My Mate Registered His Mistress as Luna Before Me Novel Cover

My Mate Registered His Mistress as Luna Before Me

Three drops of Isla's blood on marble give a name to the rot she's smelled in her own house. In the fitting corridor, her sister lies clawed and pinned—held down by Isla's own Beta, Laurel Herrera, chanting a command only the Alpha's mate can give. Someone has taken Isla's place as Luna, and the whole territory is obeying. When Isla orders Laurel off her sister, her voice drops to the quiet that comes before a reckoning. A rejected mate, a stolen title, a pack that chose the wrong woman.

Chapter 3

Word spread the way it always does in a pack house — not through announcements, not through official channels, but through noses.

Within two hours of the corridor, I could feel them coming. Not see them, not hear them — feel them, the way you feel a change in pressure before a storm. Warriors who had trained inside ward lines I'd drawn with my own hands. Soldiers who had fought in border skirmishes under treaties I'd negotiated across three territories. They came in ones and twos, drifting through the pack house hallways toward the corridor where the scent still hung thick in the air, and I watched them breathe it in.

I watched their wolves answer before their faces did.

The first knee that went down voluntarily — not compelled, not commanded, chosen — belonged to a Delta named Holt who had never once looked at me as anything more than the Alpha's quiet wife. He stood in the corridor doorway with his head bowed and his hands loose at his sides, and he said nothing at all, and that said everything.

Corbin Reyes came last among the ranked officers, which was right. He would have made sure of what he was doing before he did it.

He walked up to me in the main hall with his shoulders set and his jaw tight and he said, low and clear, "The warriors under my command stand with the Luna Accord. They stand with you."

I looked at him for a moment. "You understand what that costs you if this goes wrong."

"I understand what it costs me if it goes right and I was on the other side." He held my gaze. "I've watched you build this pack for five years, Luna. I'm not going to pretend I didn't."

I nodded once. That was enough.

---

I found Laurel in the small side room off the fitting corridor, standing with her back to the window and her hands clasped in front of her like she was waiting to be called on in class. She had her Beta face on — composed, procedural, ready to cite chapter and verse.

I closed the door behind me and didn't sit down.

"Tell me," I said, "which pack law permits a Beta to physically restrain the Luna's sister on the verbal order of a she-wolf with no publicly recognized rank."

Laurel's chin came up. "Bethany Lynch is the Alpha's registered—"

"No public rank. Not in this house. Not on any document I was ever shown." I kept my voice even. "Try again."

"The Alpha's mate's command supersedes—"

"Laurel." I said her name quietly and watched her stop. "I'm not asking you to defend the decision. I'm asking you to hear yourself make it."

She pressed her lips together.

"You were my Beta for three years," I said. "You were in the room when I healed Holt's daughter after the eastern border breach. You were standing six feet away from me when I signed the Hollowmere accord. You have been close enough to my neck, on more than one occasion, to notice that my mark was always cold. Always scarless. Never once showed the glow that a real bond-bite carries."

The composure on her face developed a crack. Small. Right at the corner of her mouth.

"You noticed," I said. "You noticed and you filed it away and you decided it wasn't your problem to name."

"I didn't know—"

"You suspected. There's a difference, and you know it." I let that sit for exactly three seconds. "I'm not going to strip your rank in this room. That happens in front of witnesses, because that's what it deserves. But I want you to understand something before it does." I took one step toward her. "I elevated you. Not Beckett. Me. I argued for your promotion over four male candidates who had more hours logged and louder voices. I did that because I believed you were loyal to more than a title."

Laurel's throat moved.

"I was wrong about that," I said. "That's the only part of this I'll own."

I left her standing there with her hands still clasped and her Beta face finally, completely gone.

---

I went to the kennel at dusk.

Bane heard me coming before I reached the gate — I heard his nails on the concrete, that familiar scrambling rush, and then his big gray head was pushing through the gap before I'd even lifted the latch. He was lean in the way I hated, ribs too close to the surface, but his tail was going and his eyes were bright and he smelled like hay and cold air and the particular animal honesty that had kept me sane for three years.

I sat down on the kennel floor with him and he climbed half into my lap, which he had always done regardless of his size, and I put my arms around his neck.

I don't know how long I sat there. Long enough for the light to go fully out. Long enough for the pack house sounds to fade to something distant and manageable.

The tears, when they came, were quiet. Not for the mark. Not for the ceremony on the coast that I'd believed in so completely I'd written about it in my journal like something sacred. Not even for Beckett, who had never been worth them.

For the girl who had spent five years believing she was broken. Who had poured every ounce of herself into earning a place she'd been told she didn't naturally deserve. Who had read her own instincts as inadequacy for so long that she'd stopped listening to them entirely.

Bane pressed his nose against my jaw.

And somewhere deep and low, in the place that had opened its eyes this afternoon and never closed them again, my wolf spoke. Not loud. Not urgent. Just certain, the way only true things are.

*You were never broken. He hid me from you. I was always here.*

I pressed my face into Bane's fur and breathed.

Outside, across territories I hadn't yet measured, something else was moving toward Silverfang. I didn't know his name yet — not the way you know a name when you've been introduced. I knew it the way you know a scent on the wind before its source comes into view: cedar and winter jasmine, clean and high and entirely unfamiliar, and my wolf lifted her head toward it like a compass finding north.

Something was coming.

For the first time in five years, I wasn't afraid of what it might be.
