Chapter 3

The night before the banquet, I was alone in the preparation room when Mia walked in.

She didn't knock. Just pushed the door open and smiled like we were old friends meeting for coffee.

"Aria," she said warmly. "I wanted to check in before tomorrow."

I was folding linens for the banquet tables. Busy work. The kind of Luna duties Nicholas had been assigning me since he stripped my tracker rank. I kept folding.

Mia moved closer. Her scent was floral—roses, maybe, with something sharper underneath. Artificial. Like perfume covering sweat.

"I know tomorrow might feel awkward," she continued. Her voice was soft. Reasonable. "But I want you to know it'll be quick and painless. Just a formality. After that, we can move forward as allies."

Her hand went to the base of her throat. Fingers resting there. Light pressure.

Tell.

I'd logged it in year one. Mia touched her throat when she lied. Always the same spot. Always the same gentle pressure, like she was checking her own pulse.

I looked at her hand. Didn't speak.

Mia's smile thinned. The warmth in her voice dropped away like a costume she'd gotten tired of wearing.

"You should be grateful," she said flatly. "Someone with real instincts is taking the Court position. Your wolf has always been too reactive for royal politics."

I set down the linen I'd been folding. My hands were steady. I met her eyes.

"Is there anything else?" I asked. My voice was calm. Tracker's report tone.

Mia's jaw tightened. She held my gaze for three seconds. Then she turned and walked out.

I waited until her footsteps faded down the corridor. Then I pulled the notebook from my boot and added a new entry.

*MH — blade callus, right hand, index finger. Not a political operative. Trained.*

I'd noticed it when her hand went to her throat. A small ridge of thickened skin on her index finger. The kind you got from gripping a blade repeatedly. Training callus. Combat, not ceremonial.

Mia wasn't just a rival. She was a weapon.

I tied the notebook closed and slid it back into my boot.

---

The banquet hall was full.

Every ranked member of Shadowveil attended. The inner circle sat at the high table with Nicholas. Mia had been given a seat of honor beside Ethan. The rest of the pack filled the long tables that stretched the length of the hall. Torches burned in iron sconces along the walls. The air smelled like roasted meat and wood smoke.

I descended the stone steps to the center of the hall. My boots were quiet on the floor. The room went silent.

Nicholas watched from the high table. His dark cedar scent was strong tonight. Confident. Satisfied.

Mia stood when I reached her. She wore a formal gown—deep blue, expensive fabric. Her hand went to her throat briefly, then dropped.

I knelt.

The stone was cold through my dress. My knees found the floor and I kept my spine straight. I looked up at Mia's face and recited the statement Nicholas had prepared. Word for word.

"I thank you, Mia Hawkins, for accepting the burden of the Lycan Court position. I acknowledge your suitability for the post and your service to the Shadowveil Pack."

My voice was flat. Loud enough to carry. Every syllable clear.

Mia received it with a gesture of gracious reluctance. She touched her throat again—brief, reflexive—and smiled down at me.

"Thank you, Luna," she said softly. "I accept this responsibility with humility."

The hall remained silent. No one moved.

I rose. Turned. Walked back to my seat beside Nicholas at the high table.

He leaned close as I sat. His breath was warm against my ear. "Well done," he murmured.

I didn't look at him. I picked up my fork and began eating.

Beneath the table, my hand closed around the notebook in my boot. I was cataloguing. Every face in the hall. Every silence. Every pack member who watched their Luna kneel and straightened their cuffs afterward.

Marcus Hale, my old trainer, stared at his plate. Ethan's mouth curved slightly. The junior wolves near the back watched with wide eyes, learning what obedience looked like in Shadowveil.

My wolf was quiet. Recording.

In a side room off the main hall, Brock Romero sat in front of the security monitors. I didn't know he was there. I didn't know he was watching. But later—much later—I would learn that he recorded the timestamp of my kneeling down to the second.

8:32:17 PM.

The moment he started counting his own silence.

---

Nicholas made a mistake after the banquet.

He returned my access to the healer's den. He reduced his surveillance of the Alpha quarters. He stopped checking the mate bond as frequently.

He thought I'd surrendered. That the public kneeling had broken something essential.

He was wrong.

I went to the healer's den the next morning. Catherine was sleeping. Willow was at her workbench, grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle. She looked up when I entered. Her face was careful. Neutral.

I didn't ask about my mother's antidote schedule. I didn't ask about Nicholas's authorization signatures.

I asked one question.

"If the Alpha's authorization were removed from the antidote protocol," I said quietly, "what would you do?"

Willow's hands stilled. The pestle stopped moving. She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she answered. Barely audible.

"I would administer the correct dose on the standing medical schedule. Without question."

I nodded. "Thank you."

I didn't ask her to act. I didn't ask her to disobey Nicholas. I was building a record of what Willow would do freely, versus what she had been ordered to do.

The distinction would matter later. For testimony.

I left the healer's den and walked back to the Alpha quarters. The corridor was empty. Cold.

My wolf stirred. Not howling. Not fighting.

Waiting.

The notebook in my boot was getting full. Dates. Signatures. Calluses. Timestamps. Faces.

I was building something Nicholas couldn't see yet.

A case. A record. A weapon made of truth.

And when the time came—when every piece was in place—I would detonate it.
