Chapter 1

My mother-in-law, Maryam Smith, had a heart attack and was in a critical condition. However, my wife, Lily Smith, took the only available heart for her intern’s mother.

Jared Anderson’s mother did not have a serious heart condition. She did not need a heart transplant at all.

In the end, Maryam died on the operating table because she did not receive a heart transplant in time.

“I already tried my best to find another donated heart for your mother. It’s too bad that she was unlucky. She couldn’t even manage to make it through that short while.

“Even though she’s dead, Jared was still kind enough to offer to retrieve all her organs to be donated. That way, she can still contribute something good to the world.”

I was shocked by her shameless speech.

However, she was not aware that my mother was not the person she harmed with her abuse of power. The person she hurt was her mother!

Lily Smith threw a red plastic bag containing a pig heart at me.

“Jared and I carefully chose this pig heart. Since a heart transplant is useless now, you can cook it and bring it as an extra dish to her funeral. Treat it as a gift from us.”

Jared Anderson dragged the body bag containing the corpse from the hospital bed onto the floor, like it was a bag of trash.

“I recall that the cardiology department is short on hospital beds. She’s dead now, so she shouldn’t be occupying a bed. This will hinder other patients from receiving their treatments. Let’s bring it over for organ removal. If we wait for too long, the harvested organs may cease to be usable.”

At Jared’s words, fury rose within me. I grabbed his collar.

Lily grabbed a cup of water and threw it against my arm.

“Jared’s right. Some people are wasting oxygen when they’re alive. Why should they waste our medical resources when they’re dead? Donating her organs is probably the only useful thing she did in her whole life. What are you protesting about?”

I clutched my throbbing arm and stared at Lily like I was looking at a stranger.

My mother-in-law, Maryam Smith, was worried that Lily would be overly concerned if she found out that Maryam was seriously ill. So, Maryam hid her illness from Lily.

That’s why Lily thought my mother was the one who needed a heart transplant. Her true colors were as plain as day, thanks to this incident.

I did not know if I should feel happy for myself or feel sad for Maryam.

She had died because of her love for Lily.

It was absolutely ridiculous.

Jared let out an evil laugh. Then, he brought the janitor’s cleaning cart into the ward.

“Time is of the essence. Let’s use this cart to bring your mother over for organ removal.

“This box is a little too small. If we were to stuff your mother’s dead body in, we’d have to bend her limbs a little.”

I was disgusted by Jared’s viciousness. I yelled, “Lily! How can you let him disrespect the body like that? That’s heartless!”

To me, regardless of whose dead body it was, it should never be disrespected in such a way!

“Besides…”

Before I could finish speaking, Lily interrupted me without any hesitation.

“I’m already helping her contribute to the world by harvesting her organs. How is that heartless? I don’t want to waste another breath on you. Jared, stuff the dead body in and bring it over!”

Jared stepped on the legs of the dead body and snapped those bones in half.

Lily knew that I would try to stop them, so she shielded Jared.

When I pushed Lily aside, Jared had already broken both arms too.

He forcefully stuffed the mangled body into the cart.

He even said smugly, “Hunter, don’t worry. To ensure that the organs are not damaged, I did not break anything in the torso.”

Lily urged me impatiently, “Shouldn’t you be thanking Jared for treating your mother’s dead body this carefully? If it were up to me, she wouldn’t be getting such good treatment. She doesn’t deserve it, since she’s such an evil person!”

My heart ached when I saw Maryam’s mangled body.

“Lily! Aren’t you going to verify whose dead body it is?”

She would regret it when she saw that it was her own mother!

Lily snorted.

“Why would I look at it? I had more than enough of your mother’s stupid face when she was alive!”

She took out an organ removal agreement and said matter-of-factly, “Sign this. Your mother’s organs can give other people another chance at life. In a way, this is her legacy. If you truly love your mother, you should be more generous.”

It was hilarious coming from her, as she snatched away an available heart by misusing her power. “I won’t sign it!”

My mother’s name was written on the agreement. Why would I sign that?
