Chapter 1

The heavy glass door of the planning department swung inward, and the first thing that caught my eye was Sloane Bennett.

More accurately, the bag resting against her hip.

It was an azure mini handbag, the signature piece from the summer stardust collection. Retail price on the official site: twenty thousand four hundred dollars.

My feet stayed glued to the carpet.

Last night, walking past the coffee table in the apartment, Ethan’s phone screen had lit up with an alert from the luxury brand’s carrier service: *Your package is scheduled for delivery today. Enjoy your purchase.*

I had smiled to myself in the dark, thinking of my upcoming birthday today. I even tapped the notification back to unread so he wouldn't know I'd spoiled his surprise.

Now, the blue leather gleamed under the harsh fluorescent office lighting.

"Is that brand new, Sloane?"

A cluster of coworkers surrounded her cubicle, leaning over the partition.

"Let me touch the hardware," another squealed. "Wait, isn't that the stardust limited drop? That’s over twenty grand!"

"Twenty thousand four hundred, before tax," Sloane corrected smoothly, her fingers casually smoothing a stray hair behind her ear. Her lips curled, radiant and thoroughly smug. "I told him it was far too much, but he wouldn't listen."

"Your boyfriend did this?" someone asked loudly. "God, what does he even do? He spoils you rotten!"

"He's ambitious," Sloane replied, lifting the bag slightly so the gold clasp caught the light. "It arrived yesterday. Just a little something to celebrate our anniversary."

The air turned thin in my lungs.

"An anniversary?" my voice came out flat, slicing through the giggles.

Sloane turned toward me, her smile sharpening at the edges. "Isla. Good morning. Yes, our anniversary. Some men actually know how to mark an occasion properly."

"He bought that yesterday?" I asked, taking one step forward.

"Delivered straight to his hands," she murmured, tilting her chin up. "Why? Do you have an eye for limited editions too, or do you just prefer browsing online catalogs?"

The surrounding girls laughed softly, exchanging knowing glances.

I said nothing. My fingernails dug hard into my palms, cold and rigid.

Three years.

I had been with Ethan Miller since our freshman year of college, through every late-night study session, every cheap takeout box, right up to our post-grad internships. I was the one who pulled strings behind the scenes, using my family's clout to slip his resume straight onto the hiring director's desk at our firm without ever putting my real last name on the paperwork.

My entire plan had been mapped out. In six months, once he secured the managerial promotion he craved, I was going to tell him who owned the company. I was going to hand him the keys to the future we talked about, right before we walked down the aisle.

"Are you alright, Isla?" Sloane asked, her gaze dropping mockingly to my plain canvas tote. "You look pale. Didn't sleep well?"

"I slept fine," I said, every word clipped.

"Good. Because the regional deck needs formatting by noon. Don't fall behind." She spun back to her desk, laughing at another coworker's compliment.

I turned around and walked toward my desk without another sound.

*Celebrate our anniversary.*

The words scraped against my ribcage.

The rest of the day blurred into a smear of clacking keyboards and ringing desk phones. Ethan didn’t show up to his cubicle on the floor above. By six in the evening, his chair remained empty.

When eight rolled around, I dialed his number.

"The number you have called is temporarily unavailable," the automated operator chimed. "Please try again later."

I tried again at nine. Then at ten.

Straight to voicemail.

Midnight passed. The calendar on my screen ticked over to 2026. My birthday.

The apartment stayed silent. The refrigerator hummed against the quiet room, a steady, grating drone. I sat on the edge of the sofa where his jacket usually hung, holding my phone until the screen went black, lighting it again with a thumb press, then watching it fade.

He never came home.

The digital clock on the microwave shifted to 3:14 AM.

A notification vibrated against my knee.

An Instagram post from Sloane Bennett.

I tapped the screen.

The image loaded instantly in high resolution.

Two hands rested against a dark linen restaurant tablecloth, fingers intertwined, palms pressed tight together.

The caption read: *Future is ours.*

My gaze froze on the left hand.

The silver watch band with the slight scratch near the bezel, a faint white scar across the knuckle of his index finger from a kitchen knife accident sophomore year—I could have picked that hand out of a crowd of ten thousand men.

It belonged to Ethan.

A strange sensation washed over me, like an invisible hand gripping my heart, squeezing until the pulse stopped, releasing just enough for a gasp, then crushing down again.

I stared at the screen until my vision blurred with stinging heat.

*Future is ours.*

He had taken the salary earned from the job I secured for him, bought a twenty-thousand-dollar bag for a woman he met three months ago, and spent the night of my birthday declaring his future to the world.

He didn't even have the spine to send a breakup text.

A low, dry laugh slipped out of my throat, cutting into the empty apartment.

My eyes burned crimson, hot and raw, but not a single tear fell down my cheeks. The weakness inside me snapped clean in half, replaced by an icy, settling weight.

I stared down at the brightly lit phone.

I tapped Ethan's contact info. I didn't type a confrontation. I didn't demand an explanation. I didn't ask where he was sleeping tonight.

My thumb pressed down on his name, moved to the red prompt, and clicked delete.

His chat thread vanished into empty space.

"You'll regret this," I whispered into the quiet dark.

The screen illuminated my face for a split second before I locked it and stood up. It was time to make a phone call to the top floor of the corporate tower—a call I had put off for three entire years.
