Chapter 4

The second dossier arrived two nights later.

Beta Damon Cole had secretly audio-logged the pack house through the internal council line. He forwarded the encrypted files directly to Lucas’s terminal, and Lucas didn't hide them from me. He set the laptop on the table between us, clicked play, and let me listen to the slow, poisonous collapse of the world that had almost killed me.

The first recording was from the Alpha suite, dated forty-eight hours prior.

The audio opened with the sharp click of Lylah’s heels pacing across hardwood. She was breathing fast, her voice tight and high. For weeks, she had watched Gideon pull away, slipping into an obsession she couldn't break.

"Look at me, Gideon!" she demanded. Her voice shook with suppressed fury. "The entire pack is whispering. You're walking around like a dead man, smelling things that aren't there. Why are you haunted by an omega you threw out? I am your Luna! I am the woman you chose. I did what had to be done to protect your line, and you treat me like a stranger in my own home!"

Paper rustled. Gideon didn’t raise his voice. When he spoke, his tone was so flat, so utterly drained of warmth, that it sounded like dry ice.

"Because she was chosen by the Moon Goddess and you were chosen by me," Gideon said. "And I am beginning to understand the difference."

A terrible, suffocating silence fell over the recording.

Lylah didn't scream. She didn't argue. Through the microphone, there was only the faint, dry scrape of wood on glass. It was her vanity. She had reached out and touched the small, carved wooden box where she kept every trinket Gideon had ever bought her.

Then came the soft click of the door closing. She had walked out into the dark.

The next file was logged just past midnight in the clinic wing.

Helene Marsh was dying. The pack’s head healer had taken a turn for the worse after the Blood Moon, her lungs failing from old age and stress. But the terror of Gideon’s Alpha tone had kept her silent for weeks. She couldn't face Gideon. She was terrified his voice would snap her neck before she got the words out.

So she called Damon Cole to her bedside instead.

In the recording, her breath came in wet, rattling gasps.

"Beta," she wheezed, her frail fingers catching Damon’s sleeve. "You have to listen. Before my wolf slips away... you have to know what happened that night."

"Rest, Helene," Damon muttered quietly.

"No!" The old woman gasped for air, coughing roughly. "The Blood Moon... the alarms. The clinic was in absolute chaos. The two dens were adjacent. Two premature infants... identical emergency warmers. The junior healer panicked. Damon, the tags were swapped. The scent profiles... I checked them after the fire cleared. I buried the charts because I was afraid of the Alpha. I knew what he would do to me."

Damon’s breathing stopped completely. "Helene. What are you saying?"

"Kaia's pup wasn't in the incubator," Helene wept, tears thick in her failing voice. "The pup Lylah poisoned... it wasn't Kaia's. Run the test, Damon. If you have any honor left in your blood, unseal the evidence box and test the blood-scent."

A heavy silence followed. The sound of Damon rising from his chair was the only thing captured before the recording cut out.

The final file was an hour later.

Damon hadn't waited for morning. He had summoned Gideon and dragged Lylah down to the healer’s den, locking the heavy deadbolt behind them.

The recording picked up the metallic hum of the medical den's air filters. A metal latch clicked open. It was the sealed evidence box Helene had hidden beneath the floorboards—the one containing the stained swaddling blanket taken from the dead infant.

Helene sat propped up against her pillows, breathing through an oxygen mask. Her eyes were sunken, but her hands were steady with the desperation of someone facing the grave.

"Lylah," Helene whispered, her voice carrying an eerie, hollow authority.

"What is this nonsense, Damon?" Lylah snapped, though her voice lacked its usual polish. "Why am I in this filthy room at two in the morning?"

Helene didn't answer. Summoning the last ounce of strength left in her dying body, she lunged forward. She shoved the stiff, dried cloth right into Lylah’s face, pressing the fabric hard against her mouth and nose.

"Inhale," Helene ordered. "Smell your victory, Luna."

Through the speakers, a sharp, ragged gasp tore through the air.

Lylah inhaled.

Her nostrils flared wide. In an instant, the primal instinct of a mother’s wolf obliterated five years of calculated lies. It wasn't the scent of an omega's bastard. It wasn't my child.

It was pine. Ash. And her own sweet milk.

It was the Carter bloodline. Her own flesh and blood. The son she had fed wolfsbane with her own hands.

Lylah’s pupils must have blown wide open. A strange, wet choking sound came from her throat. She didn't scream words. She opened her mouth and let out a jagged, silent gasp of air, her hands clawing frantically at her own face as her mind cracked down the center.

Across the room, the snap of a glass seal echoed like a gunshot.

Damon unsealed the reference vial.

In that exact second, hundreds of miles away in Lucas’s study, the scar on my neck flared with a sudden, icy shock.

Back in the Shadowmere den, my phantom scent didn't just linger—it exploded. The room was suddenly drowned in warm amber and white jasmine, thick and suffocating, the furious ghost of a sacred bond that had been butchered for nothing.

Damon stumbled backward, his heavy frame slamming hard against the doorframe to keep from falling.

Then came the thud of knees hitting concrete.

Gideon collapsed. The East Coast's most feared Alpha crashed to the stone floor like a felled oak.

A sound ripped out of his chest. It wasn't an Alpha tone. It wasn't a roar of authority. It was a raw, mangled wail—an inhuman sound of absolute ruin that scraped against the microphone until the audio distorted into static.

In the bed, a soft sigh escaped Helene Marsh. The steady hum of her heart monitor flatlined into a long, unbroken tone.

She closed her eyes, and she didn't open them again.
