Chapter 2

The front door clicked open at seven in the morning.

Ethan stepped inside, carrying the heavy scent of sweet tuberose perfume and cheap triumph. He hung his coat on the rack, kicked off his dress shoes, and strolled into the living room as if he owned the floorboards beneath him.

He didn't flinch when he spotted me on the sofa. Instead, he pulled out an armchair, sat down across from me, and leaned back.

"You saw it, didn't you?" he asked.

My throat burned like raw sandpaper. I hadn't slept a single second, my eyes dry and stinging.

"Why?" The single word grated out of my chest, barely louder than a whisper.

I waited for the usual excuses. I waited for him to claim he fell head over heels, that he couldn't control his heart, or that the spark between us died months ago.

Ethan tapped his fingers against his knee, looking straight at me.

"I want to secure my place at Whitmore," he said flatly.

The bluntness hit like a slap.

"You want to stay?" I repeated, my voice cracking.

"Look at the board, Isla," he said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "You're a wonderful girl. I care about you. Hell, I like you a lot. But liking someone doesn't pay the rent. It doesn't build a career."

"So you throw away three years?"

"Sloane isn't half the woman you are," he continued without missing a beat, completely unbothered. "She's vain, she's loud, and she's exhausting. But she claimed Vice President Marcus Reed was a close family connection. Do you know what that means for someone like me?"

I stared at him, motionless. "Tell me."

"I come from a non-target school," he snapped, his voice tight with bitter frustration. "I don't have family wealth. I don't have connections. Even with you pulling strings to get my resume past HR for an internship, what comes next? You think hard work alone gets you a permanent seat at the table? I can bust my ass for ten years and never get past senior associate."

He pointed a finger at the coffee table between us.

"If I want to survive here, I need real leverage. I need someone who can put my name directly in front of the board. I can only rely on her."

A wild, sharp impulse rose in my throat.

I almost laughed aloud.

He had calculated every ounce of his future, weighing women like stock options, and arrived at a corporate VP's niece. He had no idea my father was the Chairman of the entire conglomerate. He had no clue I had already drafted his managerial transfer for his six-month review, ready to hand him the very empire he thought he had to crawl through dirt to touch.

All of that dissolved into dust right before my eyes.

"Fine," I said, the tremor leaving my voice entirely. "I'll step aside."

Ethan blinked, clearly caught off guard by how fast the fight drained out of the room.

"I hope you don't regret this," I added, meeting his gaze square on.

A satisfied grin spread across his mouth. He stood up, stepped closer, and reached out. His fingers brushed against my temple, smoothing a strand of hair behind my ear.

"I won't regret it," he murmured softly, full of easy confidence. "I know exactly what I want from this life."

I pulled my head back, dodging his touch. "Get your things out by noon."

He didn't argue. He packed two suitcases, whistled on his way out the door, and left his set of keys on the counter.

When the door slammed shut, I didn't shed a tear.

Instead, I took a shower, dressed in clean clothes, and arrived at the office thirty minutes early. I buried every waking thought under work. Over the following six weeks, I barely left my desk before nine at night. The planning division had called for proposals on the flagship market expansion project. It was the premier initiative of the quarter—the new CEO had personally asked about its progress twice during executive briefings.

Securing the lead role on that project meant instant visibility with the highest level of corporate leadership.

I poured every ounce of analysis, data modeling, and market research I had into forty-two dense, airtight slides.

On the day of the department presentation, the executive conference room was packed. Twenty team members sat around the mahogany table while department heads lined the back wall.

I sat near the middle, holding my black leather portfolio. I was fifth on the presentation roster.

"Next up," Director Morrison announced, adjusting his reading glasses. "Sloane Bennett. Let's see your quarterly proposal."

Sloane stood up from her chair, smoothing the lapels of a pristine white designer blazer. She cast a triumphant smirk around the room, picked up the presentation remote, and stepped up to the podium.

The projector flared to life against the wall.

*Omni-Channel Integration: Tier-One Regional Scalability.*

My stomach plummeted straight through the floorboards.

"Good morning, leadership team," Sloane began, her voice ringing with polished poise. "Today, I present our dynamic path toward capturing the mid-tier consumer base through an agile distribution shift."

She clicked to the second slide.

A complex, multi-tiered data flow chart appeared.

The statistical breakdowns. The exact target margins. The three-phase risk assessment framework.

Every single metric. Every bullet point. Every chart projection.

It was my work. Word for word.

A loud, piercing hum filled my ears, drowning out her voice.

My personal laptop.

I kept the final drafts stored on an encrypted local drive. Only one person had ever known that password, back when we shared an apartment and he borrowed my computer to format his monthly reports.

Ethan.

My head snapped toward the far corner of the room.

Ethan sat in the shadows near the whiteboard, a pen poised over a notepad. The moment my eyes slammed into him, his chin dropped. He stared intently at the blank paper in front of him, refusing to look up, his jaw set in rigid avoidance.

He gave it to her.

He stole my weeks of sleepless nights, my research, my intellectual property, and handed it over on a silver platter to guarantee his standing with the VP's niece.

Nails bit into the meat of my palms so hard I could feel the skin threatening to split. My vision darkened around the edges, heat surging behind my eyes before settling into an icy, suffocating fury.

"...which yields an estimated forty-percent increase in regional engagement across quarter four," Sloane finished smoothly, lowering the remote. She folded her hands in front of her suit, offering the room a radiant, confident bow.

Silence hung for two seconds before Director Morrison broke into enthusiastic applause.

"Brilliant," Morrison beamed, nodding vigorously as the rest of the room joined in. "Truly exceptional work, Sloane. The depth of the data is remarkable, and the execution strategy is thoroughly feasible. This is the caliber of thinking the executive suite wants to see."

Sloane basked in the praise, casting an arrogant, pitying glance across the table straight at me.

Morrison shuffled his papers, tapping his pen against his pad.

"Well, moving right along," he said, turning his head down the table. "Isla. You're up next. Where is your deck?"

The room went quiet, waiting for me to walk to the front.

I didn't reach for the remote.

I pushed back my chair, standing up. The leather portfolio in my hands snapped shut with a sharp, dry crack that echoed off the glass walls.

"Isla?" Morrison frowned.

I leveled my gaze directly at Sloane's smiling face, my tone steady, freezing the air in the room.

"The proposal Sloane Bennett just presented is mine," I said, every syllable clear and unforgiving. "She stole it."
