Chapter 4

Three days after I knelt before Mia in the banquet hall, she walked into the pack house like she owned it.

I was in the corridor outside the Alpha quarters, carrying a stack of Nicholas's correspondence to file. Busy work. Luna duties. The kind of tasks designed to keep me visible and powerless at the same time.

Mia appeared at the end of the hall. No knock. No warning. She wore traveling clothes—dark jeans, a fitted jacket, boots built for distance. The Lycan Court documents were tucked under her arm in a leather portfolio bearing the Shadowveil crest.

She saw me and smiled. Not the warm performance from the banquet. Something colder.

"Aria," she said. Her voice was flat. Conversational. "I'm collecting the final transfer papers. Leaving for New York tomorrow."

I kept walking toward the Alpha quarters. She stepped into my path.

"You should know," Mia continued, "Nicholas never wanted a mate who outshone him. That's not cruelty. That's structural reality. The Lycan Court would have used you and discarded you. I'm doing you a favor."

I stopped. Set the correspondence on the hall table. Looked at her.

"Move," I said quietly.

Mia's hand went to her throat. The tell. Then she reached out—slow, deliberate—and touched the mate mark on my neck. Her fingers pressed against the raised scar where Nicholas had bitten me three years ago.

Intimate. Violating. Designed to provoke.

My wolf detonated.

I didn't think. I moved. Three years of Lead Tracker combat training, months of suppressed instinct, all of it coiling into a single response. I struck fast—grabbed Mia's jacket, spun her, slammed her against the corridor wall. My forearm went across her throat. Her feet left the floor.

Her eyes went wide. Shocked. She clawed at my arm but I was trained for this and she wasn't. She was a political operative who had never taken a real hit.

I had her. The upper hand. The woman who helped build the cage pinned where she couldn't perform or deflect or smile.

For one perfect moment, I had everything.

Then Nicholas's voice cut through the hall. Two words. Alpha tone. Absolute.

"Don't move."

My body locked.

Every muscle seized. The compulsion hit like a physical blow—the mate bond tightening, the Alpha authority overriding my wolf's instinct, my own will dissolving under the biological command. I couldn't shift. Couldn't speak. Couldn't even lower my arm.

I could only stand frozen, forearm still extended, while Mia dropped to the floor.

She gasped. Coughed. Her hand went to her throat where my arm had been.

Then she looked past me. At Nicholas. Standing in the doorway at the end of the corridor.

He didn't move. Didn't speak again. Just watched.

Mia straightened slowly. Her breathing evened out. She reached into her jacket—not frantically, not in panic. Deliberately. Like she'd been waiting for this.

She pulled out a blade.

Silver. Small. The edge gleamed in the torchlight. I could smell the wolfsbane from three feet away—bitter, poisonous, the scent that made every wolf's instinct scream *run*.

She stepped close. I couldn't move. The Alpha-tone command held me like iron chains.

Mia pressed the blade against my throat. Just below my jaw. The silver burned on contact. She dragged it slowly—ear to collarbone—carving a deep ridged line that felt like fire and ice at the same time.

I couldn't scream. Couldn't pull away. The compulsion kept me still.

Blood ran hot down my neck, soaking into my collar. But worse than the pain was what happened inside.

My wolf screamed. A sound like tearing metal. Like something essential breaking apart. The room where she lived—the space in my consciousness where her voice had always been—went silent.

Empty.

The mind-link dissolved. The shift reflex vanished. I reached for my wolf and found nothing.

Mia stepped back. She wiped the blade on her sleeve, casual, like she'd just cleaned a kitchen knife. Then she looked at Nicholas.

He was still standing in the doorway. He hadn't moved. Hadn't intervened.

His face was blank. Satisfied. Like he was watching a problem solve itself.

Mia slid the blade back into her jacket. Picked up her leather portfolio from where she'd dropped it. Walked past me without another word.

Her footsteps echoed down the corridor. Then the front door opened and closed.

The Alpha-tone command faded. The compulsion released. I could move again.

I pressed my hand to my throat. Blood. Hot and slick. The wound was deep. The wolfsbane was already in my bloodstream—I could feel it spreading, cold and wrong, through my veins.

I reached for my wolf again. Tried to mind-link. Tried to shift.

Nothing.

Silence.

I looked down the corridor at Nicholas. He was still standing there. Watching me. His dark cedar scent filled the hall.

He didn't apologize. Didn't move toward me. Didn't call for the healer.

He just looked at me like he was confirming something.

I turned. Walked past him into the Alpha quarters. My legs were shaking but I kept my spine straight. I didn't run. I didn't cry.

I walked.

Behind me, Nicholas's footsteps moved away. Down the hall. Toward his office.

I made it to the bathroom before my knees gave out. I collapsed against the tile floor, hand still pressed to my throat. Blood seeped between my fingers.

I reached for my wolf one more time.

Silence.

She was gone.

In the security room three floors below, Brock Romero sat in front of the monitors. He'd watched the whole thing. The fight. The blade. The blood.

He looked at the timestamp: 11:47:23 PM.

He did not move.

He would carry that timestamp for the rest of his life.
