Chapter 3

Brody found me in the corridor three days before the Blackmoor banquet.

I was carrying a stack of cleaned sparring mats toward the storage wing when his voice cut through the low hum of Omega workers sorting laundry nearby. He didn't call my name. He just said, loudly enough for everyone to hear: "Kehlani. A word."

I set the mats down against the wall. I turned.

He stood with his arms crossed, backlit by the window at the corridor's end. Three Omega workers had stopped folding. They weren't looking directly at us, but their hands had slowed. Everyone was listening.

"I hear Dorian Blackmoor sent you a personal invitation," Brody said. His tone was conversational. Almost amused. "To the alliance banquet."

"He did."

"That's interesting." He tilted his head. "Because the formal attendance roster goes through the Alpha's office. Not through discarded arrangements."

I said nothing. I counted the Omegas in my peripheral vision. Five now. Two more had drifted closer from the laundry room.

Brody's smile widened. "You think Dorian wants your counsel? He's being polite, Kehlani. That's what Alphas do when they're too well-bred to tell someone directly that their usefulness expired with their bond." He paused. Let it land. "You have nothing to offer any Alpha who hasn't already paid for your file-keeping."

The air in the corridor went very still.

I looked at him. I held his gaze for a measured five seconds. Long enough for the Omegas to notice I wasn't flinching. Long enough for Brody's smile to start tightening at the edges.

Then I said, quietly: "Then you won't mind if I attend."

I picked up the mats. I walked past him.

Behind me, I heard something metal hit the floor—one of the Omega workers had dropped a laundry hook. The clatter echoed. No one moved to pick it up.

Brody didn't respond.

I kept walking. I didn't look back. But I noted the silence that followed his non-response, and I added it to my read of the room's shifting loyalties. Five Omegas had just watched their Alpha fail to enforce a dismissal. That kind of moment doesn't erase itself.

---

Layla came to the Omega wing the next afternoon with an entourage.

She brought three Gamma warriors—two males I didn't recognize and one female who had been in my advanced tracking cohort four years ago. They moved through the narrow corridor like they were conducting an inspection, though no inspection had been scheduled. Layla's voice carried.

"I just want to make sure the facilities are adequate," she was saying to the Gamma beside her. "It's important that everyone feels supported, even in transitional housing."

I was in my quarters, door half-open, reviewing my Blackmoor correspondence. I heard every word.

They stopped outside my door.

"This one?" The male Gamma sounded surprised. "This is where—"

"Yes." Layla's tone was warm. Performatively sympathetic. "It's quite small, isn't it? But she's managing. I think it's almost poetic, really." A pause. "She spent years building this pack, and her wolf never even bothered to show up for it."

I set my pen down.

I stood. I stepped around the corner into the doorway.

Layla was leaning against the opposite wall, arms crossed, her Gamma audience arranged around her like a theater troupe. She saw me. Her smile didn't falter.

I looked at her. I said nothing for a long moment. I let the silence stretch until the female Gamma shifted her weight uncomfortably.

Then I said, very quietly: "How is the supply inventory going?"

Layla's smile tightened. Just slightly. Just enough.

The Gammas exchanged glances.

I didn't elaborate. I turned back into my quarters, picked up my folio, and walked past them toward the patrol wing. I didn't look back. But I felt Layla's gaze on my shoulders the entire way down the corridor, and I knew—she couldn't read half the shorthand. She had no idea which alliance terms were contingent, which healer supply chains were single-sourced, which border patrol rotations required manual override.

She had my desk. She didn't have my work.

---

Winter arrived hard and early that year.

The southern outpost assignment came through the patrol rotation on a Tuesday morning. Exposed ridge. Solo station. Forty-eight-hour shift during the coldest stretch of the season. No ranked wolf would take it. The duty roster had my name in Aldric's handwriting.

I packed my kit without comment. Silver-tipped patrol knife. Thermal gear. The small medical pouch I kept stocked from memory because the official healer inventory was now Layla's problem. I checked the blade twice. I checked the flares.

The outpost was a stone shelter built into the ridge, three walls and a roof, open to the wind on the southern face. I could see the entire valley from the watch point. Beautiful and brutal. I set my pack inside, checked the perimeter, and settled in.

The rogue raid alert sounded at 9:47 p.m. on the first night.

It came through the general territory mind-link—a hard, urgent pulse that every wolf in Silverfang would feel simultaneously. Rogue movement detected. Eastern border. Possible incursion.

I contacted Brody immediately through the general pack channel. *Southern outpost. Requesting backup status.*

Silence.

I waited. I checked my weapons. I scanned the valley below.

The mind-link flickered. Brody's presence was there—distant, distracted. Then the channel went quiet.

And through the fragmented general link, I caught the impression of where he was.

Not the eastern border. Not the command center.

The moonlit ridge. Layla's scent—electric, manufactured, overwhelming. The beginning of an unsanctioned marking ritual.

He had abandoned the southern border entirely.

I closed my eyes. I let myself feel it—not betrayal. I had stopped expecting anything else. This was confirmation. This was evidence.

I opened my eyes.

I drew my knife.

And I waited alone in the cold for whatever was coming.

Reborn Heiress: The Shadow Regent's Obsession Novel Cover
8.7
I stood as a ghost, watching the rhythmic thud of dirt hitting my own casket. My father, Senator Ellwood, dabbed his eyes for the cameras while my stepmother, Carroll, played the grieving mother perfectly, even though they were the ones who had paved the way for my murder. The vision shifted to a high-rise office where Isadore Walker, the terrifying "Shadow Regent," was methodically bankrupting every elite family that had betrayed me. He pressed a silver koi fish necklace to his lips and triggered a massive explosion, choosing to burn the entire world down just to join me in death. "Little Fish," he whispered. In my first life, I was a naive pawn who believed my best friend, Catarina, when she claimed I simply slipped into the pool at my Debutante Ball. I let the opportunistic Cody Stevens play the hero who "saved" me, leading to a hollow engagement that ended in my ruin. I never knew that my stepmother had conspired with our housekeeper to hide my true identity and keep me from my biological family. I died without ever understanding why Isadore, a man who treated me with cold indifference, would sacrifice everything for my sake. I didn't know that my entire life was a web of kidnappings and bribes designed to keep me as a political pawn. Suddenly, the heat of the explosion warped into the agonizing burn of icy water. I broke the surface, gasping for air, back at the very party where my downfall began three years ago. As I climbed out, I didn't look for Cody’s help. I wrapped myself in Isadore’s sandalwood-scented jacket and felt the cold steel of the tactical knife he had left in the pocket. This time, I wasn't the victim; I was the one who would light the fuse.
