Chapter 3

The photograph had my face, and the man beside me had my mark.

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, handwriting I didn't recognize: Selene. Age nineteen. One year before.

"She's my mother," I said.

My father went silent. The kind of silence that fills a room like smoke.

I set the photograph down. Looked at him across the table.

"She's alive."

He exhaled. "Yes."

"Where."

"The Alpha's compound. Since you were six."

Six years old. Twelve years of lies.

"You kept her from me."

"I kept you safe."

I pressed my hands flat on the table. The wood was warm from the fire. My knuckles were white.

"Tell me everything. Now."

He talked for twenty minutes. The Hollow Howl. The bloodline. The living key. A power that rewrites loyalty in every wolf within range. The reason an Alpha had been planning around me since before I was born.

I didn't interrupt. I let each word land like a stone dropped into deep water.

When he finished, I stood up.

"Show me the rest."

The cellar was older than the cottage.

Stone walls covered in handwriting, maps, symbols. At the center, carved deep into the rock: a wolf mid-howl. Below it, words.

And Aria of the lost line will end what was or burn with it.

My name. In stone. Waiting for me.

I pressed my fingers to the letters. Cold. Real.

On a table nearby: seven journals with worn red covers. I opened the top one to the last entry. Her handwriting: open, looping, certain.

Aria is six today. She drew me a picture: a woman and a moon. If she finds this, I want her to know: The Hollow Howl is not a curse. It is a voice. Use it loudly.

I closed the journal. Held it against my chest.

"I'm taking all of these."

My father nodded.

"And tomorrow, you tell me everything else. Or I go to Kael instead."

He flinched. "Tomorrow."

I took the journals upstairs.

Kael came back at dawn exactly when I'd asked.

I was at the kitchen table, three journals open, tea long cold. He knocked twice, quietly, specifically, and I let him in.

He looked at the journals. At my face. Sat down across from me without a word.

That silence of his. It didn't ask. It just waited beside me.

"She knew," I said. "My mother. She knew what was coming."

"She's been planning since before you were born." His voice was careful. "My father is afraid of her. That tells you everything."

The Alpha. Afraid of a woman he'd locked away.

Good.

"I want to train today. The Howl. Now."

"You haven't slept."

"Seventeen nights until the Blood Moon." I stood. "Are you going to help me or not?"

He stood. That almost-smile. "There are rules."

"Fine."

"You follow them."

"Conditionally."

He looked at me. "You are exactly what the Howl would choose."

I opened the door. "Come on."

The forest at dawn was alive in a way I'd never felt.

Two deer, forty feet east. A crow in the pine. The slope of the ground before my feet found it. I stopped walking.

"I can feel the deer."

Kael stopped beside me. Close. "Yes."

"Is it always this loud?"

"You get used to it."

I looked at him. There was a story under that answer, years of learning to live with something too big for his body. I didn't have time for it yet.

"Show me how to use it."

It went badly.

Every time the Howl rose, I braced. The surge, the contraction, the slam. Three times. Four. Five.

By the sixth, Kael didn't say try again. He just waited.

"You're fighting it," he said.

"I'm not…

He tilted his head. Are you sure?

I thought about it. The brace. The slam.

"I'm fighting it."

"Yes."

"How do I stop?"

He stepped closer. Close enough that I had to tilt my chin up. His eyes dropped to my hands, shaking, both of them. He didn't comment.

"Feel where it is," he said quietly. "Don't push. Don't grab. Just find it. Like locating a sound in a dark room."

I closed my eyes. Found it immediately. It had always been right there.

"Got it."

"Now don't touch it. Just let it know you see it."

I let it know.

The Howl rose, not the crash, not the electric slam. Warmth. Slow. Enormous. Rising through my hands and chest like water finding its level. Vast. Calm. Mine.

"Oh," I breathed.

"Yes."

My eyes opened. He was watching my face. That intensity, like he was memorizing something.

"I've been treating it like a threat."

"You were told your whole life to fear this forest. The Howl is the forest." He paused. "You trained yourself to flinch from your own blood."

I looked at him. This man, who had figured out, alone at seventeen, that some things needed to be breathed with rather than against.

"How did you learn that?"

He looked at the trees. "I spent years trying to be what my father wanted." A pause. "Then I stopped. And then I could actually move."

Something in my chest went quiet.

I looked away first.

"Again."

Four hours later, I could hold it for sixty seconds.

Sixty seconds of the Howl are fully present, warm, controlled, mine. Kael stood at the edge of the clearing, arms crossed, letting me work. No commentary. Exactly what I needed.

On the walk back, the sun fully up, I felt it.

A presence. Edge of my range. Two hundred yards out. Moving parallel to us. Watching.

I didn't stop walking.

"Someone's in the trees. Nine o'clock."

"I know." Kael's voice was low. "I felt it five minutes ago."

"Who is it?"

His jaw set. "Not my father's men. They don't keep a distance. This is someone who knows exactly how close is too close."

I reached with the Howl carefully, not grabbing, just extending.

The presence stilled.

And then, faint, like a voice through a thick wall, something came back.

Not sound.

Warmth.

Recognition.

The specific feeling of someone who knew you before you knew yourself.

My breath caught. I stopped walking.

My hand found Kael's arm without thinking. His muscles tensed under my fingers.

"Kael."

"I know." Very quiet.

I stared at the trees. At the space where the presence was too far to see, perfectly within range to feel. Warm. Familiar. Impossible.

The presence moved. West. Deliberate. Gone in seconds.

I stood in the empty forest with my heart slamming, the Howl roaring in my chest, and Kael's hand coming up to cover mine where it gripped his arm.

His thumb brushed my knuckles. Once. Slow.

"That was my mother," I said. The words made no sense. They were completely true.

His hand tightened around mine.

"Yes."

Not, I think. Not maybe.

Just: yes.

I didn't pull my hand away. Neither did he. We stood there in the brightening woods, his thumb still tracing the bones of my fingers, the Howl humming between us like a held breath.

Then he spoke. Low. Rough.

"She's not supposed to be able to leave the compound."

I looked at him. At the scar on his jaw, the amber eyes that had watched me for six years.

"Then how…"

"I don't know." His grip tightened. "But if she's out, your mother is running out of time. And so are you."

The mark on my wrist burned.

Seventeen nights, it seemed to say.

Seventeen.
