Chapter 4

The box sat in the corridor outside my door like a body waiting for burial.

I heard them moving it before I saw it—two Omegas carrying something heavy, their footsteps uneven on the stone. Then the dull thud of cardboard hitting floor, and the sound of them walking away fast, like they didn't want to be seen.

I opened the door.

Cardboard. Taped shut. No label. But I knew what it was before I touched it.

I dragged it inside and closed the door.

Adley was asleep in the sling against my chest. I stood over the box for a long moment, breathing through my nose, counting the beats until my hands stopped wanting to shake.

Then I knelt and pulled the tape.

The birth blanket was on top. Cream-colored wool, the one Miriam had wrapped Adley in the night she was born. I lifted it out and set it on the cot, smoothing the fabric flat with my palm.

Beneath it: books I'd kept on the Luna suite nightstand. A hairbrush. Three dresses I'd worn to pack functions. A framed photograph of Brandon and me at our mating ceremony, both of us smiling like we believed it.

I closed the box.

I didn't look at the rest. I didn't need to. Someone—Kendall, probably, or one of her staff—had gone through the Luna suite and decided what was mine and what wasn't. And everything that was mine fit in a single cardboard box small enough for two Omegas to carry.

I pushed the box into the corner and covered it with a spare blanket.

Then I sat on the cot with Adley and stared at the wall until the sky went grey.

---

I saw Declan in the corridor two days later.

He was coming from the direction of Brandon's office, a stack of reports under one arm, moving with the efficient purpose of a Beta who had six things to do and not enough hours to do them. He saw me and slowed.

For a second I thought he'd walk past.

He didn't.

He stopped three feet from me and stood there, his jaw working like he was chewing words he couldn't get out.

I held his gaze.

Declan had been Brandon's Beta for eight years. I'd known him longer than that. He'd stood beside me at pack functions, deferred to me in public, called me Luna without hesitation. And on the night I was bleeding out on Miriam's table, he'd been the one standing in the Silverfang great hall, holding the mind-link open, relaying Brandon's rejection vow into my skull word by word while I flatlined.

He looked at me now with the specific discomfort of a man who could not reconcile what he had done with what he was looking at.

"Blair," he said quietly.

I waited.

He shifted the reports to his other arm. "I—" He stopped. Started again. "I was following orders."

It wasn't an apology. It was a plea.

I adjusted Adley's sling and kept my voice level. "You were following your Alpha's order."

Not forgiveness. Acknowledgment.

Declan's shoulders dropped half an inch.

I stepped closer. Close enough that he had to look down to meet my eyes. "When the time comes," I said, "I'll need you to tell the truth about what you did."

His throat worked. "What time?"

"You'll know."

I walked past him.

He didn't follow. But I felt his gaze on my back all the way down the corridor, heavy as a hand.

---

The announcement came three days later.

I was scrubbing the prep room floor when I heard Judith's voice in the great hall, bright and commanding, calling the ranked wolves to attention.

"The Lycan King will conduct a territorial inspection within the month," she said. "We will prepare accordingly."

The room went silent for a beat. Then the noise started—murmured excitement, nervous energy, the particular buzz of a pack that knows it's about to be scrutinized by the highest authority in the hierarchy.

I kept scrubbing.

But my wolf stirred—sharp, sudden, a flicker of something that felt almost like anticipation.

I pressed my palm flat against the wet stone and breathed through it.

*Not yet.*

---

They assigned me to water service.

The duty roster went up two weeks before the inspection. My name was listed under "reception staff—perimeter service." I would carry a water pitcher. I would refill cups. I would stand at the edge of the room and be invisible.

Kendall had ordered a new dress. I heard her talking about it in the corridor outside the Luna suite, her voice high and pleased. Silk, she said. Deep blue. Cut to show the mark on her throat.

I said nothing.

That night I pulled the floorboard up and counted.

Eleven vials. Two transcribed ledger entries I'd memorized during a cleaning shift in Judith's office. And Miriam's bloodwork records, locked in her personal files, waiting.

It wasn't everything.

But it might be enough.

If the right authority was in the room.

If my body finished doing what it had been doing for weeks—burning off the suppressants, sharpening my senses, waking something that had been buried so long I'd forgotten it was there.

I pressed the vials back into the dark and replaced the board.

Then I lay on the cot with Adley and stared at the ceiling until my pulse evened out.

---

Four days before the inspection, Judith made a mistake.

I was cleaning the household office when the emergency call came through—one of the perimeter patrols had found a rogue near the eastern border. All ranked wolves to the gate. Judith dropped the account book on her desk and left at a near-run.

I stood in the empty office.

Forty seconds. Maybe less.

I crossed to the desk. The book was open, mid-entry, Judith's precise handwriting filling the columns.

I pulled the small device from my apron pocket—the one I'd borrowed from the communications room under the pretext of filing a registry report. My hands were steady. I flipped to the section labeled *Household Supplements* and photographed three pages.

Recurring line item. Coded under *dietary supplements, Blair A.*

Delivery dates spanning four years.

In Judith's own hand.

I slipped the device back into my pocket, returned the book to its exact position, and left through the side door.

My wolf surged.

Not a flicker this time. Not an ember.

A force.

I made it to the corridor before my knees buckled. I braced against the wall, one hand flat on the stone, breathing hard through my nose. My ribs ached. My skin felt too tight. Something vast and silver-bright was pressing against the inside of my bones, testing the edges, looking for a way out.

*Not yet,* I told it.

It pushed back.

I held the wall until the pressure eased. Then I straightened, adjusted Adley's sling, and walked back to my quarters with my head up and my stride even.

Four days.

I had four days to hold it together.

Four days until the Lycan King walked into the great hall and I stood at the perimeter with a water pitcher in my hands.

Four days until my body finished what it had started.

I pressed my palm against the cot frame that night and felt the pulse under my skin—strong, steady, inevitable.

And somewhere deep in the dark, my wolf opened one eye.
