Chapter 4

Ryan called the strategy meeting on a Thursday morning.

I heard about it the way I heard about everything now — through channels that no longer included me directly. A message forwarded from the Gamma's office. A calendar notification that arrived twenty minutes after the ranked wolves had already assembled in the conference room.

I walked in last. Took my seat at the far end of the table. The chair that used to be mine — directly at Ryan's right hand — was occupied by Dennis. He did not look at me when I entered. His jaw was tight on the left side.

Ryan stood at the head of the table with a territorial map projected on the wall behind him. Silvercrest's boundary markers glowed in silver. Ironridge's in grey. And to the north, a massive swath of unclaimed land stretched across three counties like an open invitation.

"Gentlemen," Ryan said. His voice carried that smooth Alpha confidence I used to mistake for devotion. "And Luna." He added my title half a second too late, like an afterthought. "We have an opportunity."

He gestured toward the northern territories. "Khloe and I have been discussing a joint expansion. Unclaimed land. No pack governance. No enforcement infrastructure. It's been sitting there for decades because no one had the vision or the alliance strength to take it."

He paused. Let the silence build. Let the ranked wolves lean forward in their seats.

"We do."

The Gamma — a broad-shouldered wolf named Carter who had never once questioned an Alpha command in his life — nodded slowly. "How much land are we talking about?"

"Fifteen hundred square miles." Ryan's eyes gleamed. "Enough to double Ironridge's territorial footprint. Enough to make us the dominant pack in the region."

I watched him. Memorized the way his pupils dilated when he said the word dominant. Cataloged the scent of ambition rolling off him in waves — sharper than usual, hungrier, the kind of appetite that makes a wolf stop thinking about consequences.

He was intoxicated by it.

Perfect.

I raised my hand. Waited for him to acknowledge me.

He blinked. Like he had forgotten I was present. "Yes, Peyton?"

"Three questions," I said. My voice was calm. Professional. The voice of a strategist doing her job. "First — what enforcement infrastructure exists in the unclaimed zones currently?"

Ryan frowned. "None. That's the point. It is unclaimed."

"Second question." I leaned forward slightly. "If there is no pack governance, how do we establish territorial authority without triggering jurisdictional conflicts with neighboring packs who might also view the land as available?"

Ryan's frown deepened. He glanced at Dennis. Dennis said nothing.

"Third question." I kept my tone even. Helpful. "Lycan law prohibits direct pack intervention in unclaimed territories without formal council approval. The application process typically takes eighteen months. Are we planning to wait, or is there an alternative enforcement model you are considering?"

Silence dropped across the table.

Ryan stared at me. I could see the gears turning behind his eyes. He had relied on my strategic mind for two years. He had never once questioned whether I was pointing him toward a solution or a trap.

He did not question it now.

"We will handle enforcement," he said slowly. "Khloe and I have discussed... alternative models."

"Rogue mercenaries," I said. Not a question. A statement. I pulled a folder from my bag and slid it across the table toward him. "I took the liberty of compiling data on historical precedents. Packs that have used non-affiliated enforcement in contested zones. Success rates. Operational costs. Legal risk assessments."

Ryan picked up the folder. Flipped it open. His eyes scanned the first page.

I had spent three weeks building that document. Every word was true. Every data point was accurate. Every conclusion led him exactly where I needed him to go.

"This is good work, Peyton," he said. He sounded surprised.

I smiled. Thin and polite. "I am still Luna. It is still my job."

For now.

---

Over the next three weeks, I became indispensable again.

Not in the way I had been before — not as Ryan's mate, not as the woman he pretended to love in front of the pack. But as the strategist he could not function without. I fed his expansion ambitions with surgical precision. I identified the northern territories that were most strategically valuable and most impossible to secure through legal channels. I presented detailed reports framing these lands as the linchpins of Ironridge's future dominance.

I made it look easy.

I made it look inevitable.

And when Ryan asked — casually, over coffee in his office one morning — how to enforce control in territories where pack law prohibited direct intervention, I suggested, offhandedly and with supporting documentation, that rogue mercenaries had historically been effective in such situations.

"Packless wolves," I said. "No formal allegiance. No jurisdictional conflicts. You pay them per contract. They enforce your borders. And if anything goes wrong, they are rogues. Not pack members. Legally, you are insulated."

Ryan leaned back in his chair. His eyes narrowed. "That is a Lycan law violation."

"Only if you are caught," I said. I slid another folder across his desk. "And only if the enforcers can prove intent. Rogue hiring is a grey area. The data suggests that most packs who use this model operate for years without detection."

He opened the folder. Read the first page. Then the second.

"How do you know all this?" he asked.

I met his eyes. Kept my face smooth. "I am a strategist, Ryan. It is what I do."

He nodded slowly. Closed the folder. Picked up his phone.

Two days later, he hired his first rogue mercenary.

I documented the transaction. Photographed the contract. Color-coded the file.

Red.

---

Ryan tried to maintain appearances.

At pack meetings, he still sat in the Alpha seat with his mating collar visible. He still projected the image of a devoted leader managing a complex political landscape. But the cracks were showing.

He no longer included me in summit preparations. He had begun scent-marking the Alpha seat before every meeting — a performative territorial display that I recognized immediately as anxiety, not confidence. He was a wolf who knew, on some level he would not admit, that the ground beneath him was shifting.

At one such meeting, I sat in my usual chair at the far end of the table. The ranked wolves filed in. Dennis took his seat at Ryan's right hand.

I caught his gaze across the room.

His jaw was tight on the left side. His eyes held mine for half a second longer than necessary. Then he looked away.

I filed it away. Stress response. Pack tensions. Nothing more.

I did not yet know what it meant.

I returned my attention to Ryan. Watched him scent-mark the chair. Watched him smooth his collar. Watched him smile at the assembled wolves like a man who believed he was still in control.

I opened my notebook. I made a note.

And I kept working.
