Chapter 2

I wait until the hall is empty before I get up off the floor.

Not because I can't move sooner. Because I won't let anyone watch me do it.

My ribs scream when I push myself upright. The bruises from the cellar have had two hours to settle in deep, and every breath is a negotiation. I straighten anyway. I smooth the borrowed dress with both hands. I walk out of the ceremony hall the same way I walked into every room in this pack house for six years — quietly, without drawing attention, cataloguing the exits.

There is one thing left to do.

*

Cayden's study is on the second floor, at the end of the east corridor. I know this hall the way I know the back of my own hands — I've walked it in the dark, in the early hours before anyone else was awake, carrying supplies and records and, for the past eight months, small glass vials that no one in this pack ever thought to ask about.

The door is unlocked. It's always unlocked. He never imagined anyone in this house would take something from him.

I don't take anything.

I move to his desk and set the vial down in the center of it, where he can't miss it. The glass catches the lamplight — pale amber liquid, carefully measured, the last of a batch I brewed three weeks ago. The formula took me four months to develop. I tested it on myself first, a low dose, to confirm the chemistry was right. I never told him. I never told anyone.

I take the folded note from my pocket and place it beside the vial. The handwriting is mine — precise, unhurried, the same hand that organized his supply records and drafted his warrior rotation schedules and wrote out the medicinal catalogs he never once looked at.

*You'll need a new healer. This is the last dose.*

I look at it for a moment. Then I fold my hands at my sides and walk out.

I don't take the herbal stores from the kitchen, though I cultivated every plant in them. I don't take the records from the archive shelf, though I built that system from nothing. I don't take the years. You can't carry years.

I walk through the pack house I managed for six years and I don't touch a single wall.

The front gate is unguarded at this hour — they moved the watch rotation to the north perimeter for the ceremony. Another thing I knew. I organized the schedule.

The cold hits me when I step through the gate. The mark-scar on my neck is hollow and dead, a patch of skin that has forgotten what warmth felt like. I don't lift my hand to it. I've done that enough.

I don't look back at the lights.

The rogue territory begins where the Ironveil tree line thins and the ground changes — harder, less tended, the kind of land that belongs to no one and therefore to everyone who is desperate enough. I know the smell of it. I've been studying the border maps for months, the same way I studied everything in this pack: quietly, thoroughly, without anyone noticing.

I have no wolf. I have no pack. I have the knowledge in my hands and the intelligence accumulated over six years of being underestimated by everyone in a position to do me harm.

It's enough to start with. It will have to be.

*

Lyra finds me before dawn.

I hear her before I see her — a specific rhythm in the undergrowth, too deliberate to be an animal, too careful to be a rogue. I stop walking and wait, hands still at my sides.

She steps out of the tree line and looks at me for a long moment. Her Omega brand is visible on her wrist, still raw-edged. She has a pack bag over one shoulder and the expression of someone who made a decision and is not interested in discussing whether it was the right one.

"You're going the wrong way," she says. "The eastern route has rogue clusters. I tracked them last week before they pulled my patrol assignment."

I look at her. "You followed me."

"I followed your scent trail." She adjusts the bag on her shoulder. "You're not hard to track. You walk like you're trying not to leave footprints."

Something loosens slightly in my chest. Not warmth, exactly. More like the recognition of a door that hasn't been locked yet.

"The northern route," I say.

"Northern route," she confirms.

We walk.

*

By the time the sun comes up over Ironveil territory behind us, Cayden will be waking to my scent in every corridor — warm, sourceless, wrong. He will find the vial on his desk. He will read the note and not yet understand what it means, only that I left it deliberately, only that I am gone.

His wolf will begin to go quiet.

He will tell himself the phantom scent will fade.

It won't.
