Chapter 2

The cellar smelled like secrets, and like the man who followed me down.

The cold stone hit my feet first. Then the smell: damp earth, old wood, something floral that had died years ago. My father’s lantern swung, shadows lurching across walls that weren’t supposed to exist.

I stopped at the bottom.

No wine. No preserves. No ordinary lies.

The left wall was covered: papers, maps, handwriting in faded ink, all pinned and crossed and curling at the edges. In the center, carved into stone: a wolf mid-howl, and beneath it, words.

When the blood of the lost daughter wakes beneath the Hollow Moon…

I didn’t finish reading. Because beside the wall, on a low table, sat a photograph.

A woman. Auburn hair curling at her temples. My chin. My nose. Eyes the color of pale gold, my eyes, but older, sadder, looking at someone just out of frame.

Selene, age nineteen. One year before.

Before what?

I picked it up. My hands didn’t shake. That surprised me.

“She’s my mother,” I said.

“Yes,” my father said.

“She’s supposed to be dead.”

He didn’t answer.

I turned. “She’s not dead.”

He closed his eyes. “No.”

I sat on the bottom step. Not because my legs gave out, because if I stayed standing, I was going to break something.

He talked. I listened. The Hollow Howl. The Selene bloodline. A power older than shifting, the ability to reach into every wolf and rewrite their loyalty. A living key.

The Alpha took her twelve years ago to control it. He’s been waiting for me to wake up since before I was born.

And the man upstairs? The one with the amber eyes and the scar?

He’s been lying to his father for six years to keep me alive.

I stood up. Crossed to the wall. Ran my fingers over the carved letters. Cold. Real. My name was in stone.

“The man upstairs,” I said. “Kael.”

“Yes.”

“How long has he been at the boundary?”

“Six years.”

Six years. In the dark. Watching. Waiting. Choosing.

I went back up the stairs.

He was in the kitchen, standing by the window, watching the tree line. He turned when I came up. In the low firelight, I saw him properly for the first time.

Twenty-three, maybe twenty-four. Dark hair falling across his forehead. A scar along his jaw that I wanted to trace with my thumb. He was lean and still and watching me like I was the only thing in the room worth seeing.

On his right wrist, the mark. The same one burning on mine.

He looked at it. Then at me.

“You read it,” he said. The prophecy.

“Yes.”

A pause. “And?”

I didn’t sit down. I walked to him. Close. Closer than I should have.

“Six years,” I said. “You’ve been out there for six years.”

“Yes.”

“Your father sent you to spy on me.”

“Yes.”

“And you lied to him instead.”

He held my gaze. “Yes.”

“Why?”

He was quiet. Not avoiding, careful. Like the answer mattered.

“The first night,” he said. “You were fourteen. You came outside with a kitchen knife because you heard something in the woods. You stood at the edge of the clearing and you told the dark to come out and face you properly.”

I blinked. “I don’t remember that.”

“I do.” His voice dropped. “You were furious. Not afraid. You stood there for ten minutes.” He looked at his hands, then back at me. “I wrote my report. Said you were dormant. No signs of change.” A pause. “Then I came back the next night. And the night after that.”

“You gave up six years for a girl you’d never met.”

“I gave up six years for the right thing,” he said. “They’re not the same.”

The room was very quiet. The fire crackled. I could smell him from here: pine, woodsmoke, something darker underneath that made my stomach tighten.

I looked down at our wrists. At the marks, side by side.

“The Bonding Seal,” I said. “Explain it.”

He didn’t pretend not to know what I meant. “It appears when Fated Pairs come within range. When the bond recognizes itself.”

“Fated pairs.” My voice was flat.

“Yes.”

“I don’t believe in fate.”

“I know.” He said it like he’d known it for years. Like he’d been waiting for me to say it.

I looked at his wrist again. “How long have you had yours?”

A long pause.

“Six years,” he said quietly. “Since the first night.”

Since I was fourteen, with a kitchen knife.

The mark pulsed. Warm. Insistent. Smug.

I pressed my wrist against my thigh to make it stop. It didn’t stop.

“I’m not agreeing to anything,” I said.

“I’m not asking you to.”

“I have eighteen nights until the Blood Moon. A mother in a compound. Twenty-three other women. A prophecy with my name on it.” I gestured between us. “I don’t have room for this.”

His mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. Something more dangerous.

“Twenty-three women?” he said.

“Yes.”

“Merek didn’t tell you that.”

I frowned. “I just… knew it.”

We both looked at my wrist.

The mark pulsed again. Told you, it seemed to say.

Kael stepped closer. One step. Then another. Close enough that I had to tilt my chin up to keep his eyes.

“The Howl already knows things you don’t,” he said quietly. “It’s been awake longer than you have.”

“Then I need to learn to use it. Fast.” I held his gaze. “And I need you to understand something, this mark doesn’t make you in charge of me.”

He looked at me for a long moment. Those amber eyes. The firelight caught the scar on his jaw.

“Understood,” he said. Soft. Like he was promising something.

I should have stepped back. I didn’t.

He reached out, slow enough that I could have moved and touched my wrist. Not the mark. The skin beside it. His fingertips were warm. Calloused. They traced the inside of my forearm once, featherlight.

My breath caught.

His eyes dropped to my mouth.

“Come back at dawn,” I said. My voice didn’t sound like mine.

“I’ll be here,” he said.

Then he let go. I walked to the door. Paused with his hand on the latch.

“Aria.”

“What?”

He looked back at me. That almost-smile again. “You were fourteen years old with a kitchen knife, and you told the dark to face you properly.” A pause. “Whatever’s coming… it picked the wrong woman.”

He left.

I stood in the middle of the kitchen, heart slamming, wrist burning, thighs pressed together against an ache I refused to name.

I didn’t sleep.

I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. At the ceiling. At the ceiling. Anything but the warmth curling low in my belly.

The mark pulsed. Patient. Hungry.

I thought about eighteen nights. A mother I didn’t remember. Twenty-three women who needed me.

And a man who had stood in the dark for six years, watching over a girl he’d never spoken to, carrying a bond he never used as leverage.

I turned onto my side. Pressed my wrist to my chest.

Fine, I thought, to the mark, to the forest, to whatever was coming.

Let’s go.

A knock on the door. Not Kael, too heavy. My father’s voice, low and urgent from the hallway: “Aria. Don’t scream. But he’s back.”

The Alpha.

His voice came through the walls, not outside, inside, somehow, like the cottage itself was breathing him:

“I know you can hear me, daughter of Selene. I’m not here for you. Not tonight.”

A pause. Then:

“I’m here for my son.”

Standing in that hallway, I realized he was actually shopping for spare parts. "She is your wife, Ethan," Ben argued weakly. "You can't just harvest her like a crop." "She became my wife because she was useful," Ethan replied, his indifference cutting deeper than any scalpel. "Now, she can be useful for this." The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. The nausea I’d been feeling wasn't stress. I was pregnant. And those "vitamins" he fed me every morning? They weren't supplements.
