My Mate Marked His Mistress at Our Ceremony Chapter 1

The mate bond tore at precisely 8:04 on a Friday evening.

I stood beside the raised cedar platform in the great hall, my two fingers pressed hard against the hollow of my throat. I had spent three weeks sewing the ivory linen dress I wore, stitching hope into every seam. Beneath the fabric, my stomach was still flat, carrying a six-week secret that was supposed to change our lives.

Then Alpha Jordan Nichols looked straight past me.

His eyes locked onto Elodie Cruz, a twenty-two-year-old she-wolf from the river pack he had met barely two weeks ago. Her cloying lilac perfume clung thick to Jordan’s collar, suffocating the dark pine scent that had defined my life for ten years.

Jordan raised his chin. When he spoke, he poured the full, crushing weight of his Alpha tone into the room.

"I, Jordan Nichols, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Mila Lawson, as my mate."

The words struck like an iron blade driven between my ribs. The bond went ice-cold, then ignited into phantom fire. It felt like living flesh being peeled from my breastbone, an agony so violent my knees gave out. I hit the hardwood floor, a strangled gasp catching in my throat as three hundred pack members held their breath.

No one stepped forward. Not a single elder. Not one of the warriors whose wounds I had stitched by candlelight while Jordan fought on the borders.

Before the echo of his vow died, Jordan stepped across the platform. He tangled his fingers in Elodie’s dark hair, tilted her neck, and sank his teeth viciously into her scent gland.

The sound of his fangs piercing skin cracked through the hall. Elodie let out a soft, theatrical cry, her fingers gripping his bicep as the golden light of a fresh claim flared around their shoulders.

He didn’t just reject me. He marked another woman on my stage.

The mate bond snapped with the sound of a closing iron door. But deep inside my chest—in the hollow where they had whispered *wolfless* since I was sixteen—something ancient and dormant gave a low, furious rumble. It was not a whimper. It was a snarl.

The Alpha pressure hammered down, ordering me to submit and crawl.

I didn't.

I dug my nails into my palms, forced my legs under me, and rose. Bone by bone, my spine locked straight. I brushed the dust from my linen skirt, lifted my chin, and met Jordan’s dark, arrogant eyes as he pulled his bloodied mouth from Elodie’s neck.

The great hall was dead silent.

"The child in my womb," I said, my voice low and cutting through the quiet like glass, "will never know your name."

Jordan’s smirk froze. Shock ripped across his features, his pupils blowing wide. Elodie stiffened against his chest.

I didn't give him the satisfaction of an answer. I turned on my heel and walked down the center aisle. The crowd parted before me, eyes wide with horror and guilt. I pushed through the heavy oak doors, stepping out into the cold autumn rain.

A black heavy-duty truck idled at the curb, headlights cutting through the mist.

I hadn't walked into that hall blind. Twenty minutes before the ceremony, after smelling Elodie’s musk on Jordan’s ceremonial jacket, I had pulled out my phone and sent a three-word text: *Come get me.*

The passenger door swung open.

Lycan Prince Cooper Adams sat behind the wheel. Jordan’s childhood best friend, the highest-ranking royal in the northern quadrant, and the only man who had never looked at me with pity. His silver eyes met mine in the dark cabin. He didn't ask if I was okay. He didn't offer empty comfort.

"Get in, Mila," Cooper said quietly.

I climbed in, shutting the rain and ten years of wasted devotion behind me. Cooper shifted into drive, his jaw clenched tight enough to splinter bone, and sped past Ironveil’s gates.

By dawn, we were sixty miles north, inside a safe-house cabin on neutral territory.

The cot in the back room smelled of dry cedar. Outside, the morning fog clung to the pines. In the pit of my stomach, the jagged remnants of the severed mate bond still flickered like a live wire, sending phantom pulses of Jordan’s heartbeat against my ribs.

I sat on the edge of the cot, reached into my spiritual center, and seized the fraying cord.

I didn't wait for time to dull it. I wrenched the last tether out of my soul.

Pain tore through me, white-hot and blinding. I bit clean through my bottom lip to choke back the scream, tasting iron as blood ran down my chin. Then came the snap. The cord dissolved into ash. The silence that rushed in to fill the void was vast, cold, and absolute.

A soft knock sounded at the cabin door.

Wren Sato slipped inside, her low-ranking omega scent nervous but determined. Under her arm was my battered leather duffel bag.

"I packed everything from your healing quarters before sunrise," Wren whispered, setting the bag down with trembling hands. "Every herb ledger, your mother’s satchel, your identification papers. Derek was already changing the locks."

"Thank you, Wren," I said, wiping the blood from my lip.

An hour later, Cooper parked outside the regional Lycan Council office. Grey stone pillars towered over the neutral border plaza. He turned the engine off and looked at me, keeping his lethal Lycan aura pulled tightly inside so it wouldn't press against my raw nerves.

"I can walk in with you," Cooper said softly. "One word from my father’s seal, and they'll grant whatever you need."

"No," I replied. "If you do it, Jordan will claim you stole me. I do this under my own name."

I walked into the registry alone. Fifteen minutes later, I walked back out into the pale morning light, clutching the heavy parchment bearing the embossed gold stamp of the High Council.

I was formally, legally registered as an unaffiliated she-wolf. Sovereign exile. Ironveil had no legal claim on my body, my wolf, or my unborn pup.

As I reached the truck, Cooper's dashboard radio suddenly crackled to life, interrupting the morning quiet with a high-pitched emergency dispatch from Ironveil’s northern border frequency.

*"All units, all units!"* Derek Holt's panicked voice barked through the speaker over blaring perimeter sirens. *"The northern ward just collapsed! We have rogue breaches at Marker Four! Alpha Jordan—the boundary line isn't holding!"*
