Pregnant By My Husband In Disguise
Chapter 2
Chloe burst through the door of the penthouse, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She ran straight to the master bathroom-her bathroom, in her separate wing-and stared at her reflection. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with terror. On her neck, just below her jaw, was a faint, purplish mark. A kiss. A brand.
A guttural sound of disgust escaped her.
She turned the shower on, twisting the knob until the water was scalding hot. She stood under the spray, scrubbing at her skin until it was raw, trying to wash away his touch, his scent, the memory of his body against hers.
But the water couldn't wash away the fear.
As her mind cleared, a new, more practical terror took hold. A colder, more clinical dread.
Pregnancy. Disease.
Her hands trembled as she fumbled for her phone, wrapping a towel around herself. She sat on the edge of the cold marble tub, her teeth chattering.
"Most discreet women's health clinic NYC"
The search results blurred. She scrolled until she found one that sounded less like a hospital and more like a spa. Elysian Wellness. A members-only, high-end clinic promising absolute privacy.
She booked an emergency appointment for that afternoon, her finger hovering over the confirmation button for a long second before she pressed it.
The hours leading up to the appointment were a special kind of hell. She paced the length of her living room, the silky rug feeling like sandpaper under her bare feet. She took the escort's number from the nightstand where she'd thrown the note and blocked it. She couldn't bring herself to delete it. It felt like destroying evidence.
Finally, she couldn't bear the silence anymore. She called Carina.
"Hey," she said, her voice cracking on the single word.
"Chloe? What's wrong? You sound awful."
"I... I think I made a mistake," Chloe whispered, the words tasting like ash. "A really big mistake."
"What did you do?" Carina's voice sharpened with concern.
The doorman called to let her know her car was waiting. A private car service, not Alistair's. She had to maintain some semblance of her own life.
"I have to go," Chloe said, her voice thick with unshed tears. "I'll call you from the clinic."
In the back of the sleek black sedan, hidden behind oversized sunglasses and a silk scarf wrapped high around her neck to hide the mark, she finally confessed.
The signal was spotty as the car navigated through Manhattan traffic. "I'll call you back when I'm in the waiting room," she promised, her voice barely a whisper. "It's supposed to be completely private."
Elysian Wellness was as discreet as advertised. All hushed tones and minimalist decor. A polite receptionist guided her to a private elevator without even asking her name.
The elevator ascended silently. She pulled off her sunglasses, staring at the pale, haunted face reflected in the mirrored walls. She took a deep, shuddering breath.
She was shown to a small, luxurious private waiting room that looked more like a hotel lounge. As soon as the door closed, she redialed Carina's number.
This time, she told her everything. The bar, the whiskey, the stranger, the hotel. And the note.
"A male escort?" Carina gasped on the other end of the line. "Chloe, oh my God."
"What do I do?" Chloe's voice broke.
"Okay, listen to me," Carina said, her tone shifting from shock to damage control. "First, you get tested for everything. Everything. Second, and this is the most important thing, Alistair can never, ever find out. Do you hear me? You want that trust fund when this sham of a marriage is over, right? You can't afford a morals clause violation."
"I know," Chloe whispered, a fresh wave of panic rising.
A nurse knocked softly and entered, her smile gentle. It was time for the examination.
The process was a cold, clinical blur. Chloe felt detached from her own body, like a specimen under a microscope. A criminal awaiting sentencing.
After it was over, she was led back to her private room to wait. She picked up her phone to text Carina, to tell her how scared she was. The silence of the clinic was deafening.
Needing to move, to do something, she left the room and headed down the hall toward the restroom. As she turned a corner, she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure disappearing into another room. Tall, impeccably dressed. She blinked. It was probably just her frayed nerves playing tricks on her.
She decided to leave. She couldn't stand being there a second longer. She walked back to the private elevator bank and pressed the button.
The doors slid open with a soft chime.
A man stood inside, dressed in a sharp, tailored suit, looking down at his phone.
Chloe stepped in without a second thought, her mind already on the escape. She pressed the button for the ground floor.
Behind her, the man ended his call.
"Mrs. Sinclair," he said, his voice calm and professional. "Was the examination satisfactory?"
Chloe froze. Every muscle in her body went rigid.
That voice. It wasn't a doctor. It wasn't clinic staff.
It was Leo Hayes. Alistair's chief of staff. His shadow.
Before she could form a single word, before she could even turn around, the elevator stopped on another floor.
The doors slid open.
And Alistair Sinclair was standing there.
His gaze, a shade of blue so pale it was almost silver, bypassed Leo completely. It landed directly on her face, on the silk scarf at her neck.
His eyes were as cold and sharp as a surgeon's scalpel.
The blood in Chloe's veins turned to ice.
