Chapter 2

All Candice did was blink and say with an aggrieved expression, "I didn't say anything. All I said was that you caught a minor case of the flu. You must have heard me wrong and misunderstood. Besides, we don't know each other. Why would I want to destroy your happiness? All I want is for Russell to be happy!"

I tried to get my mother-in-law and those relatives to bear witness for me, but Russell stopped me with indifference. "Stop making a scene, Annie! It was just a joke. Candice is our personal doctor, and if you continue making a fuss, you'll only embarrass us!"

All I could do was stare at his superior, whose expression had darkened, and a helpless-looking Russell with reddened eyes. In the end, I decided to take this all in stride for the sake of his dignity and future. However, I refused to do the same in my current life.

I pushed my mother-in-law away and slapped Candice so hard that she fell to the ground, looking at me in shock. Her screams grabbed everyone's attention and, just like in my past life, Russell led his superior quickly over to where we were.

Candice's eyes turned red as she quickly got up from the ground to jump into Russell's arms, but I took off the wedding veil from my head before she could do so and slammed it to the ground. "Russell Loft, if your wedding gift to me is a fake premarital health screening report, you can consider this marriage canceled!"

Russell looked at me in shock. "What are you talking about, Annie? What fake premarital health screening report?" He frowned while looking at Candice, but continued speaking nicely, "What's going on? Tell us what happened. Is this a misunderstanding? Just apologize if this was a mistake, but if this is Annie's fault… You don't need to worry. I'll make her apologize to you."

Candice's eyes filled with tears, but before she could say anything, I interrupted her with a cold laugh by saying to their superior, "Sir, I have no idea how your department trains doctors. Are they allowed to make jokes like this by publicly announcing their patient has some sort of disease? If this has been approved by your department or by Russell, I don't think I want to marry a man who disrespects me."

With that, I flung my bouquet to the ground and turned to leave.

"Annie!" Russell quickly caught up to me and grabbed my hand, looking anxious. "I had no idea she would play such a joke on you. She… She's just being mischievous and doesn't know when to hold back. I apologize on her behalf, but you can't just say something so irresponsible without thinking and walk away from this wedding! You know that two department superiors are here today to congratulate us, and if you decide to make a fuss at a moment like this, it would…"

I sneered inwardly. Russell was the youngest captain in his department, and if things worked out for him this year, he would get a promotion. Being happily married and acting loving to his wife would help him with the promotion, and even if Candice was the woman he truly loved, he would never allow her to destroy his image in front of his superiors.

Back in my past life, I loved Russell and could not bear to see him in this dilemma, which was why I tolerated Candice's behavior, but all it left for me in this life was hate. I no longer felt guilty about using his weakness to take revenge for my past life.

I turned coldly to Russell and said, "Fine. I'll continue with the wedding, but I need to see how sincere you are about it." I looked straight at Candice and sounded upset while I spoke, "Weddings are supposed to be a happy occasion, but she claimed that I contracted dirty diseases on my happy day. That's the same as wishing someone else bad luck. Even my enemy wouldn't do something horrible like this.
