My Husband Left Me to Die for His First Love — So I Gave His Rival My Heart Chapter 1

I had a gift hidden in my purse for our sixth wedding anniversary when the hotel alarms began to scream. Smoke choked the ballroom. I was halfway to the exit when someone shouted that Sienna was trapped upstairs. Grant, my husband, didn’t hesitate. I followed him into the flames, only to watch him carry her shivering body toward the last standing staircase. When the structure started to groan, there was only time for one more person to cross. He handed her over, turned to me, and said the words that finally broke my heart. "You can make it. You're stronger than she is." Then, the stairs collapsed. I woke up in a hospital bed with twelve stitches and a text from him saying he was staying with Sienna because she was traumatized. I stared at the screen, finally realizing I wasn't just independent—I was disposable. I deleted his number, pulled the IV out of my arm, and walked out the door.

Black smoke choked the air, turning the grand dining room of The Grandview into a suffocating furnace. Alarms blared overhead, shrill and deafening against the roar of flames racing up the velvet drapes.

Tonight was supposed to be their sixth wedding anniversary.

Instead, Elise was trapped behind a collapsed section of the heavy oak staircase, heat blistering her skin through the silk of her evening gown. Coughing violently, she pressed a napkin to her mouth and shoved at the splintered beam pinning her leg.

"Grant!" she screamed, her throat tearing raw. "Grant, help me!"

Through the swirling haze, she saw him. Grant was coughing, soot smudging his tailored jawline, but he was on his feet. He looked toward her, his dark eyes wide with panic.

Then a woman’s sob cut through the noise.

"Grant! Please, I can’t breathe!"

Sienna had tumbled onto the polished marble floor near the exit archway, clutching her chest, gasping in hyperventilation. She hadn't even been supposed to be here tonight. She had simply "bumped" into them in the lobby before dinner, frail and wide-eyed, and somehow Grant had invited her to share their table.

Now, Grant didn't hesitate.

He didn't take a single step toward Elise. He lunged across the burning room toward Sienna, dropping to one knee and sweeping the smaller woman into his arms.

"Grant!" Elise’s voice cracked in utter disbelief. "I'm pinned! I can't move!"

Grant hoisted Sienna against his chest. He turned his head toward Elise, his expression a tight, frantic mask.

"You can make it," Grant shouted over the roar of collapsing timber. "You’re stronger than she is!"

The words struck Elise harder than the falling beam ever had.

"Grant, wait—"

He didn't wait. He turned his back on his wife and sprinted through the smoking exit doors, carrying his first love out into the fresh night air.

Elise stared at the empty doorway, stunned. The roar of the fire seemed to fade into a hollow ringing in her ears.

*You're stronger than she is.*

Six years. Six years of building his home, running his foundation, managing his crises, and swallowing every ounce of her own pain so he could climb his corporate ladder unburdened. And this was the price of being strong: when the world burned, she was the one left to burn with it.

The heat pressed down like a physical weight. Another section of the ceiling groaned, showering sparks across her bare shoulders. She pulled violently at her trapped ankle, crying out as skin tore against jagged wood, but the heavy oak didn't budge.

Her lungs screamed for oxygen. The black smoke descended, thick and poisonous, coating her throat like wet ash.

Her vision doubled. Her arms gave out, and she sank onto the blistering floorboards.

*So this is how it ends.*

Through the veil of darkness creeping over her eyes, the crash of breaking glass echoed through the hall. Heavy, steady footsteps cut through the inferno, utterly devoid of panic.

A tall figure emerged from the crimson glow. Broad shoulders, sharp features carved in shadows, an aura of absolute authority.

Roman Vance.

Grant’s fiercest rival in the city. The man Grant spent late nights plotting to destroy in boardrooms.

Roman took in the scene in half a second, his slate-gray eyes locking onto her slumped form. He shed his wool overcoat in one fluid motion, dropped beside her, and gripped the burning timber pinning her leg.

With a low, guttural grunt, veins bulging along his forearms, Roman shoved the massive beam aside as if it were kindling.

"Stay with me," Roman said, his voice deep, rough, and commanding against the crackle of fire.

He wrapped his heavy coat securely around her shoulders and scooped her into his arms. Elise felt the solid thump of his heartbeat against her cheek, the scent of expensive cedar and smoke replacing the suffocating air.

"Roman..." she wheezed, her eyelids fluttering shut.

"Don't talk," he ordered, pulling her tight against his chest as he surged toward the shattered terrace doors. "I've got you."

Then everything went black.

***

The steady beep of a heart monitor pulled Elise back to consciousness.

She blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights of a hospital room. An oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose, feeding cool, sweet air into her raw lungs. Her throat felt as though it had been scraped with broken glass, and her right ankle was heavily wrapped in bandages.

She was alive.

The door clicked open, and a young nurse stepped inside holding a chart. She offered Elise a warm, relieved smile.

"You’re finally awake, Mrs. Sterling," the nurse said, checking the IV line connected to Elise’s hand. "You gave us quite a scare. Carbon monoxide levels were dangerous, but you’re stable now."

Elise swallowed, the friction burning all the way down. "My... my husband?"

The nurse’s expression flickered, an awkward hesitation tightening her smile.

"Mr. Sterling is... on this floor," the nurse said carefully. "He’s been down in Room 314 since you both arrived."

Elise stared at her. "Room 314?"

"Yes," the nurse murmured, looking down at her clipboard. "A Miss Campbell was admitted for a severe panic attack. Mr. Sterling has been by her bedside making sure she calms down."

A cold numbness spread from Elise’s chest straight down to her fingertips.

Sienna had a panic attack.

Elise had nearly burned to death under a collapsing roof, her lungs blackened with soot, and Grant had spent the entire night two doors down, holding the hand of a woman who didn't have a single scratch on her skin.

"Your phone was in your coat pocket," the nurse added softly, placing Elise’s soot-streaked purse on the bedside rolling table. "It went off about an hour ago."

Elise picked up the phone with trembling fingers. The screen lit up.

There were no missed calls from Grant. Only a single text message sent two hours earlier.

*I knew you'd make it out. You’ve always been tough like that. Sienna’s anxiety flared up severely, and the doctors want her monitored overnight, so I'm staying with her to make sure she doesn't crash. Rest up. We’ll talk when we get home.*

Elise read the words once. Then twice.

In the past, she would have typed back: *I understand. Take care of her. I’m fine.*

She had spent six years being the convenient wife. The capable wife. The woman who never cried, never complained, and never demanded Grant’s time when someone else needed his comfort. She had convinced herself that his neglect was just proof of his trust in her resilience.

How pathetically blind she had been.

Grant didn't trust her strength. He simply used it as an excuse to abandon her whenever Sienna looked like she might break.

A single tear spilled over her eyelashes, hot against her pale cheek, before she wiped it away with the back of her bruised hand. The ache in her chest wasn't sorrow anymore. It was cold, sharp, and final.

Something inside her had died in that restaurant fire, right alongside the six years she had wasted on him.

"Mrs. Sterling?" the nurse asked gently. "Do you want me to let him know you're awake?"

"No," Elise said. Her voice was scratchy, but completely steady.

She lowered the phone. On the bedside tray, right next to the water pitcher, rested a sleek, matte-black business card with embossed silver lettering.

*Roman Vance. CEO, Vance Capital.*

"The man who brought you in left that," the nurse explained, noticing her gaze. "He stayed until you came out of the trauma bay. He paid for the private room upfront and told us to call his personal line if you needed anything at all."

Elise picked up the card. The heavy cardstock felt cool against her burned fingers.

Roman had carried her out of the flames while Grant had run away.

She looked up at the nurse, her eyes clear, dry, and resolved.

"Can you do something for me?" Elise asked.

"Of course."

"Remove Grant Sterling from my emergency contact list," Elise said, her tone devoid of hesitation. "And tell security that under no circumstances is he permitted into this room."

The nurse blinked in surprise, then nodded slowly. "Consider it done."

Elise looked back down at the card in her hand, her thumb tracing the crisp silver letters of Roman Vance’s name.

The fire was out, but the ashes were still warm—and she was done being the woman who burned in silence.
