After My Ex Sent Me to Prison, He Destroyed the Evidence of My Innocence Chapter 1

The gray uniform smells like industrial detergent and someone else's sweat. I adjust the collar with my left hand as I stand near the service entrance of the Seattle Art Museum. Through the glass doors, I can see the chandeliers. They look like frozen fireworks.

My supervisor checks her clipboard. "Brooks, you're on restroom duty tonight. Second floor. Stay invisible."

I nod. Invisible is what I do best.

Inside, the gala is all champagne flutes and silk dresses. I keep my eyes down and push my cleaning cart toward the stairs. The compression glove on my right hand is black tonight. It matches the uniform. Small mercies.

I'm halfway up when I hear my name over the sound system.

"And now, we'd like to invite one of our foundation's aid recipients to the stage. Please welcome Aliana Brooks."

I freeze. My left hand grips the cart handle.

A woman in a headset appears beside me. She's smiling. "That's you, right? Come on, they're waiting."

I follow her because I don't have a choice. The stage lights are too bright. I squint. A woman in a white gown stands at the microphone. Her smile is perfect. Her hair is perfect. Everything about her is perfect.

"Aliana has overcome so much," she says into the microphone. "And tonight, we celebrate her resilience."

The crowd applauds. I stand there like a prop. Like a before-and-after photo come to life.

Then I see him.

He's at the VIP table, third from the stage. Dark suit. Same jaw. Same hands that used to trace my spine in the mornings when we'd fall asleep at our desks.

Garrett Wallace.

His eyes meet mine. I watch the recognition hit him like a fist. His gaze drops to my right hand. The compression glove. The way my fingers don't quite close all the way anymore.

The champagne glass slips from his hand. It shatters on the white tablecloth. Red wine spreads like blood.

No one else notices. They're still clapping.

The woman in the white gown—Mrs. Wallace, I realize—touches my shoulder and guides me offstage. "Thank you so much for being here," she says. Her perfume is expensive. Her grip is firm.

I nod and walk back to my cart. My heart is pounding. I can feel his eyes on my back.

I make it to the second-floor restroom and lock myself in a stall. I lean against the door and breathe. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. The way the prison therapist taught me.

Seven years. Seven years of teaching myself not to feel anything in the moment. Save it for later. Save it for when you're alone.

I adjust my glove. The scars underneath itch. They always itch.

When I come out, I scrub sinks that don't need scrubbing. I refill soap dispensers. I do my job.

The gala ends at eleven. I'm wiping down the mirrors when I hear footsteps in the hallway.

"Aliana."

His voice hasn't changed.

I meet his eyes in the mirror. He's standing in the doorway. His tie is loose. He looks like he's been running.

"Where have you been?" His voice cracks. "Seven years. Where were you?"

I turn around slowly. I lean against the sink. I look at him the way I used to look at evidence logs during discovery. Clinical. Detached.

"Prison," I say. "Four years in SeaTac Correctional. You know that. You put me there."

He flinches. "I didn't—"

"You handed the prosecutors fabricated IP theft documents," I continue. My voice is calm. Steady. "You testified that I'd stolen proprietary code. You watched them convict me. And when your business rivals paid a guard to hold my hand against a steel door in a prison stairwell until every bone shattered, you did nothing."

I lift my right hand. I peel back the glove slowly. The scars are white and raised. My fingers don't straighten. They haven't straightened in seven years.

"You did this," I say.

He's staring at my hand. His face is gray. "I didn't know they would—"

"You knew."

Silence.

"Garrett?" A woman's voice, bright and sharp. Paisley appears in the doorway. She loops her arm through his with the ease of long practice. She looks at me. Her smile doesn't reach her eyes.

"Oh," she says. "You're the aid recipient. How wonderful that you could join us tonight." She turns to Garrett. "Darling, the Chens are waiting at the table. We shouldn't keep them."

She steers him away. He looks back once. I don't move.

When they're gone, I pull the glove back on. I finish wiping the mirrors. I clock out at midnight.

Three days later, my bank account shows a wire transfer. Fifty thousand dollars. The memo line says "Medical Expenses."

I transfer it back the same day.

Two days after that, a driver knocks on my apartment door. He hands me an envelope. Inside is a letter on Wallace Corporation letterhead offering me a position as a "strategic consultant" at two hundred thousand a year.

I shred it.

The driver comes back the next week. This time I walk down to the car. I lean into the window. I can see the phone on the dashboard. The call is active.

"Tell your employer," I say clearly, "that his guilt is not my problem to manage. The next delivery will be met with a restraining order."

I go back upstairs. I sit in the dark. I adjust my glove.

I don't cry.
