My Mate Publicly Rejected Me While I Carried His Heir Chapter 1

The rejection vow hit me at 8:47 on a Friday night, right as three hundred wolves watched Tyler Voss drop my wrist on the ceremonial platform.

He'd told me to wear white. He'd told me tonight would change everything. I believed him, because I always believed him — that was the whole architecture of the last five years, built on believing him.

Tyler turned to face the crowd instead of me. His jaw was set the way it got before pack announcements, not before promises.

"I, Tyler Voss, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Cora Ashworth, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first, like a window thrown open in winter. Then it went hollow — a door closing on an empty room, the click of it echoing somewhere behind my ribs where the bond used to hum. My knees folded before I told them to.

Ivory stepped out of the crowd in a white dress that matched mine, and Tyler sank his teeth into her throat in front of everyone who had ever called me nothing.

I hit the platform floor. Nobody moved. My wolf clawed at the inside of my chest, snarling, useless, unnamed even to me — she had never once answered when I called her, and she didn't answer now. The ceremony went on around my body like water going around a stone.

I don't remember standing up. I remember mud.

My things were already outside the pack house when I got there — clothes, my thin blanket, the sketchbook with the water-stained cover, all of it dumped in the rain like trash set out for pickup. I was on my knees in the mud, gathering it piece by piece, when Tyler's voice came through the open window above me.

"Five years, man. Five years I kept that going." Ice clinked against glass. "Easiest dare I ever took. She was so desperate to be loved she would've believed anything."

Marcus laughed — the low, easy laugh of a Beta who'd never once had to look me in the eye and lie.

My hands went still over the ruined sketchbook. Something in my chest didn't break. It rearranged, cold and precise, into something with edges. I reached up and pressed my fingers to the raw skin at my neck where the mark had split open, and I peeled away the thin curl of scar tissue already flaking loose. I didn't cry. I put it in my pocket like a receipt.

Then I stood up and walked for the border.

Tyler was already there when I reached the tree line, Ivory at his shoulder in her white dress, a wall of pack wolves fanned out behind them so I couldn't see a way through in any direction. He held something up between two fingers, and it took me a second to recognize it in the rain — the little plastic stick from my pillowcase, the one with two pink lines I hadn't told a single soul about.

"She's carrying my heir," Tyler announced to the crowd, his voice pitched to carry, dropping into that low growl of authority that used to make my knees weak for entirely different reasons. "Section Twelve of the Pack Custody Accord. No she-wolf bearing an Alpha's pup leaves this territory without his consent."

Ivory tilted her head, soft and sorry, like she was watching a stray get put down for its own good.

The Alpha tone rolled over the clearing and my spine wanted to bend to it out of old habit — five years of training does that to a body. I planted my feet instead. My hand went to my stomach, not in fear, in warning: *mine.*

"You don't get to invoke pack law on someone you just publicly discarded," I said, and my voice came out steadier than I expected, steady enough that Tyler's eyes flickered.

He opened his mouth to answer.

Headlights tore through the tree line instead.

A convoy of black SUVs came through the Ironvale gate without slowing, metal shrieking against the checkpoint bar, and the aura that rolled ahead of them hit the clearing like a wave breaking a dam — heavier than Tyler's tone, heavier than anything I had ever felt from any Alpha in my life. Every wolf around me flinched. Tyler's hand went to the back of his own neck, and beneath his snarl I saw something I had never once seen on him: his wolf cowering.

A door opened on the lead vehicle.

A man stepped out into the rain, tall, dark-coated, moving like the ground owed him footing. His eyes swept the clearing once — and locked on me.

Something in his face, held together for what looked like a very long time, broke open.
