My Mate Rejected Me for His Pregnant Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday evening, but I didn't know it yet.

I pushed open the door to Valentin's study, the completed border-defense strategy tucked under my arm. Three weeks of work. My finest formations, every contingency mapped, every weakness sealed. The kind of strategy that would make Nighthollow untouchable for the next five years.

The room was empty.

My field journal sat open on his desk.

I stopped breathing.

It was always locked. Always in my quarters, hidden beneath the loose floorboard by the window. The battered leather cover was unmistakable, the pages filled with my shorthand — the coded language I'd developed in college, the one no one else could read.

Except now, across the title page, in Valentin's bold handwriting: *Valentin Shaw — Strategic Records.*

My name was nowhere.

I set the strategy folder down carefully. Walked to the desk. Traced the ink with my thumb. It was dry. He'd written it days ago, maybe weeks. Long enough that he'd stopped thinking of it as theft and started thinking of it as correction.

My wolf stirred faintly inside me, a whisper of unease I'd felt so many times before. *Not enough. Never enough.*

I closed the journal. Smoothed the cover. Told myself it didn't matter.

Then I picked up the small wrapped package from my bag — a vial of the healing remedy I'd spent two months perfecting, the only compound that worked on his chronic shoulder injury — and went to find him.

Tonight was our sixth anniversary. Tonight, I would ask him again to complete the marking ritual. Tonight, he would finally say yes.

I found him in the main hall, dressed in the charcoal suit I liked, standing by the long table I'd had the Omegas set with candles and white roses. He looked good. He always looked good.

He turned when I entered, and something in his expression made me slow.

"Valentin," I said softly. "Happy anniversary."

He nodded once, his jaw tight.

I crossed to him, the package warm in my hands. My wolf pushed forward hopefully, the way she always did when we were close to him, searching for the bond that should have been there, the connection that always felt just out of reach.

I lifted onto my toes, moving to nuzzle his neck — the gesture I'd tried twice before, the intimate precursor to a marking bite, the one that said *I'm ready, I'm yours, please finish this.*

He jerked back like I'd burned him.

His face twisted. Revulsion. Unmistakable, undisguised revulsion.

"Don't," he said sharply.

I froze, my hand still half-raised.

"Your scent," he continued, louder now. Loud enough that the two Omegas clearing dishes at the far end of the hall glanced up. "It makes my skin crawl, Fiona. I've told you this before. You need to stop pressing for things you haven't earned."

The words landed like stones.

My wolf went completely still inside me. Not hurt. Not wounded. Just… silent. Like she'd heard something final.

I lowered my hand. Set the wrapped vial on the table between us, the glass clinking softly against the wood.

"I'm sorry," I said quietly. My voice didn't shake. I was proud of that. "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

I turned and walked out.

Behind me, I heard him exhale — relief or irritation, I couldn't tell anymore — and then the low murmur of him speaking to someone on his phone.

I made it to the corridor outside the east wing before my legs started shaking.

I pressed my palm against the wall, breathing slowly, counting the stones in the floor the way I used to when I was a child trying not to cry. *One. Two. Three.*

Then I caught it.

A scent.

Warm. Floral. Completed.

It threaded beneath the familiar smell of the pack house like a melody I shouldn't be able to hear, and my wolf — silent a moment ago — lurched violently to attention inside me, her presence suddenly sharp and furious.

I knew that scent.

I followed it down the hall, my footsteps silent on the runner carpet, my heart beating so hard I could feel it in my throat.

The private chamber door at the end of the corridor was open a half-inch.

I pushed it wider.

Hailey Bennett stood by the window, one hand resting on a visibly rounded belly. Her hair was loose, her dress soft and pale. She looked… radiant.

And on her throat, raw and fresh and unmistakable, was a marking bite.

Valentin's marking bite.

He stood with his back to me, staring out at the darkening forest, his shoulders tense.

For three full seconds, no one moved.

Then I spoke.

"How long."

It wasn't a question.

Valentin turned slowly. His face was blank, carefully arranged, but his eyes — his eyes knew exactly what I was looking at.

Hailey's hand tightened over her belly. She didn't say anything. She didn't have to.

The bond I'd been waiting six years to complete had never existed.

He'd already given it to someone else.
