My Mate Rejected Me for His Pregnant Luna
My Mate Rejected Me for His Pregnant Luna Chapter 1
The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, but I didn't know it yet.
I stood at the Ironvale pack gate with a gift box in my hands and the moonstone pendant warm against my throat. Ten years. A decade of building Silverfang together, of late nights mapping territory and early mornings training warriors. I'd chosen the gift carefully—a custom blade with our mating date engraved on the hilt. Dominic would love it.
The guard at the gate looked at me with casual confusion. "Can I help you?"
"I'm here to see Alpha Dominic," I said, smiling. "I'm Clara, his—"
"Oh, the Alpha's expecting someone?" He glanced at his clipboard. "Didn't see your name on the list."
I blinked. "No, it's a surprise. For our anniversary."
The second guard—a younger wolf with kind eyes—perked up. "Anniversary? That's sweet. Yeah, the Alpha's in the great hall. Been here all week with the family. You know the way?"
All week.
Family.
The words landed wrong, like stones dropped into still water. Dominic had told me Ironvale was hostile territory. Rival pack. Dangerous. He came here alone to manage threats, to keep borders secure. That's what he'd said for years.
But these guards knew him. Spoke about him like he was theirs.
"I'll find it," I said quietly.
The walk from the gate to the pack house felt longer than it should have. The grounds were well-kept. Wolves nodded to each other as they passed. Children played near a fountain. This wasn't a hostile territory. This was a home.
The great hall doors stood open. I heard voices inside—laughter, the clink of silverware, the warm hum of a pack at dinner. I stepped through the doorway and the sound stopped.
Dominic sat at the head of the table. A woman sat at his right in the Luna's chair—blonde, beautiful, visibly pregnant. Four pups surrounded them, calling out over each other, and one of them—a boy with Dominic's dark hair—climbed into his lap and said, "Daddy, can I have more?"
Daddy.
The mate bond in my chest flared hot and wrong. I felt it—a second signature pulsing beneath Dominic's skin, layered over ours like a scar over a scar. He'd marked her. Another woman. Another bond.
The room went silent. Every wolf turned to stare. Two Luna-scents in one hall. The air felt thick with it.
Dominic's face went white. Then red. Then blank.
The blonde woman stood slowly, one hand on her rounded belly. Her eyes moved from me to Dominic and back again. "Who is this?"
"No one," Dominic said. His voice was flat. "She's no one."
I opened my mouth but nothing came out. The gift box slipped from my hands and hit the floor. The blade inside rattled.
"Dominic," I finally managed. "What is this?"
He stood. Walked toward me. His face was stone. "You shouldn't be here."
"I'm your mate." My voice cracked. "I'm your Luna."
The blonde woman laughed—a sharp, brittle sound. "His mate? Sweetheart, I'm his mate. I'm the Luna of Ironvale. Have been for eight years."
Eight years.
I looked at Dominic. Waited for him to deny it. To explain. To fix this.
He met my eyes and I saw nothing there. No love. No regret. Just cold calculation.
"I, Dominic Steele, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack," he said clearly, loudly, so every wolf in the hall could hear, "reject you, Clara Voss, as my mate and Luna."
The bond snapped.
It felt like a wire pulled tight inside my chest and then severed—white-hot, instant, absolute. The Luna mark on my collarbone went cold. Then hollow. Like a door closing in an empty room.
I staggered. My knees buckled but I caught myself on the doorframe.
"She'll serve as Omega here," Dominic continued, speaking to the room now, not to me. "Until I decide otherwise."
The blonde woman crossed the hall. She moved like a queen. When she reached me, she smiled—sweet and poisonous—and her fingers closed around the moonstone pendant at my throat.
"This is mine now," she said softly.
She yanked. The chain bit into my neck and then snapped. She fastened it around her own throat, the stone settling just above the swell of her pregnancy.
I stood there. Bondless. Markless. My thumb found the hollow at the base of my throat where the pendant used to rest.
Every wolf in the hall watched. Witnesses. This wasn't private. This was a public execution.
Dominic turned his back on me. Returned to his seat. Picked up his fork.
"Someone show her to the Omega quarters," he said.
The blonde woman leaned close. Her breath was warm against my ear. "Welcome to Ironvale," she whispered. "I'm Estella. And those are my pups. All five of them." She pressed one hand to her belly. "This one too."
Five.
Ten years I gave him. Ten years I built Silverfang. And he built this.
