My Mate Used My Body to Keep Her Alive Chapter 1

The third transfer request arrived with breakfast.

I was still wearing sweat-damp pajamas from another night of fever when Vanessa's private nurse placed a clipboard beside my cold toast.

THIRD MATE TRANSFER: PRE-CHECK.

The signature line already had my name printed beneath it.

It had been three days since my second transfer.

I pushed the clipboard away.

"Who scheduled my body before asking whether I was willing?"

The nurse tapped her pen against the mahogany table. "The Alpha's office. Vanessa's Moon Poison levels spiked again overnight. They want you prepped before noon."

Nine days earlier, my fever had climbed so high my wolf could barely reach me. Damon spent most of those nights in the healing wing beside Vanessa while I shook through the aftereffects alone upstairs.

Four years ago, at this same table, he had pressed the silver key to the Alpha House into my nineteen-year-old palm and told every elder who doubted me that no one would ever make his mate prove she deserved her place.

Now his staff delivered medical orders as if my consent were an administrative detail.

"Take it back," I said. "I am not signing."

"Alpha Damon expects the pre-check completed."

"Then Alpha Damon can learn the difference between scheduling and consent."

Footsteps pounded down the hall.

Noah burst into the dining room carrying a green camping lantern almost as big as his torso.

Our seven-year-old adopted son grinned as he set it on the table.

"Vanessa bought it! She said when she gets better, she'll take me to Moon Lake for the meteor shower."

I straightened his crooked jacket collar. "Moon Lake is a long drive."

"I know. Vanessa said you can stay home and rest because you're always tired anyway."

The nurse looked down.

A wave of nausea rolled through me.

I stood too quickly and made it to the first-floor bathroom just before I gagged over the sink.

Cold water ran over my wrists while Noah kept talking in the hallway about wolf legends, campfire food, and how Vanessa could ride faster than the border scouts.

I had raised him since he was three.

During his first shift fever, I had slept on the healing-room floor for three nights because he panicked whenever I moved away from the bed. When he woke, he had called me Mom for the first time.

Now the lantern in his hands felt like a ticket to a life in which I was the tired woman left at home.

I looked at the calendar beside the mirror.

Counted backward.

Then counted again.

The nausea stopped feeling random.

I left the house without waiting for Damon.

Dr. Iris Hale locked her clinic office after the exam.

She did not smile when she sat across from me.

"You're pregnant," she said. "A little over seven weeks."

She handed me the sonogram.

A tiny pale shape floated in the dark center of the image.

My throat tightened.

"And?"

"And you still have Moon Poison residue from the first two transfers. Your liver markers are elevated. Your wolf's recovery response is slower than it was after the first procedure."

I gripped the sonogram.

"What happens if I transfer again?"

"The toxin can cross the magical exchange through your mate bond. The fetus would be exposed. The sedation and bond suppression create additional risk. I am issuing a medical ban on a third transfer."

Relief hit so hard I almost laughed.

Not because I needed a doctor's permission to say no.

Because for once, there would be a line Damon could not pretend was merely my fear.

"Put it in my official chart."

"Already drafting it."

"And lock my schedule. No appointments from the Alpha office unless I confirm them myself."

Iris nodded. "Done."

"Is Vanessa dying today?"

"She's worse, but not at the point where a transfer is the only immediate option. Damon needs to let us reassess her treatment instead of using you as a permanent filter."

I folded the sonogram and placed it inside my coat.

Before I left, Iris pulled up the records from my first two transfers. The first had taken less than an hour and left me weak for a day. The second had ended with a fever of 104, three nights of tremors, and a forty-eight-hour period when I could not hear my wolf clearly.

"This is the pattern Damon keeps ignoring," she said. "Your body is not returning to baseline between procedures. A third exposure now would not start from zero."

I touched the edge of the ultrasound in my pocket. "Can the Alpha office override your ban?"

"Not legally without an emergency declaration. But Silverpine still gives the Alpha broad medical authority over his household. That is why I locked your chart and added a direct-consent requirement. If anyone tries to change it, I will see the audit trail."

For the first time, the danger had a shape I could name: not only poison, but a system built to assume Damon's judgment would always protect me.

When I returned to the Alpha House, Damon stood in his study.

The unsigned pre-check form sat on his desk.

His communication stone pulsed red beside it with an emergency call from Vanessa's room.

Dark circles bruised his eyes.

I placed the sonogram in front of him.

He stared at it.

The color drained from his face.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his gaze lifted to mine.

"How long can Vanessa hold out?"

The question destroyed something quietly.

Not because Vanessa did not matter.

Because our child had existed in his hands for less than a minute before he measured it against her survival.

"Iris banned another transfer."

Damon looked at the medical form.

"A ban can be reassessed if the situation becomes critical."

I picked up the paper and tore it in half.

The pieces drifted onto his polished floor.

"My answer cannot."

His jaw tightened.

The communication stone flashed faster.

"She may not make it through the night."

"Then find another treatment."

Damon came around the desk.

He caught my wrist before I could step away.

His grip was not hard enough to bruise, but it was hard enough to stop me.

"Aria."

I looked at his fingers around my skin.

He followed my gaze and released me.

"You survived the first two."

"I am pregnant now."

"I know."

"Do you?"

His eyes moved to the ultrasound again.

The red light from the communication stone pulsed across the image.

"Save her one last time," he said.

I folded my arms over my stomach.

"No."
