My Mate Rejected Me for Carrying the Lycan Heir Chapter 1

The healer's confirmation was still warm in my hands when I pushed open the door to Nolan's study at 4:47 that afternoon. Ten years. Ten years of needles and wolfsbane tonics that made my wolf claw at my ribs from the inside, and finally, finally, the paper in my pocket said *positive*. I didn't knock. I never knocked on Nolan's door. I was his mate.

The smell hit me before my eyes did. Pine and cedar — that was Nolan, always had been, the scent that used to make my wolf preen. But layered over it, soaked into it, was something sharp and floral. Jasmine. Monica's jasmine, thick enough to gag on, ground into his skin like she'd been there for hours, not minutes.

They were on his desk. Her blouse was open. His hand was fisted in her hair.

My mate mark went cold first — an ice-water drop under my collarbone — and then it went *empty*, like a door closing on a room I'd lived in for a decade and finding nothing behind it.

Monica looked at me over Nolan's shoulder and smiled.

Nolan didn't flinch.

Somewhere behind my sternum, my wolf let out one broken, strangled howl — and then went silent, the way a person goes silent after a slap they didn't see coming. I felt the quiet swallow her whole, and I understood, distantly, that she had nothing left to fight with. Ten years of tonics had made sure of that.

I didn't scream. I had spent a decade training myself not to scream.

My eyes dropped instead — to the desk, to the folder splayed open beside Nolan's elbow, healer's letterhead, Elias Warrick's cramped handwriting. *Payment received, 12,000. Essence substitution procedure, viable. Source vial: XLR-V — Prince Xavier, Lycan Royal Repository.*

I didn't understand it. But I understood enough to know it was a weapon, and it was aimed at me.

My hand found my phone. I photographed the page. Then the next. Nolan was still buttoning his shirt when I slid the phone back into my pocket, my thumb pressing the lock screen like a held breath.

"Bella—" His voice had already gone cold, already gone to that flat commanding register he used on Deltas who stepped out of line. Not on me. Not ever on me, until now.

I turned and walked out before he could finish shaping whatever lie came next.

---

He didn't wait for me to speak first. That was the part I hadn't accounted for.

That night, under the gathering hall's floodlights, with the whole pack assembled for what I still believed was going to be an announcement of joy, Nolan stood on the stone dais and lifted his chin. His Alpha tone rolled out over three hundred wolves like a wave of pressure against my skull.

"I, Nolan, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Bella Greene, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck detonated.

It wasn't pain like a wound. It was pain like unmaking — white and total, radiating down through my spine, through the place where my wolf had gone quiet, splitting her further open. My knees hit the stone floor before I even decided to fall. Somewhere above me, hundreds of faces watched a Luna crumble.

"She conceived outside our bond," Nolan said, and his voice cracked with something that looked, to three hundred witnesses, exactly like grief. "I stood by her for ten years. I will not stand by betrayal."

I didn't beg. My throat wouldn't have made the words even if I'd tried. I pressed my palm flat against the floor and thought of the photographs still sitting in my phone, and I held onto that the way I'd once held onto hope.

Two enforcers had me by the arms before I could rise on my own. They dragged me — still on my knees for most of it — down the length of the hall, past faces I'd fed and healed and comforted for a decade, out through the front gates, past the boundary stones that marked the edge of everything I'd ever called home.

They dropped me in the dirt beyond the line.

No pack. No title. No mark. A baby the whole pack now believed was proof of my disgrace.

I lay there for one long minute, the fading mark weeping thin lines of blood down my collar, the night sky wide and indifferent above me.

Then something shifted low in my chest — not pain this time. A growl. My wolf, broken and starved for months, finding one last coal of fury and blowing on it until it caught.

I pressed my hand flat against my stomach. I steadied my breathing.

Then I reached into my pocket and opened the photographs.

I rose to my feet.
