Chapter 5

Kendall's summons came at dawn.

I was feeding Adley when the knock came—three sharp raps, the kind that don't wait for an answer. The door opened before I could stand.

"Omega." It was one of Kendall's attendants, a young she-wolf whose name I'd never learned. "The Luna requires your assistance. Now."

I settled Adley in her basket and followed.

The Luna suite smelled like it always had—lavender and beeswax—but the furniture had been rearranged. Kendall's things everywhere. My things gone. She stood in front of the full-length mirror in a silk dressing gown, her hair already pinned up in an elaborate style that must have taken an hour.

"Help me with the dress," she said without turning.

The gown hung on a standing frame near the window. Deep blue silk, cut low enough to display the mark on her throat. I lifted it carefully and brought it over.

Kendall raised her arms. I slipped the fabric over her head and began working the clasps up her spine.

She watched me in the mirror. Not my hands. My face.

"You should be grateful I'm allowing you to serve today," she said. "Judith thought it might be... inappropriate. Given your history."

I kept my expression neutral and moved to the next clasp.

"But I told her no." Kendall's smile was small and satisfied. "I said you'd earned the right to witness what a real Luna looks like."

I reached the clasp at her neckline. My fingers brushed the edge of the mark—the bite Brandon had given her three weeks ago, the one that had burned through my dying bond like a second wound.

The chemical smell hit me immediately.

Not perfume this time. Not the floral mask she wore in public. This was coming from the scar tissue itself—sharp, synthetic, the exact scent I'd been cataloguing in vials for weeks. And beneath it, something else. Something wrong.

I looked closer without moving my head.

The edges of the mark were discolored. Not dramatically—just a shade paler than the surrounding skin, like old bruising that hadn't quite healed. And the skin around it was warm. Warmer than it should be.

Kendall didn't know. She was still watching my face in the mirror, waiting for some reaction she could feed on.

I fastened the final clasp and stepped back.

"You look well, Luna," I said.

It was the most accurate thing I'd said in weeks.

She looked exactly like someone whose borrowed bond was already beginning to cost her.

---

The great hall filled quickly.

I stood at the serving staff's perimeter with a water tray, positioned near the eastern wall where the light from the high windows wouldn't catch me. Invisible. Exactly where I was supposed to be.

Brandon entered first, Judith at his side. He wore formal Alpha dress—dark jacket, the Ironveil crest on his chest. He looked composed. Confident. Like a man who had made his choices and believed they were right.

Kendall entered after him, and the room shifted. Wolves turned to look. She moved through the space with the particular grace of someone who had rehearsed this moment, her hand light on Brandon's arm, the blue silk catching the light just right.

The mark on her throat was fully visible.

I watched from the perimeter and felt nothing.

Then the outer doors opened, and the Lycan King's convoy entered.

The room went silent.

Not the polite hush of deference. The bone-deep silence of wolves in the presence of an apex predator.

The King walked in first—tall, silver-haired, moving with the controlled power of someone who had never needed to prove it. His aura filled the space before he did, a pressure that made every wolf in the hall instinctively lower their gaze.

Behind him: his escort. Four Lycan guards in formal dress, and one other.

Lycan Prince Caelan.

I filed his presence the way I filed everything: Crown heir, direct authority, useful. He was younger than I'd expected—maybe early thirties—with silver hair and a face that gave nothing away. He moved quietly, his attention sweeping the room with the efficiency of someone trained to assess threats.

I did not look at him longer than necessary.

My job was to be invisible.

Brandon stepped forward and began the formal greeting. The King responded with the expected courtesies. Judith smiled her warmest smile. Kendall stood at Brandon's side, radiant and poised.

I moved along the perimeter, tray level, my steps silent on the stone floor.

The King's formal inspection began. He asked questions about territory management, patrol schedules, pack health records. Brandon answered with the confidence of an Alpha who believed his house was in order.

I approached from the side, water tray extended.

The King's hand reached toward the cup.

And then he froze.

His hand stayed where it was—extended, not touching the glass. His nostrils flared. Once. Twice. A third time with controlled intensity.

The conversation continued for two more seconds before people began to notice.

The most powerful Lycan in the realm had gone completely still while looking at a servant woman in Omega clothes.

I felt Caelan's attention snap toward me in the same instant—sharp, sudden, his entire body locking.

The King's eyes fixed on my face.

He spoke a single word into the absolute silence.

A name.

Not Blair.

A name I had never heard before. A name that felt like it had been waiting twenty-three years to be spoken.

My body locked.

I didn't understand.

But something beneath my dormant wolf—beneath the years of suppressants, beneath the grief and the hollow mark—*responded*.

A silver-white light cracked beneath my skin.

My ribs burned. My spine arced. The water tray fell from my hands and shattered on the stone floor, and I couldn't hear it over the roar building in my ears.

Something vast and ancient was waking up.

And it knew exactly who I was.
