Chapter 1

Ryan came home just past midnight.

I heard the front door of the Ironridge pack house before I heard his boots — that soft click of the deadbolt he never bothered to muffle. Two years of listening for that sound had trained my ears the way a warrior trains for a whistle. I set my pen down on the territory map I'd been marking and stood.

"Peyton." He said my name the way an Alpha says a title. Warm on the surface. Nothing underneath.

I crossed the living room to greet him. He shrugged out of his leather jacket and tossed it across the back of the chair by the fireplace — the same chair, the same lazy toss, the same half-smile he gave me when he wanted me to stop asking about the summit.

I stepped in for a kiss.

And it hit me.

Jasmine. Amber. Rich, warm, and feminine, wrapped around the collar of the jacket like a woman had leaned into him for a long, long moment. The kind of scent that clung because it had been pressed in on purpose.

My wolf went rigid inside my chest. Not a growl. Not a snarl. Just — still. The way a hunter goes still when the prey she is stalking suddenly turns and looks straight at her.

My mating mark throbbed. A dull, nauseating pulse under the skin of my neck that I had never felt before in two years of wearing it.

"Long night," Ryan murmured against my hair. "I need a shower."

"Go," I said. My voice came out even. I was almost proud of it. "I'll bring you water."

He kissed my temple and disappeared down the hall. The pipes groaned to life. Steam started curling under the bathroom door.

I walked back to the chair and pressed my palm flat against the leather.

Collar. Chest. Right sleeve at the bicep. The scent was densest where a woman would rest her cheek, her mouth, her hand. I closed my eyes and mapped it the way I mapped everything — coordinates, concentration, contact points.

A jasmine-and-amber woman had held on to my mate for a long time tonight.

I did not cry. I did not move. I stood in my own kitchen with my hand on his jacket and let the ache in my mark tell me, quietly and clearly, what I had refused to hear for months.

---

The next morning, Ryan led warriors' training in the south field at seven sharp. I watched him from the porch until the last delta cleared the tree line. Then I walked to the garage and opened the door of his SUV.

I am a strategist. I know where a wolf hides what he cannot afford to be found.

Under the passenger seat there was a compartment — not factory, custom, cut into the frame by someone who had been paid to be quiet about it. Inside I found a small glass vial of designer perfume oil. Jasmine. Amber. The label was one I recognized from a boutique in the capital that only sold to she-wolves with money and appetite. Beside it, wrapped in black cloth, three unmarked bottles of scent-blocker — the kind of chemical compound designed specifically to strip infidelity traces from the skin before a marked mate could catch them.

My hands did not shake.

I photographed every item — top, bottom, label, seal — and slid each one back into place at the exact angle I had found it. I closed the compartment. I closed the door. I drove north.

---

Marcus Hale was already at the tree line when I arrived. Rogue, packless, lean the way wolves without a home get lean. He owed me a debt from a border negotiation three years ago, and Marcus is the kind of wolf who pays.

"Luna," he said. He did not smile. That was how I knew it was going to be bad.

"Tell me."

He told me.

Ryan had been walking into regional Alpha gatherings without his mating collar. Suppressing our bond's scent signature with the blockers I had just photographed. Letting unmated females step in close enough to scent him — an invitation, in our world, that only an unmated wolf could offer without insult.

He was entangled with women in three territories.

And the primary one — the one with a plan attached to her — was Alpha Khloe Spencer of the Silvercrest Pack.

"They aren't just sleeping together, Luna." Marcus's voice dropped. "They're planning. The alliance is a cover. She's positioning to be his mate. You are the obstacle they're scheduled to remove."

I listened without interrupting. When he finished, I said, "Thank you, Marcus," and I drove home.

I went straight to my office. I pulled out a fresh map. I began to write.

---

Two weeks passed.

I watched Ryan the way I now watched everything — like a woman reading a battlefield. I saw how his hand slid off my waist half a second too fast at pack events. I felt the mind-link between us go smooth and false, his emotions polished flat before they reached me. I saw the moonstone collar he still wore around his neck and I finally understood that it was not devotion. It was a costume.

And my mark began to fade.

The edges lightened first. The skin cooled. The warmth I had lived inside for two years drained out of it in slow, silent inches.

At pack dinner on the second Thursday, the Gamma's mate — Rosa, a sweet-faced healer with sharp eyes — stared at my neck for three full seconds too long.

I excused myself.

That night I opened my closet and moved every low-collared shirt to the back.

I needed Ryan to believe he was still in control. I needed the pack to see nothing.

I was not ready.

Not yet.
