosity was gone, replaced by an arctic fury. He looked at her as if she were a particularly repulsive insect that had crawled onto his shoe.

Jory Black's fiancée. Proposing to him. The audacity was staggering.

Matilda's expression was unreadable, her sharp eyes boring into Elena, trying to peel back her layers and see the truth within.

Elena held her ground, her heart hammering against her ribs but her posture unyielding. "I'm aware of your situation," she continued, her voice lower now, for his ears only. "You need a wife to satisfy your board and your family. A placeholder. And I... I need a powerful husband to solve certain problems of my own."

She looked him straight in the eye. "It would be a transaction. A partnership. Mutually beneficial."

Slowly, deliberately, Jayce Middleton rose to his feet. He was taller than she remembered, well over six feet, and his presence was overwhelming. The shadow he cast fell over her, swallowing her whole.

He took a step closer, invading her personal space, forcing her to tilt her head back to look at him. The air was thick with his scent-expensive wool, clean soap, and something else, something cold and metallic, like a winter storm.

"And what," he whispered, his voice a dangerous rasp, "makes you think you have anything of value to offer me in this... transaction?"

His proximity was a physical assault. Anyone else would have crumbled.

Elena didn't. She took a tiny step forward, closing the remaining distance between them until the fabric of her dress brushed against his trousers.

She raised her chin, her green eyes locking with his icy blue ones.

"Because I know you, Jayce," she breathed, the words so soft only he could hear them. "I know you're not the monster everyone thinks you are."

It was a shot in the dark, a gamble based on a future he hadn't lived and a past he didn't remember.

But it hit its mark.

His pupils dilated. For a split second, the mask slipped. A flicker of something-confusion, a ghost of a memory-crossed his face before he suppressed it. He stared at her, truly seeing her for the first time, not as a socialite or a name on a list, but as an enigma.

Matilda had seen it too.

"Intriguing," the matriarch said, her voice cutting through the tension. "Jayce. Take Ms. Craig to the study. Now."

Jayce tore his eyes from Elena's, gave his grandmother a sharp nod, and turned on his heel. He didn't wait for her.

Elena's knees felt weak, but she forced them to hold. She had done it. She had wagered everything on a single sentence.

And she had won the first hand.
