Chapter 4

The knock came after midnight.

I'd been sitting at the stone table for three hours, cross-checking my reconstructed logs against the timeline of Andy Bell's decline. My eyes burned. My hand ached from writing. The lancet sat beside the papers like a talisman, its engraved oath catching the lamplight.

I opened the door expecting no one.

Bryson's Beta stood in the threshold. He held a folder—thick, bound with string, the kind of file that takes months to build. He didn't greet me. Didn't apologize for the hour. Just extended the folder.

"From the Prince," he said.

I took it. The weight surprised me. Heavy. Dense with pages.

"He said to tell you: it's your tribunal."

Then he left. No explanation. No instruction. Just the folder and the sound of his boots on gravel fading into the dark.

I closed the door. Set the folder on the table. Stared at it for a long moment before I opened it.

The first page was a financial record. Holly Bell's name at the top. Three shell accounts, each one traced backward through intermediary transactions to a single source: a rogue chemist operating in the eastern border territories. The purchases were listed in clinical detail. Pheromone compounds. Scent-overlay base. Silver-resistant adhesive. The dates ran back six months.

Six months.

She'd been planning this since before Andy Bell died.

I turned the page.

The second document was a mind-link fragment. Intercepted under Lycan Council monitoring protocols. The header noted the authorization code, the timestamp, the participants.

Colter Murphy. Holly Bell.

I read it once. Then again. The words didn't change.

*"The dose goes in during the routine check. He won't feel it until after. You're sure the vial placement will hold?"*

*"In her herb stores. Alphabetical order. She's compulsive about it. They'll find it exactly where we put it."*

*"And the logs?"*

*"Already altered. The entries match the timeline. No one will question it."*

Colter's voice. Calm. Methodical. Discussing Andy Bell's murder the way someone discusses a supply order.

I set the page down. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I'd expected rage, or grief, or the bone-deep exhaustion that comes after betrayal. Instead I felt something colder. Sharper.

Clarity.

I opened my counter-record. Added a final annotation at the bottom of the page: *Deviation from this record administered by Alpha Colter Murphy, as confirmed by intercepted mind-link dated [timestamp]. Signed under Healer's oath.*

I pressed the lancet's engraved edge into the paper beside my signature. Not a cut. Just pressure. Enough to leave an impression.

Then I closed the file and sat back.

Bryson had been building this case for three months. He'd known something was wrong. He'd moved carefully, gathered evidence, waited for the moment when it would matter most. He hadn't told me. Hadn't warned me. Hadn't interfered.

He'd just built the file and handed it over the night before the tribunal opened.

*It's your tribunal.*

I looked at the folder. At the pages that would destroy Colter and Holly in front of five hundred witnesses. At the evidence I hadn't asked for but desperately needed.

Bryson could have presented this himself. Could have walked into that tribunal as the Lycan Prince with the file in hand and dismantled Colter's case without my involvement. He had the rank. The authority. The evidence.

He'd given it to me instead.

I didn't know what to do with that.

*

The sun was barely up when I heard the second knock.

This one was hesitant. Quiet. The kind of knock that expects to be turned away.

I opened the door.

Delia Park stood on the threshold, her face pale, her hands clutching a folded piece of paper like it was the only thing keeping her upright. She was my junior trainee. Twenty-three. Brilliant with sutures but terrified of authority. I'd spent two years teaching her to trust her own hands.

She looked at me now like she expected me to send her away.

"I'm sorry," she said immediately. "I should have—at the assembly, I tried to speak, but Colter's Alpha tone—I couldn't—"

Her voice fractured. She stopped. Took a breath.

I stepped back from the door. "Come in."

She hesitated. Then crossed the threshold like she was stepping onto thin ice.

I closed the door behind her. Gestured to the chair across from the stone table. She sat. I didn't.

"What do you need to tell me?" I asked quietly.

She unfolded the paper. Her hands shook.

"The dosage logs," she said. "I noticed the discrepancy the day after Elder Andy died. I was filing your records—you'd asked me to cross-reference the heart-bond surgery notes—and I saw entries that didn't match what I'd witnessed."

She looked up at me. Her eyes were red.

"You prescribed yarrow extract at fifteen milliliters for Elder Andy's inflammation. I was there. I measured it myself. But the log Colter submitted says twenty-five milliliters. That's enough to cause the symptoms they're accusing you of."

She pushed the paper across the table.

"I wrote down every entry I personally witnessed. Dates. Dosages. Witnesses. It's not official, but it's accurate."

I picked up the paper. Read it slowly. Every entry matched my counter-record exactly. Every dosage. Every date. Every witness name.

Delia had been paying attention. Even when I hadn't known she was watching.

"Why didn't you speak at the assembly?" I asked.

Her face crumpled. "I tried. I stood up. I opened my mouth. And Colter's Alpha tone hit me like a wall. It wasn't a command—it was just his aura, but it was aimed at the whole room, and I couldn't—I couldn't make sound come out."

She wiped her eyes roughly.

"I'm a coward," she said.

"No," I said quietly. "You're here now."

She looked at me. I met her gaze and held it.

"The tribunal opens at noon," I said. "If you're willing to testify, I'll make sure the Council hears this. But if you're not, I understand. Colter's already proven he'll weaponize grief and authority to silence anyone who threatens his story."

Delia's hands stopped shaking. She straightened in the chair.

"I'll testify," she said.

I believed her.

*

I spent the rest of the morning organizing the evidence into a sequence that would hold under Council scrutiny. Bryson's file. My counter-record. Delia's witness account. The mind-link fragment. The financial records tracing Holly's pheromone purchases.

Every piece fit together like sutures in a wound.

By the time the sun reached its apex, I had a case that could survive cross-examination. I had evidence Colter didn't know existed. I had a witness willing to speak.

And I had seventy-two hours' worth of rage compressed into a single folder that weighed less than two pounds and could destroy an Alpha's entire conspiracy in the time it took to read three pages aloud.

I looked at the lancet on the table. At the Healer's oath engraved along its edge.

*To heal without harm. To serve without falsehood. To stand where others fall.*

I'd spent seven years believing that oath meant saving lives in a surgery chamber.

I was about to find out if it meant something more.
