Chapter 5

The great hall of neutral territory was built from stone that swallowed sound. High ceilings. No windows. Rows of wooden benches arranged in a semicircle around a raised platform where the Council sat. Five Elders in ceremonial robes. Maren Voss in the center chair, her face carved from patience and zero tolerance for performance.

I sat in the accused's seat. A single chair. No table. Nothing between me and five hundred pairs of eyes.

Colter stood at the petitioner's podium, his posture perfect, his voice steady. He'd dressed for this. Clean lines. Alpha aura dialed to exactly the right frequency—commanding without aggression, grieving without weakness. He was performing the role of his life.

"Elder Andy Bell served the Ironveil Pack for thirty-two years," Colter said. "He trusted our Healer with his care. He died three days after his final treatment. The dosage logs show a lethal concentration of yarrow extract—twenty-five milliliters, administered by Eva Spencer, in direct violation of standard protocols."

He gestured to the table beside him. The altered logs sat there in a neat stack, each page marked with my signature. My handwriting. My seal.

I'd written those entries. But not those numbers.

"We ask the Council to recognize this as Healer malpractice resulting in death," Colter continued. "And to grant the pack's right to blood justice under our sovereign law."

He stepped back. Nodded once to Maren Voss. Then returned to his seat beside Holly.

Holly rose next.

She wore mourning gray. Her hair was pulled back. No jewelry except the mark on her neck—visible, deliberate, positioned so every delegate in the room could see it when she turned her head.

She walked to the podium slowly. Her hands trembled just enough to read as grief rather than fear.

"My father trusted her," Holly said quietly. Her voice caught. She paused. Took a breath. "He told me she was the best Healer he'd ever known. He said she'd saved lives no one else could save. He believed in her."

She looked directly at me. Her eyes were dry but red-rimmed, like she'd been crying in private.

"I want to believe she didn't mean to kill him," Holly continued. "But the evidence is clear. The dosage was wrong. He died in pain. And she—" Her voice broke. She stopped. Pressed one hand to her mouth.

The gallery was silent.

Holly lowered her hand. Turned slightly so the mark on her neck caught the light.

"I stand here as Alpha Colter's mate," she said. "As the Luna of Ironveil Pack. As Andy Bell's daughter. And I ask the Council to see justice done."

She returned to her seat. Colter reached for her hand. She let him take it.

I watched the performance and felt nothing. No anger. No grief. Just the cold, precise awareness that they were good at this. Better than I'd expected.

Silas Crane stood next. The Ironveil Gamma. Holly's uncle. He didn't bother with grief. He went straight for authority.

"This tribunal is Lycan overreach," Silas said flatly. "The Silvercrest Accords grant the Council oversight of Healer-oath violations, but Elder Andy Bell's death is a pack matter. Our sovereignty—"

"Your sovereignty," Maren Voss interrupted, "signed a treaty that explicitly includes this scenario. Sit down, Gamma Crane."

Her voice was quiet. Conversational. Absolute.

Silas sat.

Maren Voss looked at me. "Eva Spencer. You are charged with Healer malpractice resulting in the death of Elder Andy Bell. The evidence presented suggests lethal dosage administration in violation of standard protocols. You will answer this charge now. Refusal or insufficient defense will result in immediate exile from all pack territories under Council jurisdiction."

She paused.

"The floor is yours."

I stood.

My legs were steady. My hands were not shaking. The bond scar on my neck pulsed once—cold, sharp—and then went quiet.

I walked to the podium. Set my folder down. Opened it.

"I did not administer twenty-five milliliters of yarrow extract to Elder Andy Bell," I said. My voice came out clear. Factual. "I administered fifteen milliliters. The dosage logs submitted by Alpha Murphy have been altered."

The gallery murmured. Maren Voss raised one hand. Silence dropped like a curtain.

I pulled out my counter-record. "I have reconstructed the original entries from memory. Every treatment. Every dosage. Every witness present during administration. The discrepancies are documented here."

I turned the page. "Additionally, I have corroborating testimony from Junior Healer Delia Park, who personally measured the yarrow extract during Elder Andy's final three treatments. Her account matches mine exactly."

I slid both documents across the podium toward the Council table.

Colter's legal representative—a sharp-faced Beta from a neighboring pack—rose immediately.

"Objection," he said. "These records are fabricated after the fact. The accused had three days to manufacture a defense. Without the original logs to verify against, this testimony is worthless."

He looked at Maren Voss. "Furthermore, Eva Spencer is a wolfless she-wolf of unclear origin with no documented bloodline. She has no standing to impeach an Alpha's sworn testimony before this Council."

The murmur in the gallery grew louder. I heard the word *wolfless* repeated. Heard someone whisper *rogue blood*.

The scar on my neck went ice-cold.

Something inside my chest shifted. Not my heart. Something deeper. Something that had been dormant so long I'd stopped believing it existed.

My wolf.

She pushed against the inside of my ribs. Slow. Grinding. Like stone cracking under pressure.

I gripped the podium. My vision blurred at the edges. The hall tilted.

"Eva Spencer," Maren Voss said sharply. "Do you require a recess?"

I shook my head. Found the notes in front of me. Forced my eyes to focus.

"I have additional evidence," I said. My voice sounded distant. Thin. "The wolfsbane vial recovered from my herb stores bears a scent signature that is not mine."

I reached into the folder. My hand was shaking now. I pulled out the vial—sealed in clear evidence wrap, labeled with Bryson's Beta's notation.

"Lycan forensic analysis confirms the scent belongs to Alpha Colter Murphy," I continued. "The vial was planted. The logs were altered. Elder Andy Bell was murdered, and I was framed to cover it."

I set the vial on the podium.

The pressure in my chest spiked. My wolf slammed against the suppression seal—once, twice—and I felt something crack.

Not the seal.

Something older.

I looked up. Met Colter's eyes across the hall.

He was staring at me. His face had gone pale. His Alpha aura flared—not a command, just raw presence flooding the room.

The pack members in the gallery dropped their heads. Instinct. Submission.

I felt it hit me like a wave.

And my wolf—dormant, suppressed, silent for twenty-eight years—*pushed back*.
