Chapter 4

The first rogue came through the tree line at 10:14 p.m.

I saw the shadow move against the snow before I heard the growl. Low. Deliberate. The kind of sound a wolf makes when it knows you're alone.

I drew my knife.

The rogue was massive—easily two hundred pounds in wolf form, gray fur matted with ice. Its eyes locked on mine. It didn't hesitate. It lunged.

I sidestepped. The blade went in clean, silver-tipped and angled upward beneath the ribcage. The rogue's momentum carried it past me. It hit the ground hard, blood steaming in the snow. It didn't get up.

I pulled the blade free. My breath fogged in the cold. My hands were steady.

The second rogue was already inside the perimeter.

It came from the blind side—the southern face where the shelter had no wall. I turned too late. Claws raked across my ribs, tearing through thermal gear and skin in one motion. The pain was immediate and bright. I staggered. The rogue circled, teeth bared, eyes calculating.

I didn't have time to think. I drove the knife forward. The rogue twisted. The blade caught its shoulder instead of its throat. It howled. I yanked the knife back and slashed again. This time I hit the foreleg. The rogue stumbled, blood pouring onto the snow, and bolted into the trees.

I stood there. Breathing hard. My ribs were on fire. I pressed my hand to the wound. Blood soaked through my glove.

The dead bond-channel was silent. No backup. No acknowledgment. Just the cold and the snow and the body of the rogue I had killed alone.

I looked down at my hand. My blood was dark against the white ground.

And then I felt it.

Behind my ribs. Not pain. Not the hollow cold of the rejected mark. Something else. Something alive. Pressing outward. A presence I hadn't felt since I was six years old.

My breath caught.

I dropped to one knee. The wound pulled. I didn't care. I pressed both hands to my chest and felt it again—stronger this time. A living weight. A wolf.

My wolf.

My vision blurred. I blinked hard. When I looked down at the patrol blade still in my hand, my reflection stared back at me from the blood-streaked steel.

My eyes were silver.

I stared at my own face for a long moment. The wind howled through the open shelter. The rogue's body was already dusting with fresh snow. My ribs were bleeding through my glove.

I stood up.

I sheathed the knife. I gathered my pack. And I began the walk back to the pack house.

---

The healer's wing smelled like antiseptic and cedar.

I sat on the examination table while the healer—an older woman named Maris who had been with Silverfang for thirty years—cleaned the wound across my ribs. She didn't speak. She didn't meet my eyes. Her hands were efficient and impersonal.

I watched her work. I counted the stitches. Fourteen.

When she finished, she set the needle down and stepped back. "Keep it dry. Change the dressing twice a day. If it fevers, come back."

"Thank you," I said.

She nodded once. She didn't ask how it happened. She didn't ask where my backup was. She left the room without another word.

I sat there for a moment. Then I reached for my folio.

I opened it to a clean page. I wrote the date and time at the top. Then I wrote:

*Rogue raid alert: 9:47 p.m. Southern outpost. Requested backup through general pack channel. No response. Alpha Brody Calloway confirmed present in territory via mind-link—located at moonlit ridge with Layla Voss. Unsanctioned marking ceremony in progress during active raid alert.*

*Two rogues breached perimeter. First killed. Second wounded and driven off. Injuries sustained: deep laceration across ribs, fourteen stitches required. No pack backup arrived.*

*Outpost assignment: Solo station, forty-eight-hour shift, assigned by Beta Aldric Vane on Alpha's direct order. Timing: Assigned during coldest weather window, coinciding with planned ridge ceremony. Placement: Southern outpost—most vulnerable territory point, minimal backup proximity.*

I paused. I looked at the words.

Then I wrote:

*Deliberate exposure. Motive: elimination of witness.*

I closed the folio. I lay back on the cot. The wound pulled. I pressed my hand to the bandage and stared at the ceiling.

Behind my ribs, the presence stirred again. Quiet. Waiting.

I closed my eyes. I let myself feel it for exactly sixty seconds. The weight. The warmth. The certainty that I was not hollow. That I had never been hollow.

Then I pressed it back down.

Not yet.

I needed it to wait a little longer.

---

The next morning, I went to see Beta Aldric Vane.

His office was in the administrative wing—the one I used to occupy before Layla moved into my desk. I knocked. He looked up from a stack of patrol logs. His expression was carefully neutral.

"Kehlani."

"Beta Aldric." I stepped inside. I set a single sheet of formal Silverfang correspondence on his desk. "I'm requesting approval to attend the Blackmoor alliance banquet next week. Alpha Dorian Blackmoor extended a personal invitation."

Aldric picked up the correspondence. He read it slowly. His jaw tightened.

"This is—" He stopped. He set the paper down. "You're aware that alliance attendance is coordinated through the Alpha's office."

"I am. I'm also aware that refusing an allied Alpha's personal invitation to a pack member constitutes a diplomatic incident."

His eyes flicked to mine. He looked tired. Older than I remembered.

He picked up a pen. He signed the approval line at the bottom of the correspondence. He slid it back across the desk.

"Approved," he said quietly.

"Thank you, Beta."

I took the correspondence. I turned to leave.

"Kehlani."

I stopped. I looked back.

Aldric was staring at the patrol logs on his desk. He didn't look up.

"The southern outpost assignment," he said. His voice was very low. "That was—"

He stopped.

I waited.

He didn't finish.

I walked out.

Behind me, I heard him set his pen down. The sound echoed in the empty office.

I marked the date in my folio. Neutral ground. Allied witnesses. Evidence I couldn't speak under Alpha tone—but could present in a venue beyond Brody's jurisdiction.

I had everything I needed.

I just had to survive long enough to use it.

Reborn Heiress: The Shadow Regent's Obsession Novel Cover
8.7
I stood as a ghost, watching the rhythmic thud of dirt hitting my own casket. My father, Senator Ellwood, dabbed his eyes for the cameras while my stepmother, Carroll, played the grieving mother perfectly, even though they were the ones who had paved the way for my murder. The vision shifted to a high-rise office where Isadore Walker, the terrifying "Shadow Regent," was methodically bankrupting every elite family that had betrayed me. He pressed a silver koi fish necklace to his lips and triggered a massive explosion, choosing to burn the entire world down just to join me in death. "Little Fish," he whispered. In my first life, I was a naive pawn who believed my best friend, Catarina, when she claimed I simply slipped into the pool at my Debutante Ball. I let the opportunistic Cody Stevens play the hero who "saved" me, leading to a hollow engagement that ended in my ruin. I never knew that my stepmother had conspired with our housekeeper to hide my true identity and keep me from my biological family. I died without ever understanding why Isadore, a man who treated me with cold indifference, would sacrifice everything for my sake. I didn't know that my entire life was a web of kidnappings and bribes designed to keep me as a political pawn. Suddenly, the heat of the explosion warped into the agonizing burn of icy water. I broke the surface, gasping for air, back at the very party where my downfall began three years ago. As I climbed out, I didn't look for Cody’s help. I wrapped myself in Isadore’s sandalwood-scented jacket and felt the cold steel of the tactical knife he had left in the pocket. This time, I wasn't the victim; I was the one who would light the fuse.
